Far Away Places [Mix/Jan 2014]

London graffiti artist Richard Sen began Djing in 1989 with a residency at the legendary Crazy Club at The Astoria. Ecstacy, Acid House and frequent trips to New York, visiting his heroes at Nu Groove and Strictly Rhythm and searching for Chicago obscurities gave Richard the house music bug. 

As well as solo projects, Richard now records with partner Neil Beatnik under the name Padded Cell who released their debut album 'Night Must Fall' in May 2008 on the legendary cult label DC Recordings. Sen's remix and production work alongside Padded Cell and Bronx Dogs have included respected artists and labels such as: Bryan Ferry, LCD Soundsystem, Saint Etienne, Jungle Brothers, Sugarhill Gang, The Glimmers, Cosmo Vitelli, Black Devil Disco Club, Get Physical, Tirk and Wall of Sound. Padded Cell's 'Signal Failure' single was also chosen by Francois Kevorkian to be used in the biggest selling video game of all time. Grand Theft Auto 4.

Lovers Lane [Mix/Oct.2009]

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

Well, I'm Markey Funk - Jerusalem-based composer/producer/record collector/dj/music archivist and counterculture freak. I'm into everything that has a groove and a mind-bending element in it - old and new. As a DJ, I'm mostly known for my deep funk/raw groove sets, while the music I produce has more psyched-out edge. In addition to traditional funk, soul, jazz, and 60-70's psych and prog, I collect early electronics, library and film music, old school hip hop, various oddities that have interesting samples, traditional and popular music from around the world, including large sections focused on Brazil (because I just love Brazilian music) and Eastern Europe/USSR (because I was born and raised in Minsk, Belarus).


2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

I think what drove me to 45's in the first place was the fact, that a lot of bands didn't live long enough to release a full album, but did manage to record a few singles. The 7" has always been cheaper to produce, so a lot of edgier and bolder music can be found on these records, with unbelievable treasures often hiding on the b-side. Some of my favorite labels barely released any LP's, but have fantastic back catalogs of 7inch gems.


3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

For this mix I decided to focus on genres beyond the funk/soul/raw groove section of my collection, which I'm mainly familiar for. There's also plenty of music that inspires me as a producer - particularly on my new album "Instinct": from electronic pioneers, like Delia Derbyshire, Tom Dissevelt and Henk Badings, to film music by Serge Gainsbourg, Roger Roger, Maestro Ennio Morricone and Goblin, to old and new psychedelia (Pisces, Can, Tara King th., Hezus and more), as well as my recent obsession with hauntology (Roj and Steve Moore), and other odd gems. My aim was to put together a cinematic, dream-like journey, that would be great to listen to late at night.


4) Where can people catch you / listen to your music? 

I'm often spinning in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. In May 2016 I'm going on a small European DJ-tour.

We couldn’t quite believe it when we heard that Sasha mixed the latest instalment of the Late Night Tales series. Someone so iconic It's been a while since we’ve been treated to something from the legend and Scene Delete shows a whole new side to the house and techno legend.

With sounds inspired by the likes of Steve Reich, Nils Frahm and Max Richter, we are treated to the more contemplative side of Sasha as he ditches the big beats for more sombre sounds. The CD showcases a side to Sasha that we’ve never seen before and we are delighted to delve deeper into it with his Slumber Session mix for i-D.

1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection.

I’m a DJ, producer and label boss - my label, Tummy Touch, turns 20 this year. I started collecting records when I was 13 and DJ’ing at 18 so my collection has had a long time to evolve. I moved to New York from London about 15 years ago and had to ditch about half of my vinyl, something I still loose sleep over !

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

The first record I ever bought with my own money was a 7”, and I still get that feeling of excitement when I score a new 45.

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

This mix was a double challenge - not only did I have to restrict my set to 7”s, but most of my 7” collection was in storage as I’m in the middle of moving ! I ended up having to use singles I never would have thought about, and many that I’d forgotten I owned. It also brought up some great memories as many of the newer tracks on this mix were given to me by the artist or label themselves.

4) Where can people catch you / listen to your music? 

My weekly radio show on East Village Radio called “Ravers Graveyard” or at The Rose Bar in NYC on Mon or Tue nights.
