No In Between

After their celestial Arcturian Corridor opened proceedings on Quindi, London-based brothers Clive and Mark Ives are back with a new record. When Woo first began recording at home in the early 70s, Clive and Mark were the embodiment of furtive genius. Since re-emerging in 2013, they’ve released scores of albums, collaborated with Seahawks, and have now struck up a productive relationship with Quindi.

On Paradise In Pimlico, you’re hearing a very different sound to the one gently creaked out on early classics like Into The Heart Of Love. This is fulsome, contemporary production rich in detail and artful sound design, but crucially, Clive and Mark’s gorgeously melodic approach remains open and inquisitive, even with the sheen and shimmer of modern studio techniques.

Woo sound more confident than ever in their composition, too. The crystalline, fragile tones of ‘Cadenza D’Innocenza’ glide through key changes that spell out an engrossing narrative, while the cascading melodies on ‘Moment To Moment’ pirouette across the space between notes with masterful poise. ‘Paradise In Pimlico’ is an illustrious suite of orchestral composition played out with the lightest touch, framed by the slightest of synthesized fauna and topped off with tender sax and flute. Album closer ‘In Case Love Fails’ takes on a subtly cinematic urgency with its undercurrents of walking bass and the strike of the string section (synthetic or otherwise).

There’s space for markedly new approaches, too. The rhythm section on ‘The Motorik Mirror’ clunks and pops with a tactile, high-definition quality which teeters between electronic sculpture and clockwork, organic machination. The deft, lightly-brushed drums coursing through ‘Even More Notes’ see Clive and Mark step into a different mood, celebrating the beat as another fluid, tonally-rich texture in the mix and adding a smoky, jazzy hue to the Woo repertoire.

It’s far from a drum-focused exercise though. At every turn, you’re confronted with aching beauty and timbral surprises. If there’s one constant throughout Paradise In Pimlico, it’s the omnipresent chimes. These twinkling drops of light scattered throughout are something of a hallmark of Woo, ensuring the lilting, lullaby-like magic of their music persists whichever direction they head in.

When one of our most revered artists offered us the chance to include an exclusive track we of course jumped at the chance. As expected, what we received blew us away and we knew it had to be the lead single from the compilation. 

Hearing the Swedish outfit Sven Wunder for the first time is as refreshing as an ice-cold Limoncello after an Italian meal. One of those artists that feel instantly familiar like an old friend, yet simultaneously fresh and new. Having released three stunning albums adored by a rapidly growing fanbase, and a host of critical acclaim from the likes of the New York Times, Pitchfork and the Quietus to name just a few, the expectation of what is to come next from this wonderfully unique artist is palpable. 

Mosaic' — conceived for Mr Bongo Record Club Vol.5 — merges jazz and rock, by building a detailed pattern garnished by regular and irregular pieces containing guzheng (also known as the Chinese zither), baroque harpsichord and driving drums all framed and contrasted by lush strings, brass and woodwind. The result stands in some way between Wabi Sabi (2020) and Natura Morta (2021), a perfect exploration point for a unique sound that appeals to both psych and prog listeners, folk or jazz aficionados and as well the gourmet hip hop connoisseurs.

Sven Wunder - Mosaic

Nothing Is Real Records (@nothingisrealrecords) celebrates spring with another great Mexican producer, Alfredo Cardenàs aka Montessori (@montessorimusicmx), already recognized for his Rhythmic enveloping and energetic style of productions. The quality of his music caught the attention of many producers, djs and dancers in the game. The Montessori EP is formed by 4 dancefloor oriented tracks.

The main track ‘Glue In The Sand’ is a perfect example of modern indie dance, with the fresh addiction of trippy synths and fx, the tailored vocal of Vongold (@nvongold) captures the attention of the listeners giving a lovely shape. Instead ‘Digital Mind’ is an obscure dark piece of dance music with a special tech flavor, perfect for the need of pushing more when the crowd is ready.

You can immediately hear the desire of experimenting different roads on the arrangement from the German duo Peter Invasion (@peter-invasion) and Gregor Habicht (@gregor-habicht) on their remix of Glue In The Sand: the work on electro elements and the sliced pieces of vocals are simply unique, a solid inprint from the producers.

Astroloop is on board remixing Glue In The Sand with a simple but effective bassline, gated synths and acid moments trying to maintain the moving of the track with the change of elements.

"SPINNING AWAY is a very easy one for me to talk about, because it has a feature that I like a lot, and that I have used before as well. I like very much to have contrasts of speed. For instance I like to have very very fast staccato rhythms, chopped-up rhythms, which very liquid vocals running over the top of them. Maybe the best example of this is not on one of my records, but on the Donna Summer song "I Feel Love" with Georgio Moroder playing. The synthesizer part on that is very very technological and mechanical, Kraftwerk almost, but her singing over it is just like a beautiful liquid feeling going on over the top. Anyway, I have that kind of feeling in Spinning Away, something of two very opposing qualities: a rhythm that is staccato, off-balance slightly. If you listen to the way the drums begin on that song, they have a strange, off-balance feeling. Their sound is crisp. The vocals on the other hand, and the violins are not played in the same mood, they're in almost a different musical universe. They float on top of this sea of action, you know, this sea of activity. And the violins play in a different time signature: dam dam dam dam dada over taka tak taka taka taka tak taka taka... The AA-Side features Alexis Taylor’s version of The Weaker Soldier, from Arise Therefore, Bonnie’s 1996 LP with Palace Music.
