Program Note:
Spending time in the chambers of ancient ruins and the cavities of basilicas and churches has led to a fascination with the interaction of architecture, light, and acoustics in relation to the human spectator. The different window types (from oculus to clerestory to stained glass) guide our relationships with the spaces, recanting visual stories as they divert beams of light in paths of illumination throughout the course of the day. The same is true of the sonic qualities of these, often vast, spaces. Within "The Glow that Illuminates, The Glare that Obscures" I take the brass performance tradition of the madrigals and motets of Renaissance polyphony and pass sourced quotations through a compositional prism. The resultant fragments are illuminated and obscured in the composition through the use of antiphonal and heterophonic writing, density and silence.  Fragments of Josquin's Miserere, a spare and austere motet setting of Psalm 51, jostle our memory as they are stretched and ornamented throughout the ritualistic sonic space.

"But why on earth should a clock record any time other than the time of the existence of its own mechanism? Every blade of grass and crumpled newspaper lives in the extent of its own existence. The duration of shoe cleaning, for example, is a complex combination of "shoe time" and the time of our hands. We cannot say that after cleaning our shoes, we have become five minutes older, since the time of a living organism has nothing to do with the time of the clock mechanism. Is this a well-known truth? No. Well-known truths have nothing in common with individual truths."

    Девять полётов сквозь время — а теперь я здесь,  дома, и мне кажется: это был сон. Там и замки, руины, избушка, телега; очевидно, далёкое прошлое.

   ♩ ♪  ♫ Абсолютно все: взрослые, дети, любой расы, пола и гендера, даже царица... да нет, даже КОШКА такая была!!! с бородой и бутылочкой водки!!! В честь него, композитора Мусоргского. Очень чтим.
   ❤ Очень, очень признательны Модесту Петровичу за сюиту «Картинки с выставки». Так уж вышло — очень похожую на наш очень мистический диск.
   ☏  ✉ У них уже был Телеграм! Правда, глючный, прогулка срывалась раз десять. А потом подрались всей толпой, типа, чей трек включить по блютусу. Много водки. Не помню.

    ...Долгая история.
    А пьески на диске вот какие: «Прогулка», «Гном», «Старый замок», «Ссора после игры», «Скот с телегой» (не буду вдаваться в подробности, жуткие прокси), «Балет невылупившихся птенцов», «Катакомбы», «Баба-Яга», «Богатырские ворота». Названия — не поверите! — как у Модест Петровича. Мы бы ещё рассказали о глубокой концепции, и про аллюзии, и про музыкальную ткань...
    В общем, долгая история.

Neuro-organ composition 51. The composer is an EEG waves from a anonymous person. It is like a garden situated in another substance for me: so it sounds from the beginning.

Composition 5 - Immaterial Garden

Played by USC Thornton Symphony and Nina Shekhar, Quray (Tatar folk instrument similar to the penny whistle) on Feb. 28, 2020.

Bolghar is an ancient city located in Tatarstan, Russia, from as early as the 8th Century, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
When I’m in Bolghar, I feel my identity more precisely. I hear its voice more distinctly. It awakens in me, feelings that I am not just myself — I am someone that comes from this culture, these older generations. 
Because Bolghar is incorporated so well with nature, I’m using all the possibilities where I can refer to the basic nature of the orchestral instruments. I base my harmonies on the overtones series. With strings, I use a lot of harmonics and open strings. With winds, I use the sound of air, but it’s formed as a ritual: repeating patterns with slight differences. The flutes play with the overtone series and overblowing on the instrument. 

Sometimes in the piece, musical gestures finish abruptly, returning to a completely different color. In the climax, the music jumps to the past, and back to the present, back to the past again, and finally to the future. When I’m in this town, I feel flashes of the past — and then again I am brought to the present, talking to my friends and family. In the next moment I am thinking about the future — what’s next for us? We have to save these beautiful places.
