Disquiet Junto submissions

Condensation is a form of change, but this is only half of the story. Condensation is what happens when vapor transforms to a liquid state; evaporation is what happens when liquid changes back to vaporous form. It’s a constant, cyclical form of reclaiming what was lost.

Michael John Harris, author of the book The End of Absence, has an interesting perspective on loss vs. gain: “My child will never know the value of learning to read a map without GPS. This is the problem with losing lack: it’s nearly impossible to recall its value once it’s gone.“ 

Some cognitive scientists argue that digital media has rendered our brains into mush. Others believe that, like how the clouds above manage moisture content, it’s simply a matter of displacing one form of cognitive processing with another.

For this Junto project, Suss Müsik explored the cyclical nature of something being there and then not there. The original photo was scanned and rendered to high-contrast, which revealed two distinct patterns: the first a reasonably formed outline comprising a circle (we’ll call that v.1), the other a series of amorphous blobs (v.2). 

v.1 became the basis for a cyclical riff played on fake bass and a DIY synth device. v.2 was played by tracing a finger across a DIY piezo mic resonator (constructed from old hard drive enclosures) and passing the signal through a Meng Qi Wingie 2. Some sloppy piano was overdubbed; interruptions were designed per interpretation of the “score.”

The piece is titled after Hieronimo Squarciafico, the 15th-century Venetian editor who warned that the invention of the printing press would inhibit humankind’s ability to remember things.

The Assignment: Rework environmental sound recordings with Aphex Twin’s new software.

Step 1: There’s a new piece of freely available software called Samplebrain. It was designed by Aphex Twin and developed by Dave Griffiths of Then Try This. Download Samplebrain and read up at:

Step 2: Create a piece of music using Samplebrain. For source audio, only use sounds tagged “bird” or “rain” or “night” from freesound.org 4. Use as many as you like. Be sure to credit the source material when posting your finished track.

Track notes: 

I decided to use only two samples for this samplebrain composition: "Rain.wav" from idomusics as my 'brain' sound and the delightfully named "French men in the deep night.wav" from satoration as my target. 

Having been listening to a lot of Rolf Julius' small music lately, I'm impressed with the variances in pitch and dynamic to these textures and how interesting they might sound broadcast at very low volumes or with the stereo field separated out. I'm looking forward to experimenting more with the app!

20221202 MIDI Piano Variations [disquiet0570]

A drum/percussion track for Disquiet Junto 0572: Rhythm Kit. Instruction: Record a beat with the intension that someone other than yourself will add something to it at a later date. 

These sounds were recorded during live jam with Creatures Once bandmate Monstrosus on Dec 10. We played live on some iOS apps conrolled by Korg nano keys, the Alesis e-drum kit, and Drumbrute Impact. We're both drummers as a first instrument so we always have fun with the drums. Had some other instrument sounds going in the jam, but took those out for this rhythm kit version. Arrangement kinds of follows how the jam played out, with M going off on the e-drums to cap things off. Hope someone in the Junto enjoys this beat! 
My family baked biscotti while I edited this, then we had a nice cuppa chai to go along.

Biscotti and Chai Rhythm Kit - [disquiet0572]

My process was to bring the assignment's three samples into Audacity and then extract parts for percussion loops and isolated sounds. In Audacity I pieced together different pitches of one piano note into three; layered one sound on top of itself backwards; and some pitch-stretching. I dropped these into Garageband and moved them around.

Since the source track is bass and rhythm-oriented I focused on higher-pitched or non-percussive sounds.  The Sears field recordings were made this weekend so they were on my mind when composing as a sound source. I can see seven tracks but hope the disparate "sounds" unify into one musical piece in the listeners' minds.

except one track of a field recording of cicadas I made in North Carolina this summer; and a second of a slowed-down piledriver from the building work around China Basin in San Francisco. The SoundTransit sounds are all reused under their Creative Commons license.

All sounds arranged and mixed in Garageband. 

My intent was to make the basic foley sound of a spaceship in space at the moment a character plays a cassette featuring the crickets/rain earth sounds. From the movie I expect lots of engine rumble and pipe sounds during their long journey. Matt Damon was creepy in that movie.

Beacon - Toaster - Remix (Disquiet0204 - Underbeat)

For this Disquiet assignment, looking at the graphic notation, the main keyboard plays the three full notes and pause. The drum tattoos were an attempt to play the second notation hidden behind the first but I lost track. The third track slides and panning represent the spiral, telescoping edge of the wooden object behind the two sheets.
