The annals of music history are filled with plenty of unusual pairings, but there's no denying that Spiritual Friendship, the joint project of Gareth Jones and Nick Hook, is the work of a particularly odd couple. The roots of their relationship trace all the way back to 2005, when Jones—a celebrated British producer and engineer who's spent more than 35 years working with acts like Depeche Mode, Einstürzende Neubauten, Wire, Mogwai, Erasure, Grizzly Bear, Liars, Clinic, and others too numerous to list—was hired to mix an album by Men Women & Children, a group that Hook was playing keyboards in at the time. Connecting over a shared love of synths and the simple fact that they were the only two non-musicians in the room, Jones and Hook struck up a friendship, one that ultimately lasted well beyond the latter's band, which dissolved just a few years later.

Hook, a St. Louis native brought up on a musical diet that was equal parts hip-hop, punk rock and electronic music, spent the next several years carving out his own lane in New York, becoming a loveable jack-of-all trades who was just as comfortable dropping bombs in the DJ booth as he was recording Young Thug in the studio or performing live on stage with El-P. As his various endeavors frequently took him around the globe, he'd always make time to link up with Jones in London, usually over dosas near Hampstead Heath.

Nearly a decade after their first meeting, the two finally decided to get in the studio together, scheduling three days in Jones' East London lair, theartlab, in late 2014. Guided by a simple premise—no judgement—and a whole lot of psychedelic adventuring, the pair went to work, letting their unconscious lead the way as they pieced together a complex suite of field recordings and modular synth transmissions. Invigorated by the process and committed to only working on the music when both men could be in the room, additional recording sessions were scheduled, both in London and in Hook's Brooklyn studio, thespacepit.

Completed in 20 days over the course of more than a year, the duo's debut album is a constantly evolving listen best understood as a walk through an urban space. At its core are Jones and Hook and their wholly unique bond, a spiritual friendship—hence the name—based on honesty, joy, love, art, healthy food, long walks, mutual empowerment, mutual respect, and the wisdom that comes from a combined 100 years of life experience. 



NOTON – founded by Carsten Nicolai as a small imprint in 1994 – began its activities in 1996 with the release of noto’s “spin”. a collaboration with RasterMusic began the same year, and by 1999 the two labels had merged into Raster-Noton. In 2017, NOTON will start working independently again by releasing Alva Noto’s entire back catalogue, and the label is currently planning releases for the future too. Ongoing projects and collaborations include: Noto, Alva Noto, Opto (Thomas Knak + Alva Noto), cyclo.  (Ryoji Ikeda + Alva Noto), ANBB: Alva Noto + Blixa Bargeld, Alva Noto + Ryuichi Sakamoto, Anne-James Chaton + Alva Noto + Andy Moore, ø + Noto.

My name is Jamie Lidell and I'm gonna delve into the heady magic of creating music in a modern studio, probe the depths of production, get tech crazy with mixing tricks, studio skills and equipment. I'll be joined by fellow musicians, engineers and all-round audiophiles who kindly share their tips, stories and ingenious insight from the bizarre world of music production. I shall answer questions and seek knowledge from other music makers on a quest to discover how to make things sound RIGHT. I will also share some studio trickery on each episode as I explore some of my favourite innovations in music tech and my creations... outpourings from the weirdo brain! Welcome to a place for musicians, producers and listeners alike as we "cheers" our love of everything audio.

Now an established force in contemporary Techno, Mike Bierbach, better known under his stage name Rødhåd is someone who has seriously put in the work. Having cut his teeth DJing as a relatively unnoted (but well loved by those in the know) local in Berlin for 10 years, one could argue that by the time success knocked on his door, he was more than ready for playing the international stage. It was during these 10 years of obscurity when he refined his craft to become the singular DJ he is now. 

Launching his party-series-turned-label Dystopian in 2009 was what truly tipped the ball over for Rødhåd. In a time where the Berlin scene was heavily oversaturated by fluffy, miscellaneous dance music, he & his peers set out to form a platform for real techno. The reception to this was raucous. 

Although he has lauded productions and remixes to his name, DJing is his true forte. Before abandoning his day job as a draftsman in construction “The Red” (as some call him due to his gingered, bearded appearance) was known for playing very long sets in Berlin’s most notorious hideaways. 

With an album, several EPs & remixes for a multitude of different artists under his belt, Rødhåd the producer has received equal praise as Rødhåd the DJ. Dystopian has hosted most of his releases, but in 2018 he founded a new label WSNWG that serves as a home for collaborative productions, excavated in sessions at his East-Berlin studio with his peers such as Lucy, Alex.Do, & Antigone.
