The hot air balloon drifted up into the sky, it could be seen overlooking the city, those perched in the tiny wicker basket below watched down upon a busy world of hustle and bustle.

The sky was clear but in the distance there was the odd cloud splattered against a deep radiant blue backdrop. The sun beamed down upon them as they continued to rise in the glow of the morning.

Perhaps this is what it felt like, flying that is. He’d always imagined it might be weightless and freeing, yet as he sat perched in the small booth he realised it was far more than that. It was a sense of being, a state of forever in which you might never land and touch back down to earth. That would be dreamy he thought..

Yuu Udagawa is set to release a new EP, a fruity assortment of fun electronic mischief which is reminiscent of early DJ Koze and old downtempo beat tapes. This one gets a big green tick and a thumbs up from us.

Albert’s Favourites label founder Scrimshire released his bold new album 'Paroxysm' on May 26th. In the last few weeks of October 2022, Scrimshire wrote this new collection of songs with the descriptive working title "Scream". A direct response to the absurdity of the breakdown in the UK government, the horror of the treatment of refugees arriving on our shores and the callous disregard for the trauma being caused to low income people or anyone considered "other". While self-preserving Conservative MPs fought for their jobs, record profits were announced by energy companies as crippling amounts of money were gouged from people's pockets. The anger, sadness, mourning, and frustration he felt was poured into these recordings.

Singer Faye Houston features on new single ‘Eyes Shut’ a deeply mournful but beautiful piece of atmospheric jazz. It asks questions of our seemingly collective denial of the realities around corruption, racism and environmental catastrophy.

Scrimshire’s last album, 2021’s 'Nothing Feels Like Everything', received an Album of the Year nomination at the Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards and last March he was named by the Guardian as one of three producers behind the new wave of UK soul, alongside Inflo (Michael Kiwanuka, Sault, Lil Simz) and Swindle (Joel Culpepper, Greentea Peng, Kojey Radical). Albert’s Favourites was formed by Adam, Dave Koor, and Jonny Drop, who designed the logo and artwork, and has released records by The Expansions, Hector Plimmer, Huw Marc Bennett, Pie Eye Collective, Qwalia, Rōnin Arkestra. 

'Paroxysm' is out now on vinyl LP and digital formats.

“Freddie’s Groove” is Crackazat in full-on jazz mode. The nod to Freddie Hubbard is clear, and Crackazat cleverly takes ideas from both the jazz legend and his legendary French sampler, Pepe Bradock for this track. The horns are deep and moody, the groove is jazz-house at its best and Crackazat’s soft vocals have the perfect amount of fragility to fit the groove. The changeover into a stabby synth section halfway through the track is a subtle reminder from the skilled producer that – even with all these musical elements – he can direct you to the front of the dancefloor with the twist of a note.

Lyon beatsmith Saint Paul made an impressive full debut in 2017 with his Introspection EP on Moonrise Hill Material (which he co-runs with his boys Folamour, Ethyène and Kaffe Crème). After tasty contributions to V/As on the likes of Apparel Wax and FHUO, the Frenchman is back with another solo record on DC’s Better Listen Records.

The Naturist Behavior EP is a tastefully balanced, warm-weather oriented four tracker. The title track and the A2, “A Hawaiian Trip”, explore playful and jazzy territories. Meanwhile, the flip hosts moodier ventures via the bittersweet boogie of “Tell Me” and the ice cold late night jam, “Feels Good”.
