I'm super happy to have Fabiola as a guest of the show today! I discovered her work by chance while rehashing on soundcloud, and I fell in love with his radio show which jumps from genre to genre to better massage the ears!

Fabiola is a Miami-based producer and DJ with ties in Detroit. Her style gravitates towards left-field, rhythmic, & bassy. She experiments with the digital age while digging into the archive of music. She have amonthly radio show on Beloved.wtf - Smooth Brain Sunday - is dedicated to explore the depths of the sonic realm.

FABiOLA is a Miami based DJ/producer with roots in Detroit. Her sound explores new and origins of dance music, with depths of acid and bass. She is known to have a versatile style and love for funky robotic rhythms. She recently joined forces with other local DJs to run Juicy Fruit - a monthly queer dance party on Miami Beach. Regardless of time or space, FABiOLA invokes a Midwest flair to every set.

Welcome back to @mooooods. For March 2018, we're ushering in the warmth with none other than CYBER GiRL (@cybergirlfab), a songstress of slick beats who takes us back to the glistening glory days of hip hop and RnB. https://moods.substack.com/p/moods-03-cyber-girl

"I never realized how much my mother’s heritage has played a role in my upbringing until recently," Fabiola says. Seville, "a city full of beautiful architecture and nature located in Andalusia, the Southern region of Spain," surrounded her with "plants flooding the windowsill and growing along the walls of our kitchen." Fabiola then danced Flamenco with her mother -- "a traditional Andalusian art form made up of dance (baile), song (cante), guitar (guitarra), and castanets (castanuelos). The music resembles the culture’s admiration of natural rhythm, for each element is equally important in order to create the overall swing of Flamenco. My favorite component of Flamenco is the cajón, which is a percussion instrument shaped as a box originally from Peru, so technically it wasn’t added on until a bit later in time. I always loved listening to Flamenco music when my mom played it, but I wouldn’t necessarily consider it a significant influence in my music taste until I started to produce it on my own. It definitely helped with my rhythm and groove, though."

Detroit's influence saw RnB and hip hip enter the stage. "I remember coming across some people discussing the release of Kanye West’s ‘Late Registration’ on MySpace, and I stayed up all night on my family’s retro big-boxed computer listening to his previous work. That’s when I started to keep up with him, gradually becoming more familiar with hip-hop influences beyond his time. I loved female artists included in my Moods mix such as Aaliyah and Missy Elliott, but I knew these artists because they were popular and were played on the radio. Around age 13-15, I started to feel a bit agitated how underrepresented women were in the music industry. That’s when I discovered some women I still look up to today: Erykah Badu, Queen Latifah, and Lauryn Hill.."

Techno then came around: "I started looking up the history of techno in Detroit and attending Detroit’s annual Electronic Music Festival at Hart Plaza (‘Movement’). I had no idea what to expect besides the very few artists I knew on the line-up the first year, but each year I grew deeper into the scene and felt it become a stronger role in my life."

It helps to explain why Fabiola takes us on such a lush journey through gold-dusted 90s and 00s records. Fantasia, Lauryn Hill, Aaliyah, Salt ‘N’ Pepa, Missy Elliott (nothing but love and respect for MY president): their tracks will have you sitting deep in a bean bag, passing a blunt, watching the rain on a Sunday morning before heading to the neighborhood diner. It's part education, it's part eulogy to American black women legends. And this is just a fraction of what she used to bump to in her youth, from high school to recent discoveries. In all, it's a seamless synthesis.

fabi0la (Fabiola Belaen) is a DJ and producer based in Ann Arbor, MI. She is currently president of U of M’s Michigan Electronic Music Collective (MEMCO), a student organization which has funneled DJs and producers into the wider world of dance music for over 13 years. Fabiola grew in the metro Detroit area listening to hip hop, soul, & RnB, greatly influenced by American black female artists such as Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, & Erykah Badu. Fabiola developed a taste for electronic music in her early teens by attending Detroit’s Movement festival. Her style shifts from warped soundscapes to acid techno, electro & DnB.

Our last mix of the year is truly a special one indeed! MEMCO alums Fabiola & Lorelei teamed up for a magical one-tow punch after DJing together for over 5 years now. 

Highlighted by a unique & cohesive selection, they managed to successfully round out this rather frantic year on a special note, captured through their mutual love for Electro, Bass & anything Detroit. 

Instead of verbally communicating, they were feeding off of each other’s energy during an intense & intimate recording session. Get ready to enter a space where the bass takes on an extra-terrestrial form of its own. 

When asked for the idea & theme behind this mix, Fabi & Laura deem the emphasis on robotic & alien-like sounds as freeing. The trippy, repetitive, & funky machine-like
soundscapes are, in contrast to us beings, not programmed to uphold any particular system. Rather, the patterns they follow serve the purpose of breaking down any barriers & inhibitions we might have. We‘ve have done our part already by dancing, feeling it to the core & simply “getting lost in the beat” - will you do the same? 

Starting out as part of the coolest collective in Michigan, they are now both based in Chicago & continue to explore & carve out their very own sound. Tapes X 009 - happy to have you <3
