Cult of Cats (2016) is the second album to arise from a dark fairytale of desire by the electronic duo Curse of Cassandra. Descending into a world of effervescent melancholy and pretty gloom, Nicole Richter and Jacob Richter collaborated with producer Chris Fahey of Big Dragon Music to deliver another moonlit cauldron of melodic floor-booming tracks.

Their debut album Night explored the eroticism of vampires with themes of otherworldly desire and sensual beauty, and Cult of Cats materializes from a similar vein with its first track ‘Carpe Noctem’, a midnight call for witches to rise up and seize the night. The whisper-sung vocals of Nicole drift above a driving bass line and powerful tom drums, and the words of Audre Lorde appear like tendrils of smoke dancing around a crackling pyre.

Breathing fire and roaring out of the gates, ‘Dragon on a Leash’ is an anthem for expressing sexual diversity, as piercing synths give way to ferocious dance beats and triumphant breakdowns of rebellious rage. Summoning soundscapes that are reminiscent of the dreamlike gothic visions of artists Victoria Frances and Tim Burton, ‘Ghost of You’ continues to explore obsessive romance with lyrics like “I need your demons to love me” and “I want your last remains.”

The fourth track ‘We Will Not Hide’ is a song for anyone who has ever felt different, or felt like they do not fit in, to make a stand and defy the oppression they may face by being who they are and choosing not to hide. Emerging from crystalline bells, shadows pulse in ‘Falling’ as Jacob croons over its rolling, churning beat. ‘Stardust’ evokes more themes of love and death, and the sultry vocals of Nicole bring the album to a close in its last track ‘Hold Me, Kill Me, Slay Me’ like a shimmering full moon on the darkest of nights.
