The variety and full spectrum of Compost’s repertoire has never or rarely been presented in form of a musical genre compilation. For this selection, our label mate Eddy Ramich (Eddy Meets Yannah) dug in the Compost archive for the finest Broken Beat and NuJazz gems from almost forgotten times. Eduardo Rafael Da Cruz Ferreira - editor of the magazine FAZEmag - early devoted himself to electronic music. His graceful and melancholic interpretation of deep house he quickly made a name for himself in numerous clubs from Cologne, over Hamburg to Berlin and at festivals like PollerWiesen, RaveOnSnow, Utopia Island and Nature One. With "Right To Love" he started running his own night in Cologne's most famous Club called Gewölbe, where he presents acts like Maceo Plex, Mario Basanov, Ten Walls, Deniz Kurtel, Miguel Campbell, H.O.S.H. or PillowTalk in a very exclusive atmosphere.

The first album of Web Web is very uncut, raw, live and direct. „Oracle“ is the first output of a German Supergroup. Check the musician credits below and you’ll get the score. The initial idea was to record a spiritual- jazz type of album, with all its imperfection as far as intonation, sound, influences of tunes... just like from their big jazz-heroes in the 70ies (e.g. Strata East, Black Jazz).
Web Web’s idea was to record a jazz jam session while to found and proclaim being a fictive band, a formation, which did not exist, while telling people, it would be a secret jam session recording of the Seventies. The prompt problem they were facing: Oh, we never would be able to play concerts, doing interviews, or placing photos on sleeves or post likeness images online. So they decided to reveal their real identities:

Roberto Di Gioia (Piano, Synth, Percussion), Tony Lakatos (Tenor- and Sopranosaxophone), Christian von Kaphengst (Upright Bass) and Peter Gall (Drums).

Roberto Di Gioia (Mastermind of Web Web): „The four of us set up very close in a big room, so we could hear and feel each other the best way. The music became more intensive, improvisations became more dynamic and it was impulsive.“

The album „Oracle“ was recorded on one day, only first takes were used!

We want to keep the burning spirit and the loose vibe we had during the recording session. And we play concerts the wild and free way we recorded this album. Web Web will be on tour 2018, but playing a few concerts in 2017. Furthermore, one main decision to blab their real identities was: The second Web Web album is recorded in June (with guests like the famous and unique Gembri-player and multiinstrumentalist and singer Majid Bekkas from Morocco).
Both albums were engineered, recorded and mixed by Jan Krause (Beanfield, Poets Of Rhythm).

Roberto Di Gioia: „Tony was tuning his Soprano too high, and his (overdubbed) tenor way too flat!

My synthesizers were somewhere in between...HA! We exactly had the sound we had in our minds, we had it exactly there were we wanted it: a bit of Sun Ra here, a bit of Horace Tapscott there.
On some tunes Tony’s soprano just sounds like a trumpet, since due to his weird tuning the soprano develops different frequencies in relation to other instruments.“

As a nice but ideal step, Web Web could thrill the well-known singer and Gembri-player Majid Bekkas from Rabat, Morocco, who joined the group into the studio. Tony Lakatos was working with Majid and Joachim Kühn in the last years, also Roberto Di Gioia played with Majid and Klaus Doldinger. This brilliant musician with his north-african roots enriches the rough and bluntly concept of Web Web jazz. In „Maroc Blues“, a solo performance by Majid Bekkas, you can hear the warm vibrant Gembri, an instrument like an upright.bass or lute with three strings. Majid’s marvelous voice, which, reflecting the centuries-old tradition of the Berber tribes, perfectly underpins the great improvisation and spirituality of Web Web.
Majid Bekkas is one of the most famous musician and representative of Gnawa-Music, which has its domicile in the south of Sahara. Majid Bekkas studied at the Conservatory For Music & Dance in Rabat, while playing since 1975 classical acoustic guitar and oud. For example, he played with Archie Shepp, Louis Sclavis, Peter Brötzmann, Hamid Drake and lot of others in the world of jazz and world music.
„Dance Of The Demons„ (as well as the debut „Oracle“) was recorded live in Munich, engineered by Jan Krause (Beanfield, Poets Of Rhythm), produced by Roberto Di Gioia and Michael Reinboth.
The next, third Web Web album recording session are already scheduled for November 2018 with an outstanding famous guest musician, too.

A sophisticated little bastard of a DJ-mix

It’s about time for the fifth instalment of the Compost Black Label Series – unveiling some of the finest cuts in the label’s recent history in a versatile DJ mix crafted by Compost family member Thomas Herb, who built a strong reputation as a DJ when it’s about merging soul-injected house, techno and disco into a musical journey. Featuring winner tunes and remixes by Phreek Plus One, Osunlade, Woolfy, DJ T. or Rainer Trueby, Herb is also highlighting the work of new breed like Emil Seidel, Philipp Stoya and Emilie Nana, who all contributed high-quality tunes on the Black Label within the last year. Playing on top of the game since about one and a half decades, the Bob Beaman resident DJ, holding a steadily growing national and international schedule, is kicking things off with some proper nu-school vibes until he smoothly blends to balearic and disco influenced territories – then somehow he’s already in the middle of Holland Tunnel, the New Jersey styled tune by Muallem, opening our minds eye for the glittering skyline of Manhattan and our ears for this music called house - unfolding its purest grooves and energy within the mix. Keeping up the level, Thomas Herb subsequently heading the ship towards a middle west inspired direction, throwing in some decent rave signals without loosing his fluent, elegant style he carefully morphs into a old school Chicago vibe! The set is closing with Lukas Bohlender’s beautiful stringloaden emo-houser Club Chateâu. Apart from storytelling, quality and programming the tunes itself, Thomas Herb unmistakably put some extra focus on adding this kind of warm, handcrafted, dynamic live-vibe – and he succeeds big time with this sophisticated little bastard of a DJ-mix.

With Compost Records head honcho Michael Reinboth, Thomas Herb co-hosted the Compost Black Label Sessions clubnights held at Harry Klein and later at Bob Beaman for the last four years – sharing the decks with the likes of Jerome Sydenham, Deetron, Jay Shepheard, Osunlade, Agnés, John Talabot, Willie Graff, Kalabrese, Karizma, Heidi, Permanent Vacation, Move D & Thomas Meinecke, DJ T., Nuno Dos Santos and many more.
