“OpenLab offers the opportunity to be expressive in ways most stations do not. So here we go, hold on to your hats for a ride through some of the grittier parts of town.

To mark the end of winter I decided to dig deep into the darker recesses of my collection, right at the very back of the beats and pieces cabinet of my mind I found a collection of tracks that truly represent the underground sound of Sa Penya (the Roma quarter under the castle walls) Another Ibiza, an Ibiza not witnessed by the tourist hordes that descend on our isle every summer to fill their stomachs with the luke warm tech and high-street house dished up by most.

This week JR takes the show on the road and records part of it from the Tartu film festival in Estonia where he was DJing. He chats about the his experience on the trip, almost not getting in the country and plays some of the music he heard there. For American-born live performer and producer Conoley Ospovat, music is something deeply personal - a means of expressing and sharing the most heartfelt of emotions.  Hypnotic techno performances that are entirely self-produced and improvised take the listener on journeys through sound and emotion, texture and feeling. With his longest live set to date clocking in at close to 10 hours, these musical journeys weave together the variety of styles that comprise his vast and growing catalogue of original material.

Drawing from a diverse range of influences including techno, house, early electronica, synthpop, post-punk, jazz, and improvisational jam bands, Conoley creates uplifting dance music that is an interpretation of the world in sound. From hardware synthesizers and drum machines to ethnic acoustic instruments, field recordings and chopped-up audio to guitars and vocals; Conoley brings a finely-honed musical sense to his productions and performances based on more than 25 years in the studio and on stage.

He has performed live across America, Asia, and Europe.  He has supported the Wighnomy Brothers, John Tejada, Guillaume and the Coutu Dumonts, Extrawelt, and Los Hermanos. He has shared bills with Move D, Pier Bucci, Robag Wruhme, Gerald Mitchell, DJ Nobu, Modern Deep Left Quartet, and Marc Schneider.

Conoley has recently released on Otake Records, Cervidea Recordings, Kimochi Sound, Blankhaus, Teorema, and Continental Drift Records.

Ospovat co-founded Continental Drift Records with c_olvrin in 2009. He is currently based in Lincoln, Nebraska USA.
