2023 - What are you listening to?

Kicking off the Spring season is DJ Earl Grey with Mix #6 of Tasting Tones.

TASTING TONES #6 DJ Earl Grey

The mix represents a variety of italian cosmic classics with nower days slow tempo electronic bangers and shows the origin of my passion for electronic music. It covers 70s and 80s electronic music e.g. from Logic System, Peru or Koto often played by the italian DJ grand masters like Danielle Baldelli mixed with sounds mainly from the DEEWEE sphere. The tracks are full of synthy sounds and clashes on slow tempo around 100bpm. Starting with an incredible track from Bolis Pupul - Moon Theme, catching up exactly the vibe of those days. Enjoy the Ride.

Starting with a deep dive alongside whales who will sing for you, you’ll find yourself getting an instruction on how to become a more passionate lover shortly after. If you hear voices - pay attention. They might have something interesting to tell. If you don’t - just nod your head. Keeping it in the 80s and 90s I decided to mix some of my favorite hip hop, dub, downtempo and synth-pop records in this contribution. Enjoy!

An idiosyncratic outlier in the history of 20th Century guitarists, Gábor Szabó's intricate style is as unique as his origin story. Inspired by cowboy films as a teenager whilst living in his native Budapest, Hungary, Szabó was mostly self taught, and serenaded diners and drinkers in establishments around the city in the 1950s.

He escaped political turmoil in Hungary, moving with his family to California, where he attended Berklee College, and soon began playing with California jazz artists like Chico Hamilton, and eventually with legendary bassist Ron Carter. Shaped both by this jazz experience and the Hungarian folk music of his youth, Szabo's solo career was a sonic one-off, filled with free-wheeling, delicate psychedelia and unpredictable melodic inventiveness.

The beginning of my musical journey was an attempt to find direction, even in the process of growing up and to sort emotions. The opportunity to empower oneself, to break free, or to lose oneself is still the aim of my music consumption today. I believe that this is something deeply normal (?) However, my favourite kind of music is embracing, preferably with orchestral elements, which I would describe with a certain grandeur. That means, while listening, the attempt is made to detach oneself from all the adversities and lows of life - to look at oneself and the chaos of life from a distance.
