BUFFALO, NY- January 31, 2024 – A new #research paper was #published on the #cover of Aging (listed by MEDLINE/PubMed as "Aging (Albany NY)" and "Aging-US" by Web of Science) Volume 16, Issue 2, entitled, “Prognostic significance of senescence-related tumor microenvironment genes in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.”

The impact of the senescence related microenvironment on cancer prognosis and therapeutic response remains poorly understood. In this new study, researchers Young Chan Lee, Yonghyun Nam, Minjeong Kim, Su Il Kim, Jung-Woo Lee, Young-Gyu Eun, and Dokyoon Kim from Kyung Hee University, Kyung Hee University Hospital at Gangdong, and the University of Pennsylvania investigated the prognostic significance of senescence related tumor microenvironment genes (PSTGs) and their potential implications for immunotherapy response. 

Using the Cancer Genome Atlas- head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC) data, the researchers identified two subtypes based on the expression of PSTGs, acquired from tumor-associated senescence genes, tumor microenvironment (TME)-related genes, and immune-related genes, using consensus clustering. Using the LASSO, they constructed a risk model consisting of senescence related TME core genes (STCGs). The two subtypes exhibited significant differences in prognosis, genetic alterations, methylation patterns, and enriched pathways, and immune infiltration. 

“Our risk model stratified patients into high-risk and low-risk groups and validated in independent cohorts.”

The high-risk group showed poorer prognosis and immune inactivation, suggesting reduced responsiveness to immunotherapy. Additionally, the team observed a significant enrichment of STCGs in stromal cells using single-cell RNA transcriptome data. Their findings highlight the importance of the senescence related TME in HNSC prognosis and response to immunotherapy. 

“This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between senescence and the TME, with potential implications for precision medicine and personalized treatment approaches in HNSC.”

Five tracks of raw, live FISTULA.  After the grinding sludgecore firestorm of Northern Aggression & Vermin Prolificus, the ‘Boston’ era of Fistula came to an end.  Founding member Corey Bing and ‘Vermin’ vocalist/PATAC Records founder Dan Harrington return to the rustbelt recruiting Akron Ohio’s Buddy Peel on bass and Jeff Sullivan on drums.

Throughout the spring and summer of 2014 the lineup immediately went to work writing new material which would develop into the material presented here.  These five tracks were recorded during two practice sessions, the first four tracks recorded LIVE (no overdubs) in Jeff Sullivan’s basement during November 2014, the fifth track (originally recorded in 2012 for the split with RADIATION SICKNESS) was recorded January 2015.  Vocals were recorded in one take during February 2015.

After FISTULA’s four European shows, founding member Bahb Branca will return to the band to play second guitar.  FISTULA already has a new album ready to record toward the end of this year…

FISTULA: "Sabbath Wants to do a Split With Me"

Swedish psychedelic doom band Kingnomad is very much a product of the riffs that inspired them. 

Initially formed in 2014 by best friends Jay and Marcus while hanging out in Jay’s studio basement jamming on Black Sabbath grooves and downing bottomless beers, the pair soon stumbled onto a riff of their own making. Over the space of one evening evolved the song ‘Lucifer Is Dead’, and with that one track followed a newfound purpose.

Setting off on a quest to forge music from the influence of hard and heavy 70s rock, psychedelic flights of fancy and the hauntingly ethereal worlds of H.P. Lovecraft, the main driving force behind Kingnomad was to have as much fun as possible. Recruiting the only two people that they knew were qualified enough to orchestrate a killer rhythm section, into the fold came Andreas on drums and Maximilian on bass.

With the quartet retreating back to Jay’s basement – newly christened the “The Room of Doom” – material flowed like a never-ending stream of occult energy. Songs were written, parts recorded and almost as if by magic they found themselves propelled forward in time, primed and ready to release what they had created. Closely courted by Ripple Music they were asked last year to contribute to Chapter III in the label’s ongoing underground series The Second Coming of Heavy, with Michigan rockers Bonehawk. And with the alchemy of creativity burning fervently in their minds, a new batch of original songs were recorded for their debut album soon after.

Officially released next month via Ripple Music, Kingnomad will unleash that very album, Mapping The Inner Void, on 24 February 2017.

Wounds Deeper Than Time is their first full-length release since the ‘Surface’ album in 1997.

The album presents Morta Skuld’s finely honed mix of power and brutality with a foot firmly planted in the old school. A pummelling union of twisted melody and crushing riffs, ‘Wounds Deeper than Time’ was recorded mixed and mastered at Mercenary studios by Scott Creekmore (Putrid Pile, Broken Hope, No Zodiac, Waco Jesus, Bloodline, Lividity) & produced by the band themselves. Cover art comes courtesy of Patrick Kachellek, who created the cover for the band’s comeback EP, ‘Serving Two Masters’ in 2014. Joining longstanding member and founder David Gregor (Guitar/vocals) is Scott Willecke (Guitar), AJ Lewandowski (bass) & Eric House (drums).
