You do get some nice surprises in this SC audiosphere of ours.

Imagine my delight when out of the blue Paco dropped me a note saying he'd composed some music and wondered if I might have a bash at some lyrics to match.  Of course, I jumped at the chance.

It transpired that his composition wasn't about anything in particular, rather, it was just one of those pieces that sort of emerge from a theme somewhere and grow into something very worthwhile but difficult to "place".  However, in our discussions about possible development ideas, I couldn't help but notice Paco's deep affection for his home city of Seville, and there’s only ever one outcome when England meets Seville…. 

Thank you so much, Paco, for the invitation to make some musical marmalade -  it was a hoot “jamming” with you!

I arrived in London in early ‘71 and landed on the Holland Road, Shepherd’s Bush not long after.
My good pal Julie Lewis (from Durham) with whom I’d worked with in Sydney, had digs there and invited me to stay. Nonetheless I found it a challenging place to be after Sydney, Summer, beaches, family and gigs. Amongst Julie’s record collection was Nick Drake’s 'Bryter Later' which brought solace to me as I often felt very alone and completely at a loss as to how to navigate London town.

Years later I was to learn that Freddie Mercury was living just a few doors down from us on the Holland Road...no I never knew him...but when I wrote the lyric it seemed apt to pay homage to Freddie and our collective dreams. I’m so happy with Cripple Club’s interpretation of the lyrics, bringing to life a musical collage that depicts the highs and lows of living on the Holland Road through my first cold winter! From my heart; thank you Terry & Gary Reeves; you are two soulful & gifted brothers; I feel so indebted to you both and to Hans Albers for his powerful musical contributions. I grew up in the Mississippi Delta on a Louisiana share cropper's farm.   A lot of hard work and a lot of good memories.  Those days are gone now.  Sometimes that farm feels like a long lost friend.   I can feel the wind as it blows through my hair and smell the rain as it approaches and falls on plowed ground.

  https://soundcloud.com/keitonie  caught my attention.  he was born to this stuff.       I tried to sing along to some tracks he had up and it wasn't so easy.  I either sounded like an elvis impersonator, or someone trying to take a dump.  After dozens of tries i began to feel my way into the music...

I Heard It Through The Grapevine - Cover

Started with a few simple tracks - vocals, my Martin Acoustic, a little backing vocal, and some quiet harp texturing. Marc Elluse wrapped my tracks with his luscious guitar work and tweaked a mix that just blew my mind. I'm so very proud to be part of this project and cannot say enough about the creativity and skill Marc brought to make this a recognizable cover, but a totally unique one, as well. We didn't want a sub-par soundalike version of this Classic Rock masterpiece. MakaVox Sax (jazzy key synth) in the mix, as well. :D
