John Mark Sherlock studied composition at the University of Western Ontario with Jack Behrens, Arsenio Girón and David Myska. His works have been played by many of Canada’s finest performers and ensembles including Arraymusic, Eve Egoyan, Marc Couroux and Ensemble KORE. Also, he has written original music for dance or had works used for choreography by Marie-Josée Chartier, Heidi Strauss, and Shannon Cooney for Dancemakers, amongst many others.
With composer eldritch Priest, he formed the composer’s ensemble, neither/nor. John has, at various times, received the kind support of the Toronto Arts Council, Laidlaw Foundation, Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council and the Chalmers Foundation.

Sherlock’s work is remarkable for it’s use of electro-mechanical keyboards and organ dating from the ’60s and ’70s. He is likely unique in his extensive use of Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos, Hohner Clavinet/Pianet and Hammond organ in ensemble and via his abstract aesthetic.

840 is a London-based concert series curated by composers Alex Nikiporenko and Christian Drew. The series is dedicated to providing a platform for new experimental and minimal music. Each concert focuses on a particular chamber instrumentation, showcasing a diversity of works by living composers. 

840 takes its name from Erik Satie's inscription in Vexations - "In order to play the theme 840 times in succession, it would be advisable to prepare oneself beforehand, and in the deepest silence, by serious immobilities." 

Composer Nicholas Peters co-founded and co-curated the series from 2014 until 2017. Composer James Luff co-curated the series from 2017 until 2020.

Studiosi ed etnomusicologi come Pierluigi Navoni e Renata Meazza, Roberto Leydi, Dante Cecchi, Giuseppe Michele Gala, Roberto Lucanero hanno lavorato ed hanno apprezzato il gruppo nel corso degli anni.
Nel 2010, in occasione del quarantennale di attività del gruppo, è uscito il doppio CD “Te penzo, me tte sogno, terra mia”, che contiene nuove interpretazioni dei classici della tradizione già conosciuti e moltissimi brani inediti, frutto della pluridecennale opera di ricerca di Domenico Ciccioli e degli altri membri del gruppo.

Parler bien c'est le duo Jane Chan (violoncelle) et Nicolas Hyatt (synthétiseurs). Avec un penchant vers l'exploration de la musicalité dans la parole, nos projets tournent principalement autour d’extraits d’entrevues enregistrés de conversations, ceux-ci intégrés à côté d’un ensemble d’instruments acoustiques et électroniques.

Christina Volpini is a composer whose music has been described as “focused intently on the subtle sounds that fall between the cracks” (Ludwig Van Toronto) and “very nuanced, rustling and whispering” (Neomemoire). Informed by the ephemerality and spontaneity of natural sonic environments, her work explores gradual unfolding through time, found objects, sonic spatialization, instrumental textures and liminal spaces. Her music develops through collaborative creative processes with pieces crafted for specific spaces and performers. 

Christina has been commissioned by Esprit Orchestra, Array Ensemble, Continuum Contemporary Music, Caution Tape Music Collective, and Duo AIRS with performances in Toronto, Montréal, Ottawa, Vancouver, Edmonton, New York and throughout the U.S. east coast. She has collaborated with artists including Jumblies Theatre, Echéa Quartet, guitarist Rob MacDonald and Ensemble Bakarlari, among others. Her work has been featured by organizations including the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Soundstreams and The Music Gallery, and supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

This is an audio-only accompaniment to the exhibition at the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador running March 13-April 17. In light of the closures due to COVID-19, we have made this adapted work available online. 

Knit, Purl, Listen by Sarah Albu and Heather Barrett is a sonic exploration of textile tools, processes, reflections and memories of working: from land to sheep to fibre to yarn to garment. This interactive sonic space asks how handcraft sounds, and how craft artists experience sound internally (real or imagined/implied) while working with material. It asks how we experience the life of an object through its multiple transformations, and through memory and reflection after its present form has been created.
