Within the frame of an ongoing series of works exploring software
which exposes its own process (such as self [link]), stack overflow
renders audible program (over) flow and control. As the name suggests
the (execution or call) stack can be visualised as a pile of data;
when a subroutine is called information such as where the routine
should return to when its completed, is piled on the stack. A stack
overflow occurs when the stack grows beyond its imposed bounds,
overwriting other variables in memory and causing the machine to
crash/behave in unpredictable manners. /Stack overflow/ here is
implemented on the ATmega8 microcontroller. Future stack overflows
explore the possibilities of extending the stack overflow imaginary
into everyday life.

a recording made at 4 in the morning using binaural microphones of the traffic on the Alexandria corniche and the waves breaking in the background. extensively processed using csound. the position was high up on a semi-circular facade that acted as a strange magnifier for the sound.

Java Concert #1 - Superstorm (Excerpt)

Colossus is a miniature hybrid digital/analogue device designed around a PIC microprocessor that can be programmed and live coded using one knob and one tactile button, and a voltage-controlled analogue feedback circuit. The aim of Colossus was to develop a device that questioned the relationship between coding and sound generation, and to explore performance through tangible and collective coding. There was also an attempt to consider how a reductionist approach (imposed limitations) to instrument control/design could shape a particular performance style/creative output. Moving between read and write modes (using the button) gives a musical characteristic where tension exists between periodic, looped rhythmic patterns and freer gestures derived from ‘knobbing’. The title of the device/piece is taken from the gigantic mainframe computer of Bletchley Park that is considered to be the first digital programmable computer. Initial work for Colossus was developed for projects with the University of Birmingham and the Culture Lab, Newcastle in 2015.

the third in a series of recordings made inside cement mixers. this one on a very windy day, by the sea on the byzantine island fortress of Monemvasia. after a spectral analysis of the recording, frequency areas were attenuated or amplified in an evolving manner that follows the shift in position of the mic (AT8022 stereo) inside the mixer.  

a natural drone piece with a sense of urgency,  with an eye on Fennesz and early Rypdal.

Christian Mirande - "Brevity Code"

This piece was made for the opening of the Radio Belgrade Electronic Studio on March 2 2018. 

This is my 1st recording of the real-time improvisation with EMS Synthi 100 + my computer setup.

Computer setup was based on the TouchOSC interface, Pure data patch and Ableton live. Improvisational dialogues between Synthi and computer were done through a dynamic interactive interface on my tablet and tweaking of the Synthi sounds live and playing with their parameters. I haven't used Synthi's sequencer (or a computer sequencer), but rather variety of key triggers, joysticks and envelope shaper trapezoids.

Due to a wide frequency range, it's not advisable to listen to this recording through a laptop speaker or similar.

This is my first use of the modular synthesizer in live performance and/or composition.

Alexandra Spence is an artist and musician who creates and performs in audiovisual installations, electroacoustic compositions, improvised music and experimental performance. Alex's art and music explores the idea of listening as active practice, examining the ways in which our individual notions of place and identity are shaped and mediated through sound.

Through her practice she attempts to reimagine the intricate relationships between the listener, the object, and the surrounding environment as a kind of communion or conversation. With an interest in resonance, vibration and everyday sound, her aesthetic favours small sounds, subtlety, quietude and unusual sound sources.

The Listening Body is a new collaborative project by sound artists and musicians Steven Mclnerney and Pascal Savy. Together they seek to investigate alternative ways of presenting their drone work and question the relationship between performer and audience in the context of the space in which sound and music are experienced.

The project stems from their respective practices of performing experimental music in traditional and less traditional concert venues, where the divide between stage and audience enforces the expectation of a spectacle that more often that not fails to materialise. With The Listening Body they seek to dissolve the binary nature of the concert space by asking the audience to lie on the floor and cover their eyes with sleep masks, as their sound work will be diffused throughout the room. In doing so they hope the audience can use the entire bodies as resonant sensors and reclaim the here and now of the performance as a space for direct and felt experience.

Steven McInerney will lead a sonic meditation using ancient and contemporary techniques with gongs, singing bowls and other idiophones. The symphony of sounds will allow a sense of deep relaxation which can be effective in reducing stress levels and tensions within the body. Through the process of entrainment, the phenomenon whereby both physical and biological systems synchronise their rhythm through the interaction of an external stimulus, the gong space will affect the individual on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level. These meditation instruments will be played intuitively with the highest intent to safely guide the group into the deep states of consciousness.

Pascal Savy will explore the interaction between sound, body and physical space with a new minimal composition at the intersection of drone, ambient and noise music diffused on a large quadraphonic sound system, and will seek to investigate the possibilities of experiencing sound where the entire body can act as an extended listening device triggered by the resonant properties of the room in which the work is presented. He hopes that experiencing sound as a continuum of physical vibrations mediated by the body, rather than the ear alone, will catalyse within participants a sense of physicality that is more perceptual than affective, as a way to make music a fully embodied experience. Ultimately his performance will seek to question why sound more than other experiential mode of investigations can reveal something fundamental about the ephemeral nature of reality.

We are pleased to announce CLR17, Fahmi Mursyid's 'Sejarah'. Fahmi is an Indonesian sound artist previously working with the likes of Chinabot and featured on Resonance FM. Continuing his trademark technique, Fahmi warps and reframes samples of traditional Indonesian music into something truly disarming. At times recalling the cacophonies of Berio or Xenakis, but always tempered by an ambient sensibility, Sejarah is a welcome force in the Cellar catalogue.

16.11.27 / Rue Mouffetard Street / As I have tried to explore different elements of Paris through my recordings, I think this is the one that explores the dream of Paris / I found myself smiling, enjoying just how quaint and stereotypical the scene was / It is Sunday lunchtime / The sun is shining down through the clouds onto the beautiful cobbled streets of Rue Mouffetard, one of Paris’ oldest neighborhoods / We are opposite the café Tournbride, two men sit with their espressos / Another man sits alone, newspaper in hand / The busker on the corner sets the ambience; a scruffy, middle-aged man in a dark jacket and beanie who sits on the pavement and performs wistfully and soulfully / Its a slow, relaxed Sunday for the road /

The narrow pedestrianised street is a mixture of Parisians and tourists, enjoying alike the window displays of the boutique shops, working their way down towards the market at the end of the path / A young woman cycles past on a vintage bicycle and a cat disappears down an alleyway / Even the graffiti a little way further down hides in the morning shadows, evicted by the bright sunlight that had descended on the road / This is the Paris that lives in the minds of many and indeed I would like to use this recording to keep a little bit of it like this for myself //

Rue Mouffetard Saxophone

16.11.26 / Marché Des Enfants Rouge/ Situated in the fashionable Haut Marais neighborhood, Le Marché des Enfants Rouge was created in 1615 and is the oldest covered market in Paris / Whilst it contains typical market stalls for fish, cheese, fruit and veg etc / It is well known for its street food style eateries from around the world / I saw food from Morocco, French Polynesia, Lebanon and Japan to name a few / I switched on my recorder and squeezed my way through between two adjacent queues to reach a more balanced point in the room, between the florist and the fishmongers, with some form of mini restaurant to my right and a fruit and veg stall on my left / As time went by the market got busier / I was able to hear many languages, and with the fairly low tin and glass roof overhead, everything was reflected back into the building, muddying the voices, everyone straining to be heard / As hundreds of people continued to pack into the relatively small market, the ambience reached a fever pitch / You have Parisians ordering their fresh produce and bantering with the grocers / You have diners enjoying a lunch together, socializing, catching up, discussing / And you have tourists excitedly marveling at the delicacies on offer, exclaiming to one another / 

My senses were slightly overloaded as I walked around / With the variety of sounds, smells, colours and the constantly changing crowd to weave through, it was difficult to focus on one single thing / Instead I was immersed and a little overwhelmed. It was hectic but pleasant / I chose this recording to start the album for the vibrancy of the sound and business of the recording / In fact it’s the busiest recording on the album / It is lunchtime on a Saturday afternoon – a peak time for the market / 

For me it reflects a period when I first arrived in Paris / Keen to explore and become accustomed to my new habitat, I visited the more famous and frequented touristy parts of the city / The sound typifies my feelings of arriving in the capital city and being thrown into the fast lane / Life suddenly seemed very busy and it seemed important to do everything and quickly / The recording captures the injection of vitality that being in Paris gave me / I embraced it and enjoyed it, although it could leave me exhausted, as I expect too much of this would leave your ears exhausted //

Marché Des Enfants Rouge

This CD features recordings of a now lost sculptural work that was originally commissioned in 2016 for Colour Out of Space festival. The work consists of over 100 empty computer cases, fitted with 16 customised and automated DVD drives. Between 2016 and 2018 it was exhibited in Brighton, Athens, Croydon, Oxford and Rennes, on each occasion being reconfigured into a new form. The most ambitious of these being at Detritus Festival in 2018, where a new and larger version of the work was constructed at the Onassis Cultural Centre from used computer sourced in the city. The work was sadly lost in transit between France and the UK, returning to the global trade in e-waste which its production initially sought to intervene in, so all that remains are these recordings. 

The CD is released in an edition of 150 in an oversized 7" sleeve accompanied by a 16 page risographed booklet featuring photographs and scans of the sculpture, essays by Danae Stefano and Stephen Cornford, and a letterpressed backpanel.

The sound art of Jacob Kirkegaard explores ways to reflect on immediate complex, unnoticed or unapproachable aspects of the human condition or civilisation. His works have treated themes such as radioactivity in Chernobyl and Fukushima, melting ice in the Arctic, border walls in Palestine, and tones - otoacoustic emissions - generated from the actual human ear.

When a gust comes, the "white noise" from the nearby firs strengthen, then the lower sound (little like a distant jet) from the naked birches joins in. Consumer Waste is a low impact imprint for the publication of contemporary experimental music. Jointly run by Stephen Cornford & Samuel Rodgers, it aims to document and disseminate their collaborative work as well as that of their peers and contemporaries.

In an era when cultural material is most often received through digital means, the publication of physical documents has become for many musicians simply an expedient means to put their work in the hands of the pirates. We welcome this state of affairs and will restrict our releases to editions of one or two hundred, safe in the knowledge that should the work appeal to a wider audience, it will be downloaded by them. As such the discs will carry no official copyright.

We tacitly accept that cultural production, where it simply provides yet another avenue of our consumer driven society is a morally questionable activity and have no wish to support such a system. For these reasons, the label is to be run on a strictly not-for profit basis, with all proceeds going either direct to the artist or funding the activities of the label by providing opportunities for artists to collaborate, perform, record and publish their work. The label's name derives from the 100% post-consumer waste materials that we endeavour to use in our handmade packaging.
