Across the Sandbanks takes its inspiration from the history of the Chinese pipa. This instrument originated in the Western Regions, traversing vast deserts and absorbing cultural elements from West Asia and India before being introduced to China. Later, the pipa crossed the sea to Japan, where it developed unique national art forms in both China and Japan. 
This work not only employs the classical playing techniques commonly associated with the pipa but also integrates techniques from related instruments such as the lute, oud, and the Japanese biwa. Additionally, the collages on Renaissance lute compositions are aimed to showcase the cultural fusion in the development of Chinese music history. 
The structure of the entire piece takes influences by traditional form of pipa music. Divided into nine sections, each section features distinct yet interconnected musical motifs. These sections can be categorized into two types: one featuring instrumental interludes, and the other resembles of vocal qualities. These parts interweave, forming a complete musical narrative.
