The seeds of this mix were sown in the tender ground of February 2019 as I was re-emerging with gratitude from the depths of dengue fever in Mexico. 

Many seeds lie dormant for months or years, waiting for the right conditions and time to germinate and finally in June, mine found what they needed in Portugal at an ecstatic dance festival.  Showered with early summer love, they became fully nourished and the seedlings burst into this world in a frenzy of bright light and celebration.

But very soon after, the young seedlings discovered that this world and their journey through it also brings challenging, dark and sad times.  Their energy went back into the depths of the earth and their visible physical growth became stunted, and at times, even in a state of decline.

The ravages of life had taken their toll on a much loved elder and the young plants began their process of grieving. As time passed, they realised they were surrounded by a diverse, interconnected ecosystem of collaborative support and love from other living beings.  

Once they fully embodied this deep knowing, they reconnected their roots deeply to the life-long wisdom they’d gained from their lost elder, tapped into all the joyful memories, and manifested themselves into this genre-spanning mix of music and moods, from across this interdependent globe we call earth 🌎🌱🙏💫🌍

Heya

Susana Baca is one of the reigning queens of Afro-Peruvian music, a rich mix of infectious folkloric rhythms such as "Samba Lando" and "Alcatraz".  Much like the Cuban son, the magic of Afro-Peruvian music centers on the meeting of African drums and Spanish guitars.  I first heard Baca on David Byrne's Luaka Bop compilation singing her incredible classic "Maria Lando" and have been fascinated ever since.
