Episode 86 - Double A & Special Guest Jeremy Born

Initially, I thought Gabber wouldn't be my cup of tea, but archive.org had some really interesting modern Gabber tracks under a Creative Commons License. The song that appealed to me the most was from an Indonesian production (Gabber Modus Operandi - Puxxximaxxx, "Hey Nafsu", https://archive.org/details/yesno091).

Ninety-nine percent of the sounds came from the track. I chopped up the snippets with Voltage Modular, stretched them in Ableton, and maltreated them with long effects chains. To add a bit of Ambient cliche, I added the song of a humpback whale (because, why not – sometimes a track needs a pink fluffy unicorn ribbon).

It still sounds rough around the edges, but maybe there's a genre of noise ambient it fits into.

Disquiet Junto Project 0556: Gabber Ambient
The Assignment: Field-test a hybrid genre.

Gabber and ambient music seem like polar opposites. Gabber is typified by a constant distorted kick drum pummelling you at upwards of 200bpm. Ambient, on the other hand, can be deeply immersive or barely noticeable. This project asks the question: is “gabber ambient” possible?

Step 1: Consider what makes gabber gabber and what makes ambient ambient. Where is there crossover?

Step 2: Make a track that could be construed as “gabba ambient.”

Step 3: You’re probably going to want to delete it. Try not to. Save and upload.

A table by the sea and the condensation water of some bottles have left their mark. I like that. 

I interpreted the score as follows:

1. first, I see grains of sand on a surface. The grains suggest - simply put - a granular treatment of a pad or surface. 
2. the circles reminded me of the loop representation of the loopy app. So I recorded four loops. Wherever two "grooves" were visible, I played two notes, otherwise, I used just one; the fatter a groove, the greater the amplitude. I used Bardzo, Pigments, and SQ80-V. 
3. I ignored the fifth circle discreetly because it didn't fit into the piece anymore. Shame on me. 

First, the "table" (drone) starts, then the bottles (loops) are introduced with one time each. Once all four have played twice, they are removed again, until the piece ends.

Four on a Beach  [disquiet0557]

Condensation is a form of change, but this is only half of the story. Condensation is what happens when vapor transforms to a liquid state; evaporation is what happens when liquid changes back to vaporous form. It’s a constant, cyclical form of reclaiming what was lost.

Michael John Harris, author of the book The End of Absence, has an interesting perspective on loss vs. gain: “My child will never know the value of learning to read a map without GPS. This is the problem with losing lack: it’s nearly impossible to recall its value once it’s gone.“ 

Some cognitive scientists argue that digital media has rendered our brains into mush. Others believe that, like how the clouds above manage moisture content, it’s simply a matter of displacing one form of cognitive processing with another.

For this Junto project, Suss Müsik explored the cyclical nature of something being there and then not there. The original photo was scanned and rendered to high-contrast, which revealed two distinct patterns: the first a reasonably formed outline comprising a circle (we’ll call that v.1), the other a series of amorphous blobs (v.2). 

v.1 became the basis for a cyclical riff played on fake bass and a DIY synth device. v.2 was played by tracing a finger across a DIY piezo mic resonator (constructed from old hard drive enclosures) and passing the signal through a Meng Qi Wingie 2. Some sloppy piano was overdubbed; interruptions were designed per interpretation of the “score.”

The piece is titled after Hieronimo Squarciafico, the 15th-century Venetian editor who warned that the invention of the printing press would inhibit humankind’s ability to remember things.

4 Sec Mix (disquiet0560)

[disquiet0560] Wiki

The one instruction for this week's Disquiet Junto assignment was to use an octave leap, which is something I quite often do anyway. 

So, I just set about writing a new track without thinking too hard about the brief. I actually started with the percussion that shows up later in the track.

The root on the opening part steps down an octave before introducing the next chord in the progression.

A two-note synth part is just the minor 7 on two octaves (with a major 6 once for colour - still fits the Dorian mode but is pretty HELLO when it shows up imo).

A second synth part doubles the guitar harmonic sounds, coming in via an opening low-pass filter. That synth part has its pitch modulated by a little step sequence, so it steps up one or two octaves, and the rate at which that's happening in shifting about. That part then runs into a delay (Valhalla Delay) which as a descending octave shift in the feedback patch.

A synth bass part arrives later that is just sustained notes following the root of each chord, but an arpeggiator steps up and down an octave. Kind of like with the pitch modulation on the other synth, the tempo of the arpeggiator is being modulated by an LFO, then quantised, to make it less synth disco / Girls & Boys.

For Disquiet Junto 220 - "Make overtly rhythmic music from short loops of overtly arrhythmic source audio" - I pieced together vocal fragments from a synthesized voice talking about photographic copyright, and Michelle Bachmann, and then looping them in places to make them more rhythmic. A backing track of a street musician playing part of the Godfather theme gets a similar treatment towards the end.
