Bone Meal is written in one continuous movement which lasts around six minutes, and was commissioned by the Manchester-based Vonnegut Collective, blueSCI and Seed Studios, to whom it is dedicated.

Titles carry a lot of baggage for me as a composer: often I find them to be a very polarising entity within my compositional process (they either really help or they really don't!).Bone Meal is taken from the opening of Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five (1969). The protagonist Billy Pilgrim uses the phrase 'bone meal' to describe the amount of human remains he guesses are in the ground around the German city of Dresden. The piece in no way sets out to describe the horrors of Dresden, but more explores the ironic, twisted, satiric overtones found throughout Vonnegut's work: phrases such as Bone Meal utilise (to my mind) Vonnegut's technique of using humour and farce as a means to describe the horrors of war. In this piece, Bone Meal came extremely late in the compositional process, but seemed to 'fit' the brash, angular, often quasi-comical material found within.

The piece overall is in many ways a concertino for soprano saxophone, interrupted only briefly by a plaintive violin melody towards the end. The work as a whole is a collage of musical 'moments' which are linked through a series of repeating intervals and melodic motifs.

I am indebted to Gemma and Gary of the Vonnegut Collective for commissioning the work, and for their enthusiasm with the project.
