“American Lover” showcases their "SAD BOY DISCO" concept in all its tipsy glory. Teshima stumbles through memories, reflecting and trying to move on. Yet this plays out over synth notes and a beat that sways forward, prone to sudden turns but always grounded in a rhythm apt for the dance floor. Australian producer Super Magic Hats offers up a dreamy rework here, as well. 

This is just the first chapter in ELLEH’s sad boy disco story. They will release their first EP, Anthems Part 1 this April, featuring “American Lover” and building on it thematically, exploring one person’s bargaining with heartbreak and turning to music as salvation as the dawn approaches.

Live from New York, it’s Songmess! Yes, you read that right. This incredibly special episode was recorded live at New Latin Wave with a packed audience and our incredible guests, Boston-based Chilean band Breaking Forms!!! 

The duo is comprised of Juan Necochea and Nicole L'Huillier, brilliant musicians from Chile's lauded indie scene. With Juan originally a part of Picnic Kibun and Nicole from Condor Jet, both musicians came together for Breaking Forms to push the boundaries of their music, studies and love. The band has released two EPs thus far, developing a sound that is dreamy and fast, whimsical yet heart-pounding.

We want to give huge thanks to Sokio, Amanda and New Latin Wave for inviting and hosting us so kindly, and we're sending lots of love to all the friends who were in the audience supporting. This episode is great. This band is great. Y'all are great!

Today, we welcome our eleventh guest mix selection on @subcityradio - this time from Japanese New Age music guru and obscure Anime soundtrack specialist Tsunaki Kadowaki (@tsuna-psychedelia).

Tsunaki is a Tottori-based collector, writer and new age music enthusiast. He works at Meditations record store in Kyoto - arguably the best spot for vinyl in Japan and recently published New Age Music Disc Guide, a book of 600 new age and ambient album recommendations. The guide provides a comprehensive overview of new age music, covering releases from the ‘70s all the way up to the genre’s recent revival. For now, it’s only been published in Japanese, but thanks to the album artworks that beautifully adorn each page, it’s still an absolutely essential document for devotees of the genre.

Tsunaki’s guest mix is titled Japanese Obscure Anime Music for Experimental Music Freaks and it does just that - assembling music primarily collected from rare Japanese anime and manga image albums and soundtracks of the late 1980s/90s. It’s a collection of many moods; mysterious and intricate, delirious and luxurious. Revisiting the halcyon days of such movements is always interesting – the amateur enthusiast hasn’t yet been banned, or bartered out of existence; distribution is among friends. Rough edges remain, are encouraged. Odd characters linger on the circumference engaged in extracurricular experiments and unlikely crosscurrents.

For enthusiasts, this is a seductive prospect of both escape and compensation, insight and freakout. A unique collection of sounds that leaves you wanting more.
