A know-it-all once suggested the Dadanaut ought to turn his gaze inward. He did – and what he found was at once surprising and unsettling. As Goethe noted in 1810 in the preface to ‘Theory of Colours’, every attentive look tends to become theory; here, objectivity proved impossible, because the subject was the self. The way there was blocked, and the real battle lay in discerning whether the obstacles were real or imagined. He even checked into the infirmary and sought help, yet no definitive resolution presented itself.
