Teqmun - Phototropism EP [SO005]

After a long period of seclusion as the world had been dealing with a global pandemic, Teqmun emerges from the silence delicately with his first-ever EP, Phototropism.

Phototropism is the biological term for the directional response that allows plants to grow or bend towards, or in some cases away from a source of light. And just as plants, this debut EP by the Amsterdam-based DJ and producer Tijmen Blokzijl, grows and bends from soothing ambients towards more percussion-driven compositions that stimulate movement and could be taken straight to the dance floor. Filled with anticipation, colorful synth melodies make way for rhythmic drums and ominous textures, only for it to sweep back to its original state of peace and calmness. 

Already at a young age, Tijmen developed an interest in biology which later on blossomed into a vivid passion for anything plant-related. The balance between his passion for green life sciences and electronic sound design pushes Teqmun’s sound to be constantly shifting between crisp organic synths and grainy electronic tones that keep his music undeniably compelling. As his first ever EP, Teqmun intends to as it were, grow towards the light and into the public eye.

MSJY commences the dance, wrapping some deft breaks around a steamy reggaeton shell. Viiaan douses the loose dembow groove with a hypnagogic mood and chuggy bassline. Dåser maps out an itchy labyrinth of percussive electro that relentlessly mutates. Mossambi unfurls a futurist digi stepper brimming with excitable technoid energy. Octoptic indulges late 00’s dark
2-step but updated with remarkably modern sound design. Elpac and Mulholland combine to burn twisted breaks within an all-consuming rave menace. Baitface provides us with a loving
throwback, an unreleased gem from 2012 fit with dub momentum and snappy snares for the headbangerz. Henzo flicks the hood up and gets nasty for a dialed-up skankstep wonder. Soreab opens his third eye with a haunted drumtastic half time chug. soltura sees us out with an icey wub finale of stirring synth-etic emotions amidst a melodic wonderland of sound.

🌀💦🔄💦With Liquid Transfers, Esgeem pulls you into an enchanted, misty universe, with vibrant ambience and deep-toned rumbles. Delicate, tangible sounds hypnotize and engage the senses. Half synthetic, half organic textures are layered over on familiar rhythmic structures. Deep, pulsating bass flows between the unhurried and persistent beats of the kick drum. Modest breakdowns emphasize the negative space. This deliberate minimalism only adds to the intensity of the tracks and places the feeling at the forefront: otherworldly, exotic, and brimming with energy.

@esgeem - Leipzig-based producer and dj, part of the Breakfest collective. His productions offer a harmonious balance between sonic introspection and uninhibited movement, drawing from halftime, dub and UK bass to form futuristic club music.

Based in France, Flower B seeks to transform noise and frequencies into dark drums like strong words, syllables cooking in a microwave oven.
