North Carolina's Nadia Khan first appeared to us at Phonica when we heard her excellent release on Brooklyn label Scissor & Thread back in 2018, an exercise in subtlety and restraint, which is a delicate balance in a lot of ambient music. A later cassette only release on Where to Now was another example of  'less is more' and that is definitely the ethos of Nadia's mix for Off The Record.
So sit back and enjoy almost an hour's sonic journey of melodic ambience and delicate evolving textures . The mix features tracks from D.K. , Huerta, NewWorldaquarium, Fred P, Exael and Christopher Rau, amongst others. Enjoy this immersive deep-listening experience from Nadia Khan.

Currently based in Portland, Oregon, Joel Shanahan produces under the aliases Golden Donna, Auscultation, and Purpura. With a wide variety of releases on small but renowned labels like 100% Silk, CGI Records, Not Not Fun, Micronesia, Digitalis, and Sacred Phrases, Shanahan has proved to be a prolific artist. His live sets are well known for their contagiously powerful energy. If you've caught one of these performances you'll notice at least one of two things happening to yourself, an uncontrollable smile or your swaying hips. Close your eyes and let Joel take you away! 

This mix is a stark contrast from that sort of vibrant energy discussed previously but is still reminiscent of the artist. An introspective journey that I think we could all use while navigating what seems to be an endless election cycle and anxiety inducing year fraught with a global pandemic and civil unrest. Take a break. Close your eyes and just live in this moment he's setting.
When asked about this mix, Shanahan had this to say, "This mix is the classically brutal tale of meeting someone great at the wrong time, in the wrong place, under abysmal circumstances. And while I may or may not ever enter this individual's orbit again, I've learned to appreciate these glimmers of hope as they shine brightly and then fade and fall gently to the ground. I've learned to appreciate a moment for exactly what it is—a moment. 
I recorded this as a dedication to this individual when the coast was burning and the air quality index was exceeding 500 on the daily, adding yet another layer of terror on top of all the other layers that existed before it. 
The mix felt good to record and share, but I admittedly have no idea if this person has even listened to it. If not—hey, it's OK, that's life, and I sure appreciate the moment in all its impermanence." 
We hope they enjoyed it cause we sure did.
