ARTIST STATEMENT

Deaf Safari is an audio collage of subjects that interest me and speak of the world I live in.
It is an album composed of sampled recordings from the media landscape that has been the soundtrack to my life over the last ten years.

The most important development in my current music and as can be heard on Deaf Safari has been my understanding of the beauty and power of the spoken word. I have experienced severe indifference to contemporary pop and electronic music as a whole over the last many years, as I have felt that social comment of any relevance has been ignored by music in general.
Deaf Safari attempts to bring sociopolitical comment into my music without taking any specific stand.
Sampled outside of musical influence directly from the news; from preacher sermons or from contemporary African documentaries.
I have finally created a story with sound that I feel accurately conveys my personal experience with the African world I live in.

My musical influences on this album lie mostly with local Kwaito house. Deaf Safari is an experiment within certain boundaries of the 4/4 genre, to create my own South African "house" album.
I am proud and inspired about the South African Kwaito house scene.
However, as with my first three albums, "Thin Shoes In June“ (2001) - "4/4 Down The Stairs“ (2002) and "Dark Days Exit“ (2005), I am still interested in making strange and evocative music.

American Roots music from the earlier periods of the 20th century has deeply resonated with me during the making of this album.
The incredible field recordings by Alan Lomax of Negro prison and chain gang work songs, and the
beautiful early recordings of artists such as Leadbelly have had a major influence on Deaf Safari.

I am truly excited to release this album and to start performing in the music world again. It has been ten years since I released "Dark Days Exit , and although I have been purposefully absent from the music world, I have none the less never stopped making music.
I feel that I have finally arrived at a mature and challenging stage in my pursuit of making emotional music of relevance .

A place far away from everything, yet right around the corner. A vision close enough to touch, yet so far away. Surrounded by keys, hatches, pots and small fragmented parts, Marbert Rocel lie down, discuss and dance through the winter of 2015. In this environment, in their studio in Leipzig, the band ties together the songs, which first saw the light of day in a small spot enclosed by woods in the summer of 2014.  Each decision goes through every head, each chord is listened to a hundred times, from font to back and in reverse, each compromise: a triumph for the common cause. Not pompoous string arrangements fuel this album with grandeur, but rather the notion of a consensual nod, which has evolved within Marbert Rocel over the years.  “In the Beginning” is the fourth album by Marbert Rocel, a living utopia and a tart kiss for every purist genre lover. Nothing is hewn raw on here, rather sculptured delicately. Percussion is tickling from synth pads like dew, and the songs welcome you like good friends. Like Tinkerbell, Spunks voice guides through this strange familiar world, moving past big feelings and small gestures, to finally lead to where it all started: “In The Beginning”.

We welcome back Greece’s finest, Harris Sgourdas aka Blusoul, for his second remix on Juicebox Music after his incredible work on Diyo’s ‘Underwater’ and his debut single on the label with ‘Depth of Emotion’. His unique ‘spacey-yet-groovy’ sound found it’s way to Tash’s “Movement”, Sonic Union’s “Lowbit” as well as Guy J’s “Lost & Found” with his monumental ‘Modular Memories’ in the past. https://soundcloud.com/schleppgeist has been invigorating Leipzig's scene and sound for quite a while now and with certainty will do even more so with this upcoming, vigorous EP on Distillery Records. He shaped up the opening and lead track "Dust" with so much potential, that he just had to carve out two versions, serving slightly different fields of application. The "Outdoor Mix" incorporates all the essentials of an utmost classy peaktime affair that will apply to the affective dynamics of crowds in larger numbers. Single lasting notes ensnaring micro-percussive patterns, haunted vocals creating somewhat of an emotive song-quality within the track-like arrangement, a break evidently bursting with tension and energy, in short: the maximum in effect, without compromising in style and attitude. The "Indoor Mix" on the other hand highlights rather tribal-esque rhythms and a more subtle and deep quality to the groove, tweaking it for ultimate club-duties.

Following up is "Shiver", a tune that delves into deeper realms, introducing a filtered-in piano-motif that progresses into pure Acid bliss. Toolhouse splendour that surely will send shivers of joy down many spines.  

"Last" opens up yet another sound aesthetic, bringing heavy breaks and a bassline into play that at some point in Techno history would have been considered "Knartz". Comparative minds might even sense some tribute to "Flatbeat" within this mix. At least up until the point, elevating pads add a more romantic notion to the tune.

https://soundcloud.com/chris-manura then finally lays his hands and mind on that very "Last", translating it into a 4/4 scheme, referring to the original's bassline here and there, but in general teasing out a completely different temper that's built on sparkling synths, a straight groove, deep mentality and epic arrangement.

Featuring three brand new instrumental tracks, the 'Golden Cage' EP sees Bernhardt venture into more introspective territory, eschewing the more upfront pop direction of recent collaboration with Panama, 'Electric Blue', for something softer and more intimate. Closing the EP we have 'Mercury Moments' which injects the susurration of distant voices into the mix of sparkling melodies, echoing chimes and finger clicking rhythms to stunning, emotive, effect.
 
Whilst 'Solar Nights' showcased Bernhardt's skill at crafting thoughtful left field pop music and coaxing the best out of lyricists and singers alike, the 'Golden Cage' EP reveals he's still a dab hand when it comes to crafting dreamlike nu-disco, as warming as a mug of glühwein in midwinter.
