empathy // cassette [2020] (w/ score)

When Tears are Weightless in the Air is a piece for a string quartet. The idea of this composition comes from an article by P.L. de Zwart, B.F. Jeronimus, P. de Jonge in Epidemiology and Psychiatric Sciences. It is composed of a structure based on an image of a Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) episode. Also, an exploration of communication with one another can be found in the timbres and dynamics of the string quartet.

There's not much to say about D>C, it's a piece for guitar and electronics with a reduced discourse in which the guitar completes the digital support using percussive sounds and such...

Cheuk Shing Li (Sampson) is a Hong Kong-born composer whose works explore sound, texture, and timbre.  
 

Sampson’s compositions have been recognized internationally. His recognitions include winning the 2023 JACK Studio (JACK Quartet), the Barcelona Modern International Composition Course Call for Scores, Toolbox Percussion International Composition Competition, Hong Kong New Music Ensemble Sonic-Visual Interplay (CoLab) Call. He was also a finalist in the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild New Generation Competition (2022 and 2023) and a recipient of scholarships such as the David M. Schimmel Memorial Composition Scholarship Fund and the Dr. Paul Gregory Bonneau Memorial Composition Scholarship in 2024.

 

His works have been performed by ensembles like the Barcelona Modern Ensemble, New Morse Code, Romer Quartet, Dawning Quartet, Hong Kong New Music Ensemble,  JACK Quartet. They have been featured in renowned festivals, including the Barcelona Modern Festival and the Toolbox International Creative Academy.

 

Sampson is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Music Composition at the University of North Texas, where he studies with Panayiotis Kokoras and Jon Nelson. He previously earned a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Music from Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), studying composition with Camilo Mendez and Stylianos Dimou.


Sampson’s development as a composer has been further enriched by Chaya Czernowin, Héctor Parra, Ken Ueno, Daniel D’adamo, Nathaniel Stookey and Chikako Morishita.
