Superfreq kicks off 2014 in some style with this new five track EP from Dance Spirit, the mysterious American duo that work around a philosophy based on attaining subconscious harmony through rhythm, timbre, melody, and movement. So far they have done so on labels like Supernature and Maison d'Etre as well as Superfreq of course, and this magical EP once again proves they are in a class of their own.

The EP was made during a 6 week stay in sunny Barcelona but it comes with a sombre side note from the duo: “Being around the scene as long as we have you see people get sucked into the dark side of drugs and partying, and in LA there have even been a few suicides in our dance community, so its a message about respecting the music and the culture. If you are here to escape, you might want to tell someone and get help.”

And so to the sounds, which kick off with ‘Take In The Night’, a squelchy synthesis of bobbling house beats and sharp, crisp percussion that gets tethered to earth with a big elastic bassline. There’s plenty of decay and dirt in the way the track evolves, and more than a hint of dystopian post- apocalyptic vibes to the haunted spoken word vocals.

Following a dub version, next up is ‘There You Are’, which is another otherworldly fusion of alien sounds, scuttling bacteria and eerie synths. All this great sound design is tied to a deep mid tempo groove and Dance Spirit really create a whole world for you to get lost in.

‘I Got You’ is a supple bit of late night tech house with a dark but libidinous vocal and widescreen synths that really sounds like a pained lullaby, before final track ‘Patterns’ drops a lighter, uplifting house groove with loose limbed drums, colourful melodies and plenty of subtle disco atmosphere.

This is a great EP with which to start the year for Superfreq, and one that confirms Dance Spirit are very much on the rise.

Release Description:

"Dance Spirit?" - "I keep hearing their name everywhere". This was the general response heard when uttering their name around parties during Sonar 2014. There is a palpable excitement around them but nobody can quite put a finger on why that is. In Anticipation of their incredible Long Player, expected to drop by at the end of the summer, Chris and Reagan tease our senses with their second EP for mother label Supernature, which is guaranteed to raise their profile even more thanks in no small part to their shimmering productions and unnatural ear for melodies.The lead track, Insight is nothing short of outstanding: a mesmerising journey into shining strings and cascading percussions with the added floating vocal (performed by Reagan Himself, one half of the duo) which creates tons of atmosphere around the track. None other than Fred P was recruited to rework "Insight". Knowing his pedigree, the expectation to hear what he would do to the track was set very high and, as always, he didn't disappoint. His remix is a true work of art, sculpted and patiently built to perfection like only a true master can. He also provides us with an excellent dub mix which is more suited to those dance floors preferring a bit less melody. "Late night, early mornings" is a gorgeous piece of deep house music which truly shows Dance Spirit's dexterity within a studio environment. Bedouin are called on duty to remix it, following the incredible success of their debut EP for Supernature in the spring and they truly give the track a new identity, with middle eastern influences and a more dance floor feel. "Late nights rituals" complete a Monster Ep, further solidifying their positions as Supernature's lead artists and truly a duo to watch in the near future.

Summer Insight Podcast 2014

If it sounds like an ambitious palette of sounds to draw from, the almost freakish natural talent of its creators Christopher Mohn and Reagan Denius makes ’The Sun Also Rises’, a remarkably executed and fully cohesive musical experience.

Produced over an eight-month period between November 2012 and June 2013, the Californian-born pair normally used to producing purely with the dancefloor in mind, delighted in a boundary-less opportunity to express themselves in the studio.

Fully utilising the geared up ‘Skybox’ studio located in a neighbourhood in Venice Beach that housed everything from a control room, a live room, an extensive range of instruments too vast to list, plus an enviable collection of hardware including a UA1176 Rev D compressor once belonging to James Brown, Chris and Reagan set about having “extreme fun” creating ‘The Sun Also Rises’.

They also revelled in the collaborative process. In album tracks ‘Silent Words’ and ‘Undressed’ they invited talented Afro Cuban jazz trumpeter Gabe Steiner to come lay down some improvised horns. Nikko Gibler (Visionquest, Culprit, Bedrock), brought the full force of his musical talent on the cinematic ‘Where You Want To Be’ contributing an intoxicating brew of xylophone, harmonica, keys and dreamy vocals that swirl alongside Dance Spirit’s dusty drums making for a moreish album highlight.

Elsewhere the album points its compass more towards club territory, with Innervisions signed Jon Charnis making a studio visit to contribute to ‘Satellites’, while respected Canadian tech houser Jay Tripwire lends his vibes to the deep percussive roller ‘Lamentation’. The track features a cheeky nod to the good times that surrounded the album’s creation with a sample recording of a drunken guy belting out Whitney Houston at the top of his lungs recorded on iPhone during on an early morning walk home from a night at LA’s Exchange.

A more ‘official’ vocal contribution comes from singer Shawni who features on two album cuts, highlighted by ‘Silent Words’ with her gorgeous pipes combining with delicate horns and strings to create arguably the album’s most beautiful moment.

“Stylistically speaking the album is a conceptual listeners piece that aims to capture beauty and emotion in a contemporary and modern fashion. Heavily influenced by the rhythms of underground dance culture, and various genres of music, we wanted to take the listener on an emotional and thought provoking ride from beginning to end. It is intended for club culture, but we suggest that listening take place before or after a night out. It is the perfect compliment to tie up the loose ends of an exciting and anticipated dance night.” - Dance Spirit

The Summer Sol compilation brings together a global family of like-minded producers, all striving to move hearts, minds, and bodies with original music that draws from our ancestral past, and propels us into the future, without limitations or borders. Producers from over 14 different countries bring us 21 original songs, with lyrics from 7 different languages. 

Popular well known artists such as Canson, Dance Spirit, LUM, El Buho, Matanza, Hraach, and Alejandro Mosso, alongside fresh new artists like Rodrigo Gallardo, Spaniol, Armen Miran, Niju, V i V i D, Florista, and Peter Power, blend naturally with Sol*Selectas artists Sabo, KMLN, Goldcap, and SAAND. 

The track list is a journey itself, going from South American mid tempo, to Shamanic downtempo, to Middle Eastern deep house, to Latin tribal house, to Playa tech, to Ambient cumbia dub. 

Each song represents the multicultural influences of the artists, and shows the diversity of the Sol Selectas sound. 

The artwork by Helia Jamali visualizes the themes of summer and sunshine together perfectly. This compilation will be released on the 1st day of the Summer Solstice - June 21st. 2016.

The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting occurred on December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, when 20-year-old Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 children aged between 6 and 7 years old, as well as six adult staff members. It was during that time that we (Dance Spirit) were recording material for our first album when this tragedy took place so we wrote a song called “Mother, Mother” to help us cope with the tragic shock of this deplorable act.

The song was so powerful and emotional that we decided to shelve it; however, after the last year of senseless violence, both domestic and international relating to racism, politics, terrorism, and other evils of human nature we have decided to gift it to the world. We are starting by sharing the love at Burning Man this year. Music can be an incredibly healing factor when it comes to coping with the tragedies that we can go through in this world. We are dedicating this song to anyone who has lost a loved one to violence whether it has been in war, at home, or in the streets. 

Lyrically the song is written from the point of view from a child who lost his life to the violence, and it  is a gentle reminder to those of us who have to survive in this world; that no matter how ugly it can be, love is and always will be the answer. Metaphorically the bond between mother and child is the strongest form of love to ever exist in nature. It can also be a model for how we can grow to love each other and ourselves.

Shine

Dance Spirit is a duo dedicated to the attainment of subconscious harmony through rhythm, timbre, melody and movement. Based in Los Angeles, they’ve forged these elements into a vehicle of positive change through the medium of live electronic music.

Esoteric as it may sound, their philosophy has yielded achievements of substance. Championed by such respected labels as Get Physical Music, Crosstown Rebels and Bedrock Music, they have made a lasting mark on the global dance music landscape. Their all-original live sets have garnered them worldwide renown, but somehow the years to come look to be the brightest yet.

The seeds that would eventually grow into Dance Spirit were sown when Christopher Mohn befriended Reagan Denius owing to their shared love of progressive house. The former musician was born in Durango, Colorado and the latter in Austin, Texas - but they both grew up in Southern California and met in 2006 while working together for San Diego promoter Realivze Tribe. After shelving a previous techno project, Mohn and Denius debuted Dance Spirit live on The Rooftop of The Standard Downtown LA during a 2011 installment of Harmonic’s Bask event series.

2013 marked a major turning point for the duo. Between sharing the stage with Mr. C at underground warehouse parties and getting their Manifest EP signed to Audiofly’s Supernature imprint, they began to cultivate an international fan base. By the end of the year they had landed a residency with the Flying Circus event series at Sankeys Ibiza, and 2014 saw them tour throughout the U.S. and Mexico.

In addition to the SacBe industry parties in Tulum, a Superfreq label showcase at Fabric London, and Katerblau in Berlin, Dance Spirit has brought their improvisational brand of house music to nightclubs like The Great Northern, Public Works and Monarch in San Francisco as well as holding down a residency at Do Not Sit On The Furniture in Miami. As far as festivals are concerned, their résumé includes performances at such staples as Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Lightning In A Bottle and Piknic Electronik Barcelona as well as Burning Man sound camps like Music Savages, Pink Mammoth and Robot Heart.

Meanwhile, Dance Spirit’s tireless work ethic in the studio has earned them releases on countless world-class house and techno labels. Among the highlights of their discography is their 2014 effort Take In The Night EP on Superfreq and a collaborative EP with Audiofly titled Angel Eyes that arrived by way of Mobilee Records in 2016. The latter year they also teamed up with David Scuba on an EP titled Dust that came out on Desert Hearts Records, and released the Drowning In Irises EP on Rebellion.

2017 saw the duo debut on Bedrock Records with a three-tracker called the Thoughts Like Stars EP among other releases. In the summer of 2018 they released the two-track EP Space Portal to the Heavens on Get Physical Music after collaborating with Cari Golden on the Wash Me Clean EP via Lee Burridge and Hoj’s Tale + Tone imprint.

By incorporating analog drum machines, synthesizers live vocals into their engaging performances, Dance Spirit craft mesmerizing progressive house soundscapes with subtle hints of ambient and minimal techno. Publications like Thump, Mixmag and Attack Magazine have published features on the duo, and they’ve contributed guest mixes for such iconic series as Get Physical Radio and Transitions with John Digweed. As big as their audience has grown, their vision has remained the same: to be a beacon of light on otherwise dark dance floors.

For the foreseeable future, Dance Spirit have solidified their role as a permanent fixture in the world of underground electronic music. As always, they’re content to let the music speak for itself.
