Oie Voaldyn

The Isle of Man was a Norse-ruled nation from c.800 until c.1100 and the Island today still bares remnants of that period in the many Scandinavian placenames all over the Island.
This has led some to suggest that the Island lost its Gaelic language during this period, only to regain it after 1100.
Professor George Broderick, however, here argues convincingly that the Isle of Man has a continuous Gaelic-speaking past. He makes this argument with references to a number of fascinating key factors including Manx placenames, Manx-Norse runes, and history.

"Was Gaelic still spoken in the Isle of Man during the Norse period?" Professor George Broderick

Based on an old Manx Celebration (April 30th)& Commissioned by the Oie Voaldyn Festival, this piece of music marks the change from Winter to Summer festival, through the symbolic Black Raven which holds a special place in Manx folklore and mythology. The piece was designed to mark change for the better, working well also with Oie Houney/Hop Tu Naa the oldest unbroken tradition in the Isle of Man original which saw the bad spirits away ahead of the Winter to come.
