As has been well-documented elsewhere, I spent much of 2012-2014 doing DJ sets of other people's music (as opposed to strictly my own) for the first time since the 90s. I had so much fun hunting around on the internet, looking for the latest weird stuff to work into the set. I once heard a comedian describe their process, how they tried a new joke each night until eventually, they had a solid 75 minutes of their best material. That's how this set felt to me. 2013 was also the peak of EDM, and although I never fully embraced that movement, if you were a DJ, it was impossible not to be influenced by it on some levels. As a result, there's a few moments in the set that, years later, seem a little borderline in terms of an authentic personality fit..but I guess that's the dichotomy between immediacy and timelessness. Cut Chemist presents Lesson 6: The Lecture EP. Remastered for 2016 this release includes his Cut's mid-nineties opus in its original form from the original session multi-tracks with all elements intact. The original track itself is sometimes confused for the 1999 major label "watered down" rerelease. Also included is "Lesson 6: Instrumental (DIY Version)" minus the cuts and dialogue plus "Lesson 6: The Sketch" a raw and sometimes crude, unedited 15-minute practice tape that became the blueprint for this monumental lesson. 'Lesson 6' has become a spring board not only for the cut-n-paste style associated with Cut Chemist's approach to production but a feel for Jurassic 5's music as an eclectic and inventive whole.

Hip Hop Lives was recorded live for Adam 12s Afex night in 2008. Afex is one of LAs most prominent conceptual hip hop nights, covering the era from early eighties to mid nineties.

In the last few months, I've been excavating old cassettes from the "Mom's House" era. This installment is a simple sample tape from 1993. Sample tapes are what I used to make in order to remember which loop ideas I liked as I listened to records I either just got or had sitting around for a while. Most are just one element. There are a couple of layered arrangements as well which means I had high hopes they would turn into something. Happy to say a couple of these samples found nice homes as you may recognize.
