Future Funk, Virtual Disco

First monthly mix from my good friend DINOSAURUS REX.  Great diversity on this mix and a lot of tracks I haven't heard in quite some time, hence the name "Throwbacks".  Here's a song by song description written by him.

This is a mix that I am hesitantly calling the "Throwback" mix - because it's chopped full of oldie-but-goodies. 
Of course, there are also some new tunes, so bare with me.

Kaligraph E - Imaginate - I remember first hearing this track sometime right around the time that Kaligraph E dropped his "Done Good EP". That is a brilliant release, and this song is a fantastic follow up.

Vanilla - Who Do You Love - This is a tune that Vanilla released on Pragmatic Theory's "New Classics". We here at KEATS//COLLECTIVE really like everything that Rhythm22 and Pragmatic Theory do. We here at KEATS//COLLECTIVE definitely love everything that Vanilla is doing.  

Handbook - Take Me Up High - This is my absolute favorite era of Handbook - when he released "All the Time". It is perhaps one of the best, most catchy beattapes I have heard. Don't let the album art fool you - this is professional beat-work.

Constrobuz - Burning Light - Another classic from the Pragmatic Theory fam, this one just has major vibes. I don't know for sure, but to me that vocal sample sounds like the Isley Brothers. You can't go wrong with Ronald Isley.

ERNST JR - Closer To You - Full disclosure - ERNST JR is my brother. But that doesn't stop this from being one of my favorite songs out right now. The way Matt flipped the chord change with those tasteful blips of vocals just hits me right. K//C can't wait to show you what ERNST JR has been cooking up. Stay tuned for that.

Maitro - Patience - This is perhaps the first Maitro tune I ever heard. I don't think you can find it on Soundcloud anymore. This song is awesome, and it reminds me of an old Handbook tune (perhaps even a tune from "All the Time") - Maitro does this sample justice. 

Elaquent - Noir - This EQ tune is off the first Soulection Compilation. That was a big release for me - I still listen to it often. This is one of my favorite tracks from that release. Short but sweet. 

Kaligraph E - Space (Vanilla Remix) - I spoke to Kaligraph E's "Done Good EP" earlier, and here's a taste. Though this is the Vanilla remix, I must say this is my all-time favorite tune on Done Good EP. Vanilla brought out the big guns for the flip with that gorgeous vocal sample "I'm so glad". 

KEV//BOT - Poolside - Kevin and I joke about this song all of the time, because, in my opinion, it is the best KEV//BOT song on 1514. If I am remembering correctly, he thinks it's perhaps the worst song on that record. Nevertheless, I really enjoy the drum track on this tune and I love the way he plays with the side chain. There is waaayyy too much side chaining - but like, in the best way possible. This song kills.

Ape Tit - Make Love To You - Ape Tit is a local group (local to me, in Denver, CO) and they are awesome. This is my favorite tune they have done to this day. Great chord change and that smacking bass. Can't go wrong with this tune.

Lapti - Phat - My buddy Davis played this song on his radio show and I was smitten. That was like, a year ago. More recently, I found a mix CD Davis made in my car and found the song. I had to text him to ask who the artist was, so I don't have much to say about Lapti. Sorry, man.

Flamingosis - Porno Music - Aaron is a cool dude and we always love doing releases with him. His latest K//C release (a split with the gawd Flandy) featured a lot of great music, but this tune trumped them all. It also helps that Monikard made a killer tape-wave video for this one. Great tune.

DINOSAURUS REX - Time For Change - This is me. I like this tune. It's mixed really poorly, you can especially tell when listening to it in this mix. fuck.

CROWNS x DINOSAURUS REX - Italo Disco (Unreleased weird intro thing) - Mike would probably be confused as to why I am putting this little fragment on the mix, because it is essentially nothing. CROWNS x D REX collab has been in the works for a long time now, and this is one of the first tunes we bounced around. I always liked it, but it never went anywhere. Well, I guess it fits with the "throwback" theme.

Pomrad - Pomslap - Doesn't have anything to do with the theme, I just superfucking dig this song. 

Sloslylove - Words - slolslylove is the coolest. And his album Tendencies is the coolest. This song sounds like it could be a b-side from Toro's Causers of This. Can't wait to hear what Feng has in store for us with his next release.

Vanilla - Sure - This tune was the single from Juicy Tunes' first release "Sunrise Blend". Perhaps my favorite Vanilla song to this day, this song embodies Juicy's entire aesthetic with just one Al B Sure flip.

SAINT PEPSI - Private Caller - Saint Pep has a way with samples. Some samples just don't need that much work. The example that comes to mind is Washed Out's "Feel it All Around". He hardly touched that Gary Low sample - but did he need to? Listen to Lustt - Private Caller and tell me that Saint Pepsi is not a genius for leaving that alone. Some people have the ear. 

Abelard - Move Me - Abelard is the coolest, and I haven't heard much about him lately. This can only mean one thing: new music. This guy never fails to impress me. This song was featured on the first KEATS//COLLECTIVE compilation, Vol 1. 

Acid Jacks - Awake Since '78 (MSTRKRFT Remix) - This is where things get sticky. This is a throwback. Like, a 2008-2009 era throwback. I have a soft spot in my heart for MSTRKRFT. This was always one of my favorites.

Dyebox - Psycho Thrills (Cicada Remix) - This song is awesome, and it reminds me of The Twelves. Remember those guys? Yea, me too. Boogie.

Justice - Waters of Nazareth (Justice Remix) - The only thing better than Justice is a Justice remix of Justice. One of my favorite things about these two is that their songs always make me think my speakers are blown out. Doesn't matter how loud it is, these two are TEARING YOUR SPEAKERS APART.

Katy Perry - Waking Up In Vegas (Calvin Harris Remix) - This essentially is the climax of the dance-hall rickroll. But you must admit, this is 100% listenable Katy Perry. And I never thought I would say that. I have always really dug Calvin Harris - his album "I Created Disco" is an all-time favorite.
