As a DJ, producer, remixer, sound engineer, and musician Justin Van Der Volgen has both feet firmly planted in the New York music scene. He runs the My Rules imprint and has released on a wide array of labels including Golf Channel (@olfhannelecordings), @ESP-Institute, @Warp-records, @RunningBack - the list goes on. Justin was fortunate enough to dance at iconic NYC parties like Body & Soul, Shelter, and Soul Summit which helped shape and influence his taste. In this mix he takes it back to the Golden Age of New York House by drawing on said influences and taking inspiration from the legendary NYC Kiss FM and WBLS radio master mixes by the likes of Bobby Konders, Tony Humphries and John Robinson. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.
