Deep house heroes Greg Dowling and Shane Johnson have been playing records and producing music for over two decades. With releases on esteemed labels like Large, Innervisions, Local Talk, Freerange and Defected, their 90s residency at the legendary Sir Henry’s pretty much introduced a generation of Irish clubbers to house. Starting out on pirate radio, their long standing FGD radio show is going strong. ‘This Bit of Earth’ is a collection of tracks out on their home label Go Deep, their third album to date. Work began in the relative normality of 2019, finishing the tracks over the strange summer of 2020. The result mirrors the thoughts that such upheaval brings up - our world and our place in it - while also functioning as a kind of travelogue of journeys past and planned, real and imaginary. Mixing samples with modular synths, programmed drums with jazz loops, and quirky plugins with outboard gear, the album ranges far and wide while retaining a warm, natural sound.

The title track ‘This Bit Of Earth’ opens on an ambiguous note. A double bass motif weaves around a misheard vocal sample, layers of piano and vibraphone take up the call, as it gradually spins off axis to a distorted, disjointed finish. A highlight for me is the sonically stunning ‘Suburban Key’, with its dusty groove and fast paced drums, piano, and cinematic strings reminiscent of a Four Hero orchestral masterpiece. ‘Alice on Jupiter’ takes a deep breath and blends field recordings, gentle pads, modular bursts and a recurring melody. ‘Back Trace Dub’ strolls the imagined streets of Irish author Kevin Barry’s ‘City of Bohane’, noting the “taint of badness” in the air and revelling in the tense, dub-noir atmosphere. The spoken word intro of ‘I Could See’ expresses the dread of confinement and the relief and ecstasy of release, a theme the music reflects as it steadily builds to a joyful climax. Closing the album on an optimistic note, the languid, emotional ‘Culatra Ferry’ remembers better, beautiful days in the sun and looks hopefully forward to more.

‘Content Creator' is a brilliantly slick and crisp techno roller. It has icy percussion over heavy kicks, and the frazzled synths ride up and down the scales to bring raw, tense energy. When the cyborg vocals bring an alien sense of soul, the club is sure to go off.

Faced with a pandemic-inflicted year at home with no gigs, Belgium artist Ilario Liburni decided to challenge himself in the studio. The result is a brand new project, The Cyberian, with no rules whatsoever. The results have found him lost in the cosmos, layering up rich melodies and cyborg funk, driving techno drums and deep house atmospheres. From peak time to downtempo, organic to proudly synthetic, The Cyberian sound is the sound of an artist pouring a lifetime's worth of experiences, emotions and skills into something utterly new and thrillingly honest.

With the new alias comes a new label, CyRecs. Its early and essential output has already been played and supported by DJ T, Nick Warren, Maceo Plex and many more. It is the latest in a long line of labels from Liburni: since 2013, he has run vinyl outlets Invade Records and Cardinal Records, which have seen him collaborate with cult names such as Ricardo Villalobos, Mathew Jonson, Cab Drivers and DJ Wild, amongst others.

This ongoing and ever-evolving musical journey all started at school when Liburni started selling tapes in the playground. From there, his passion and hobby turned into a full-time obsession, and his first release in 2011 on Monique Musique immediately announced his arrival in fine style. Since then, he has gone on to release on the influential likes of Memoria Recordings, Superfreq, Bla Bla and Fantastic Friends, and for that reason, he is a regular at all of Europe's most well-regarded clubs and festivals.

2021 marks the start of another exciting chapter for The Cyberian, who continues to innovate right at the sharp end of the scene.
