For the tenth installment of our mix series, we have none other than DSNT resident and Computer Controlled Records bossman Nez. Coming through with a bruising mix of bass, bleeps and out-of-this-world electro – just in time for the weekend.

If there's one thing you need to know before listening to this mix then it's this: Lerosa does not f**k about.

The Italian producer and disc jockey remains an unrivalled force amidst outsider electronics and doesn't buy into hype or false pretenses. Based in Dublin he has steadily released music prominently for over ten years and has appeared on the likes of Uzuri, Ostgut Ton and Idle Hands amongst many more. His sound is always rough and ready, drawing for the experimental and abstract whilst challenging the preconceptions and social constructs of house and electronic music at every possibility available. A keen hardware enthusiast he has a workrate which is hard to rival and this much is clear through the sheer volume of music that he has released in what is a relatively short period of time. 

His most recent album was released via Acid Test, a sub label of Los Angeles based record label Absurd Recordings. The "Bucket Of Eggs" LP is perhaps Leopold's finest work to date, showcasing an eclectic, thoughtful approach to music that is at times chaotic and coarse. It channels his humour and persona with intrigue and leaves the listener wanting more and more. 

We invited him to record a mix for the site, a contribution which is long overdue.

Hosts of the infamous, No Regrets show on Noods Radio. Deep Nalström came to light after his alluring debut release’s last year on Natural Selections and Bamboo Shows. Away from music Guillaume works as a Graphic Designer under the alias Atelier Superplus supplying some of the best posters in dance music.  

For the podcast, Deep Nalström has bundled up an intensely unpredictable venture through sounds and places touching on everything from David Crosby to 90’s trance.

This past February, MEMCO and WCBN organized a Black History Month Symposium featuring a panel of three prolific Detroit-based producers, DJs, and activists. During the conversation, each panelist used their own experience to contextualize the emergence of Detroit techno, the music’s DIY ethos, and the ways in which the music inspires their work today. Introductory comments by MEMCO co-president Jordan Stanton ('19-'20).

“Mad” Mike Banks
Mike Banks is a Detroit-based DJ, producer, and founding member of the Underground Resistance (UR). He currently lives in Detroit, Michigan and is a former studio musician, having played with Parliament/Funkadelic among others. He worked in the second half of the 1980s with the collective Members of the House, releasing several 12" singles. In the late '80s he and Jeff Mills formed UR as an uncompromising, independent outlet for music imbued with a critical edge and an often futurist outlook. Together with Mills, Banks built UR into an internationally recognized and respected name. He is also the owner of Submerge Distribution, an independent record label which distributes Detroit-based techno worldwide.

Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale
Stacey “Hotwaxx” is a DJ and producer who has been deeply embedded in Detroit’s dance scene since 1989. She was a mainstay on the radio stations in the mid to late 80s, including WLBS, WHYT, WDRQ and WJLB, and won the Motor City Mix contest 10k prize. Stacey has been featured on numerous Internet radio shows and is currently featured on www.deepspaceradio.com. She currently teaches and designs DJ & production classes with Spin Inc, Girls Rock Detroit (GRD) camp, Give A Beat, Seraphine Collective, and Detroit Students of the Arts (DSA). Hotwaxx also formed a live music group, Nyumba Muziki, which has performed at the Charles H Wright Museum of African American History, and for the Detroit 300 Conservancy.

Ron Johnson (DJ Jungle 313)
Ron is a native Detroit DJ and educator who recognized a vital need to fill the creative gaps left by the public-school system’s abandonment of an arts curricula. He is committed to empowering disadvantaged youth and at-risk communities with music that inspires. He is the executive director of Spin Inc, a 501(c)(3) organization providing DJ and Music production education for young adults in Detroit. He is also a core organizer of the annual Detroit Electronic Music Camp (DEMC) that takes place during Movement.

Detroit Techno & Resistance: A Black History Month Symposium

One of @jossymitsu's skills is her versatility. She was born and raised in Birmingham before moving to London, so has been exposed to, and immersed in, a wide array of scenes. From jungle to 2step, techno to house, rave to leftfield, she has knowledge of it all and never fails to throw it down in electrifying style. Her Rinse FM radio show has proved that over the last few years, and earlier this year the 6 Figure Gang associate made her production debut on Astral Black's Frass FM compilation with the brilliantly bumping 'Whirl.'

That track's cavernous bass and sparse late night atmosphere also characterises this week's mix. It's a selection filled with broken beats and metallic hits that lurch through desolate landscapes. As much as she can nail an absorbing atmosphere, Mitsu also knows just how to raise the levels by banging through flailing jungle, wild rave and blistering techno. But whether the hits are crisp and the kicks taught, swampy synths and low end wobble blast from the speakers or dark and dirty breaks bust out of the mix, this is pure body music that cannot fail to ignite your dancing spirit.

Before COVID 19 dominated our lives it used to be socially acceptable (encouraged?) for a couple hundred people to be sweating on top of each other at 6 a.m on a Salford industrial estate, how times have changed.

At the start of the year after a couple months of touring i felt like i had managed to build up a specific aesthetic with my djing that this club set captured pretty well. Those closing hours of the party are often the ones I feel most comfortable in and The White Hotel is probably the best venue in the country, these factors combined made this show my favorite of 2020 (all 3 months of it) 

We managed to get the first couple hours of my set recorded so here is an excerpt from the evening.

Rough and ready with bags of energy, I hope u enjoy it as much as i did, much love to the stamina cru for staying with me.

MIMS is excited to share a deep and varied but suitably acid soaked mix from Osaka's Akio Nagase. 

A low-key figure in the Japanese underground for over 20 years, Akio Nagase recently stepped into the spotlight with his Darker Than Wax debut, the genre-defying Roots Magic EP. The Osaka-born producer and DJ honed his craft in the early 2000s, hosting his ‘Makedub’ party in Osaka, and putting out an album and string of singles on Tokyo labels Sound Channel and Rudiments. After a quiet period throughout the 2010s, the artist has returned with a refined, vibrant sound showcased first on his 2019 release with Osaka label Chill Mountain, and now on Darker Than Wax.

Hailing from Brussels, Bandler Ching is a creation of musical ideas from composer and saxophonist Ambroos De Schepper. Flawlessly blending contemporary jazz, electronics, hip-hop, noise and global beats, the sound is based around the freedom of expression and improvisation and performed with dazzling conviction.

“If there is any connection between these tracks, it's groove or the imagination of groove. Some of them are rather dark and trap-like, others are dreamy or nostalgic, others are dub and jazz. Hi Everybody, we're almost at the last edition "My Favorite Things" show of this very strange year. 

Show #29 has a very particular flavor cause I’m very happy to receive my favorite Parisian DJ : Emanuela De Luca. To welcome this very special guest, I started the show with a very special track from 1957 by a legendary french singer on a lovely jazz melody. As usual I have selected some of my last favorite diggings like the great cover of the huge spiritual jazz theme  "The Creator Has a Master Plan" by Dezron Douglas & Brandee Younger, a track from the last fusion album from Byron the Aquarius, the brand new Jimi Tenor and Kokoroko and the fabulous Sun Palace’s Edit from Moodymann on BBE. To complete my personal part, here are two lovely soul nuggets : Arthur "So close to you" with its folk attitude and the 1st reissue of the Brand New Kev Beadle Label by Dianne Mower "The Secret Sign".

The Emanuela’s mix starts with some Soul Jazz Gliding including a very actual track called « I'll sing from my window » from O'Donel Levy … if you follow what I mean !!! Her mix carries on with some great deep and mellow tunes by Eiji Nakayama, Noe's Jazz Ensemble, Tom Scott & the L.A. Express, Catalyst  and the italian Sestetto Dino Piana & Oscar Valdambrini. Gradually the selection goes into some wicked fusion Jazz Dancefloor including Ryo Kawasaki (RIP), Boy Katindig and the anthem "Sombre Guitar" by Danser's Inferno.
