Modular Project - 1981 - Sisters & Brothers Vol. 06

Closing in on two years since the first release in the series, it’s now time for Volume 6 of Sisters & Brothers, the release series curated by Copenhagen-based DJs and producers Kasper Bjørke and Sexy Lazer. 

This time out, Sisters & Brothers stars Modular Project, the Italian duo consisting of Alberto Iovine and Alessandro Fumagalli. Residents at Milan’s club VOLT, their broad music taste and style creates a world that stretches from Techno to Krautrock to New Wave to 80s synth. Now they’re bringing that world to Sisters & Brothers, in the form of 1981 – Sisters & Brothers Vol. 6. 

The new release consists of three tracks from Modular Project, along with one track reworked by Kasper Bjørke. 

The opener and title track ‘1981’ keeps things short and spacy, a graceful, abstract piece of music clocking in at just under a minute and a half. 

Then follows ‘Past Present Future’, where the groove and motorik momentum kicks in for a heavy, driving piece of music hovers on the line between Krautrock and Techno. 

The final original is ‘Freshback’, which adds a little funk to its bassline to go along with the woozy synths for a light-footed, adventurous house track. 

Wrapping it up is the Kasper Bjørke Bonus Beat Version of ‘1981’, which takes the original’s spacey atmosphere and expands it into a vaster, more sprawling version, backed up with new drums to give it more structure and kick. 

All in all, 1981 – Sisters & Brothers Vol.6 functions both as an introduction to Modular Project for the unfamiliar, as well as an exciting new adventure for the band’s current fans.

Bufi is back with ‘México 70’ a new album, a couple of years after his sophomore LP on Discotexas ‘Revelación’.

With a broader, more eclectic palette of sounds and rhythms, this time the music gets infected with cowbells and bongoes, prehispanic samples, funky guitars, "guapachoso" basses and ethereal vocals. From the pseudo cumbia of "Hillalum (Amazónica)" to the suicidesque jam of "Impresionistas", this addictive album will induce you to have a lot of fun from the beginning till the end.

The artwork is a design by portuguese artist Braulio Amado, responsible for the covers of Bufi's previous two singles extracted from this same LP, "Brujerías" and "Hillalum (Amazónica)", released late 2018.

If something can be aseptic cold like the New Romantics and deep, soulful and trippy at the same moment, then this release by Berlin’s Al Chem, which is a pretty damn thorough modelling of no wave.
  and vocals in a minimal lo-fi electronic soul-bed is hard to find. Al Chem’s voice and lyrics are beautiful, over an ethereal dive. Al Chem extracting a rich sense of emotion from a hypnotic grooving synth-pad.
 With some tipp-topp hitters on remix duty: Shahrokh Dini made an absolutely stunning quirky peak time club mix, while Compost‘s boss Michael Reinboth is riding tough on a stone-cold  80ties groove.

In these strange and uncertain times we find ourselves even more eager to release new music by Luv Shack Records' core artists. During some very sunny and inspiring recording sessions last Summer Luv Shack´s own Lee Stevens and musical brain Martin Arnold teamed up to form a new band, channeling the legendary spirit of the 90s Downbeat sound of Vienna. After having written a bunch of tracks it seemed a logical step to involve more friends and musicians into their project. Lee´s long term classmate and bass player Pheech could not be asked twice and joined the jams as well as singer Myla and other fellows, so that the full ensemble now consists of bass, flute, guitar, sax and of course Lee´s amazing collection of analog gear and samples.

The "Come With Me EP" comes with four original songs exploring various tropes of jazz infused electronica, plus two remixes by austrian artists Oberst & Buchner and Lukas Poellauer.

The title track "Come With Me" features hazy vocals by singer Myla protruding from a thick sonic carpet of live sax, vibes, double bass and eerie guitar chords. The jazz-tingled instrumental is tied together by a chugging beat that takes us back to the halcyon days of trip-hop.

"What I Mean" takes the "Rising Seed" recipe of live sax and double bass and pairs it with a funky uplifting beat, mellow rhodes and samples from the dustiest of crates. 

On "Train To Kismarton", Lee Stevens shows off his love for spaghetti western films and movie quotes, merging balearic house with western guitars and chants that hark to back Morricone soundtracks - let's call it Desert-House!

The laid back instrumental of "Without You" is perhaps the most low-key track on the EP, but with its lush blend of hammond chords, pan flute and classic drum-breaks, it perfectly fits the signature sound of Lee Stevens` "Rising Seed" moniker.

The Austrian stars of the new downbeat movement and "Heimlich" head honchos Oberst & Buchner apply their unique sonic wizardry to the remix of "Come With Me", embedding the vocal in a tight oriental house structure with a dramatic break and a second half that boasts with heavy-synth energy. 

Rising talent Lukas Poellauer delivers a house remix of "Without You" that captures the essential jazzy mood of the original, but adds a plethora of ghostly strings, chord stabs a touch of TB-303.

Victor Valpuesta is a DJ, musician and passionate music professional based in Mexico City since 2016.

He has been involved in the Mexican music scene since 2017 as musical director for Otto Bar, music advisor for Dinsmoor Club, Supra Rooftop, and talent curator for Festival Vaivén and Festival De Frente.

His music project Valpy is powered by psychedelic beats, rippling synths, wonderful vibes from the retro future, and funky atmospheres that won't let you stop dancing.
