We are yet again approaching the end of another year filled with Awkwardly mixes and it's safe to say we're ending it on a bang. Montreal native @diletamtl is an artist we've had our eyes and ears focused on for a good while now. Always spreading positivity on Soundcloud through their curious and encouraging comments, it felt natural we connected and reached out for a contribution to our series eventually. The result of this is everything we had hoped for and more, a genre defying, all moods and flavours encompassing mix that is as eerie as it is cheerful, intense as it is gentle. Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community: Do it for the art and because you love it over anything else. Keep your ego in check. You’re not any more important than any of the dancers in the room. Don’t be afraid to turn down a gig if it doesn’t line up with your values. If you’re booked for a gig don’t assume the promoter has it all figured out - stay vigilant and keep each other safe. This goes for anyone.

Gavilán Rayna Russom (@gavilanraynarussom), boss witch at Voluminous Arts, takes the helm of Moods this November with a collection of recordings from study trips she has taken to Cuba that feature Cuban musicians. Having released music extensively under her own name, aliases like Black Meteoric Star, Hail of Arrows and Gavin Russom, and collaborations like Black Leotard Front and The Crystal Ark—as well as touring with LCD Soundsystem—Russom’s approach to music moves past genre, gender, and frameworks, and her acute ears have collected recorded live sounds and music from Cuba for her mix.

Often sliding between Portland and Seattle, Baby is a founding member of Peripheral Pups, a PNW collective that hosts renegade events celebrating queer community, wellness and mutual aid. Their sound draws on influences of psychedelia, leftfield techno, and deconstructed club, while invoking their west coast gay roots. When they’re not DJing or dancing, Baby is well-known for creating iconic rave ambience through elaborate floral sculptures and botanical installations.

BYZARRA (Minneapolis MN) is an up-and-coming Artist, Curator & DJ. Getting their bearings through organizing and working underground parties in the queer MPLS DIY scene. BYZARRA has been able to build up a very strong and versatile ear with a penchant for breaks, acid house, and electro. 

As a resident for Acme Collective, they have been able to explore new territory through art & music while honing in on a very eclectic and individual sound. BYZARRA has been able to contribute greatly to a very sacred atmosphere in the Twin Cities not only through fresh, sharply curated DJ sets but also with the strong willed intentions of holding space for often overlooked queer black and brown partygoers, especially on the dance floor.
