Joining us for Tapes #118 is Tai Lokun, one of the UK’s newest rising DJs.The London-based DJ has lived around the globe and brings many of her far reaching influences into her eclectic sets. Though her signature style involves gracefully weaving between genres, she finds her sweet spot in classic house, percussive drums, breaks and groovy techno.  When Tai is at a festival or a rave, her core goal is to always create fun, memorable moments for all those sharing the space with her.

Despite being a newcomer, Tai has played not only within Europe but as far as Bali and Singapore. The Rinse FM resident had a busy festival-filled season in 2023 where she played shows around Europe including the new The Levels stage, in Silver Hayes at Glastonbury, Gala festival and Dutch favourite, Draaimolen. She also made her mark playing at popular European clubs such at Lofi in Amsterdam and Ibiza’s Pikes.

aka-Sol is one of the multiple monikers of multidisciplinary artist Sol León. They are part of the Dripping collective in NY as well as in charge of the Acacia Baila label that focuses on global dance music informed by psychedelic encounters and the sensual nature of rhythm and sound. Their DJ sets are known to be expansive and dynamic, always defying linearity while maintaining the trance induced essence of the clubbing experience.

Track highlight:
Toman - Dolce Far Niente 
I chose this track because it's a bouncy, groove-driven house roller that embodies the kind of energy I look for in my sets. Its natural swing makes it effortless to move to, creating an instant vibe. It’s the kind of track that subtly evolves, keeping the dance floor engaged without overwhelming the listener. 
The track's composition is refreshingly simple, which I really appreciate. 

What stands out to me is the tasteful use of stabbing synths, paired with a gradual decay that complements the deep, driving bassline. This combination really elevates the track, reinforcing the track's rhythm while adding texture, giving it that perfect balance of momentum and groove that makes it such a dance floor-ready track.

"After buying a house with my gf in early 2019 I told myself I’d have to stop buying records for a year or two until we built our savings back up. This was obviously quite the deluded sentiment in retrospect. Countless moments of weakness and ‘exceptions’ later, I shifted my strategy toward ignoring all the $40 hypebeast-bait records on Discogs and letting frugality be the guiding spirit for all future grips. In other words: cheap records only. Since then, I’ve come across more excellent, surprising and refreshing records than any other period of digging I can recall. Bonus: it kicked me out of the human-centipede of ‘digger’ culture and led me toward more unique sounds than those en vogue or that I would have previously played. This mix is a showcase of some of the frugal grippos."
