Mix of the Week #393: Gently Baked (Vol. 2)

A one off mix compiled by Kiernan Abbott, comprising of the lesser played folk / pop tracks performed in sessions and released on independent or private labels throughout the 1970-1990s in Wales. 

Welsh folk music has always been a major collectors item, with many looking to Sain or Welsh greats like Tecwyn Ifan, Sidan or Endaf Emlyn. This mix focuses on the music made in bedrooms, garages and on radio sessions should they be lucky enough to salvage the recordings. It's in our nature as Welsh people to be the 'outsider' given our minority, and geographical or historic relationship with England. 

This mix is to celebrate the musicians and artists that crafted their own sound, using the passion and can do attitude that was required to bring their music to life.

Long overdue in the FH control room is Brighton based Valencian, Pépe - someone who has been on our Radar as 'one to watch' since our channels inception. And one to watch he has certainly been with a string of stellar releases in the past year on crowd favourite imprints @lobster-theremin, @renascence9293 and @inrecords-1 - all of which packing enough clout to topple a 50ft, roided up Tyson Fury.

Something to note about Pépe is that as well as his production quality, his sound has remained consistent. Highly percussive, raw and hard-hitting yet intricate, subtle and at times beautiful. His mix for us mirrors his production style -  this time around bringing in the darker and steelier textures of dance music's tapestry. High mechanical energy from front to back - this ain't' one to drift off in your hammock too.

Went through the archives and decided to upload this set I played at Pistil in Seoul, South Korea as part of my Asian tour I did in July 2019. Playing the show with my now good friends Jesse You(Treehouse / Wavecord Seoul, Jaezae(Tucan Discos)and Daniel Schine Lee was an eye-opening experience into how the Korean people dance, move and connect on the dancefloor. Pistil was one of the highlights in between hitting up spots like Seoul Community Radio, Salon 10, Fauve Radio and Hong Kong Community Radio in Hong Kong. Much love to the friends I made over there, I will be back again soon.

Returning from his Asian tour last year, GREETINGS has found influence in the cities of the east. Where city pop blends with house jams in the late night and Italo disco peaks a party. The Melbourne based producer embraces the past and takes on the future when it comes to creating his own music. As for DJing, he likes to pick from his large selection of retro and forgotten treasures. 

Running his own Imprint Boots & Legs (strictly vinyl releases), he put together a selection of Italo flavours for Bordello A Parigi.
