A live set composed in the last days of April and reworked in September for a first attempt at making music : layers of doubt, yoyoing with percussions and melodies to put dance on a left-field footing. Loop canons and synths play with distortion mirrors while some ghosts are jumping among them.

An eclectic compilation album celebrating twenty ‘tips of the tongue’ from David Keenan, released to coincide with a book of his collected music writing.

As well as being the title of a book. Volcanic Tongue was a record shop that existed in Glasgow from 2005 to 2015, run by David Keenan and Heather Leigh, it championed contemporary DIY music from around the world, often released in tiny runs on homemade CD-Rs, and also sought to shine a light on forgotten artists from the past, who had often released their music as a ‘private press’ LP. The shop was also known for it’s weekly mailing list, with Keenan enthusiastically rapping about new arrivals, especially the record of the week, given the sobriquet ‘tip of the tongue’. This collection has been put together from releases that were a ‘tip of the tongue’, containing music that runs the gamut from outsider synth to psych-folk to damaged rock’n’roll, with tracks recorded between 1968 and 2013, a celebration of a vibrant and eclectic underground avant-garde.

One afternoon in 1968, five teenagers went into a recording studio above a drugstore in Barrington, Illinois and laid down Out Of The Bachs, one of the great ‘lost’ records made in the entire decade. Compared to their many garage band peers across the United States, The Bachs stood out by coming up with eleven jaw-dropping original compositions, accidentally captured (the studio was more used to recording local string quartets and choirs) with an otherworldly ambience which makes the tracks sound like nothing else before or since. Endlessly bootlegged, worshipped by the true heads, The Bachs are forever.

Cushioned in the heart of Leicester’s historic 1890s-built Silver Arcade, @outofjointrecords is more than just a record shop in the East Midlands.

A local haven for fresh musical ideas and styles in a town, that lacks fresh vinyl shops for new and old music. Set up in 2018 by the friends Ben, Coops, and Dan, today performing together with their only employee Hettie, the shop offers new and second-hand vinyl of the deep pulses of House and Techno as well as the reverberating echoes from Dub, Reggae, and avant-garde electronics. “We wanted to re-energize record shop culture in our city and build a hub for people to come to listen, chat, hang and exchange ideas”.

Recognise 083: HiTech

This is a mix focusing on percussive dub and roots. I put it together after a DJ gig where I had the pleasure of playing a longer than normal set which enabled me to be a bit self indulgent in the first hour and just play percussive drum based music which seemed like a nice way to set the tone for the rest of the evening. When I got back home I thought it was a good opportunity to try to capture that moment by putting  a quick mix together before the records returned to my chaotic filing system (or lack of it) probably never to be seen again for several years.

Drums (in particular Nyabinghi) play a central role in reggae and dub and I hope this mix captures some of the spiritual transcendence they deliver.

Percussive Dub & Roots

We met Maria L wondering the deep forest in República Dominicana a couple of years ago on a sweaty afternoon! She was smoking hash by the river blasting some crazy tracks we never heard on her old tape boombox. Since we saw her we immediately wanted to talk to this fellow human. Shaved head, lots of eye makeup, wild style, she looked so cool and chill. As soon as we met her she became one of our favorite monsters in our trip in the crazy island. An obsessive record digger and collector since she was really little, her jam is hits from 78´ to 84´ from her old, large and inherited dad's record collection. We asked her for a mix and here are some of her fav Dub, Dancehall, Lovers Rock, Rocksteady and Reggae songs selected from the gutters of catchy pop dollar bins! A full hour of proper FUN from the Caribbean with love! Have fun this summer and enjoy this catchy tracks!
