We don’t look up enough.
We don’t look up enough and realize what we’re a part of.
The other night,
I tried to comprehend how long ago this all began
I read that the big bang was 13.7 billion years ago.
If you took the life of the universe and condensed it down to 10 years
I would have only been alive for the last half a second.

…Crazy.

So I try to look up more often
To keep me honest
To put things into context 
But I still don’t do it often enough
I look down plenty, though
At myself.

We all began holding hands
But then we got this idea
That we were separate
The "individual"
We each watered our own seed that we were promised would grow into success trees
Until they grew into dense, dark forests where not a glimpse of another soul could crack though the branches
Over time,
Our vision narrowed
We wore ambitions as blinders
Focused straight as an arrow
The mirror became more important than the playground
Hopscotch on blacktops became fresh cuts and flat tops
Prophecies changed
“Sharing is caring” became, “what the hell is she wearing”
And we became so determined to climb our success trees so that we could feel tall
Maybe we could buy a treehouse
Take out a treemortgage
Settle down with our 2.3 treekids, our treespouse, and repair an occasional treedoor hinge

But then,
We would never realize what we could do if we worked as one
Multiply towards a product greater than our sum 
Until we decided to tie all our trees together
And build a treetop community centre
That's when we started thinking about ways to make all of us better
See, we like to talk about ourselves as individuals but really
There’s no such thing
We grew from the same seed
Cut from the same cloth
Fell from the same trees
And we like to talk about success 
But that’s just what we do for ourselves
I want to be judged by how many smiles I can put on another person’s face
By what I offer to those who have nothing to offer me 
By how well I make others feel welcome
By how much knowledge and love I can spread throughout space
So let’s look up
That way that from now til forever
We won’t just dream big,

We’ll dream together.
