 A truly talented artist with huge following and global appeal, Alex O’Rion continues to go from strength to strength within the world of underground dance. With his work spanning some 15 years of commercial releases, the Dutch master is a welcome returnee to Meanwhile with a stellar quartet of original tracks.

A regular across the industry’s finest purveyors of modern and cerebral progressive house music, Alex O’Rion has constantly found his music featured on such esteemed imprints as Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat, Guy J’s Lost & Found and Nick Warren’s Hope. A regular visitor to the upper echelons of the Beatport charts, over a million Spotify streams in 2020 and 4,000 followers points to broad appeal and wide-ranging support.

Now returning to Meanwhile after a trio of remixes for label head-honchos GMJ & Matter on June 2020’s “Gauntlet” and February 2021’s “The Path”, Alex O’Rion now returns to the label with a devastating 4-track original EP of unrivalled quality.

The “Echium” title track is a blistering sub-bass monster that drives along powerfully on a bed of ticking hi-hats and chest-thumping kick. Building in momentum, smooth pads and effortless synth lines flow across the 8-minute piece before revelling in a stripped-back breakdown. Picking up the pace again in the third movement, gorgeous harmonic overtones layer delicately across each other, borne of never-ending delay sweeps.

“Stranded” continues the powerful rhythmic narrative and otherworldly sonic landscape before a percussive loop provides subtle melodic phrasing. Shifting synth sequences bisect the left-right spectrum as waves of white noise fall against a rocky outcrop of percussive hats. Melodic lines continue to evolve in delicate patterns into the second half in a sonic palette of sheer bliss.

A sumptuous bassline groove propels “The Chase” through its hypnotic paces, accompanied by a chugging rhythmic backdrop. Simultaneously, gentle synth motifs pulsate in side-chained synchronicity as a rich symphony of sound swells into the second half against a plucked earworm phrase. The result is a dynamic and devastating club-friendly track that is sure to inspire a multitude of hands-in-the-air moments.

“The Serpent” ends the quadrilogy with its rippling sound effects that cascade in spiral patterns against a melodious foreground. Delicate percussive patterns marry with a deep resonant kick to provide a rhythmic anchor, giving freeform synth motifs the opportunity to express a meandering sonic voyage that reaches a powerful crescendo at the midpoint. Hitting its stride again in the third movement with additional melodic sequencing, the result is a charismatic end to an outstanding original EP.

Continuing 2022 in style, Meanwhile welcomes Analog Jungs to its roster with their emotive “Surrender”.

From the historically significant city of Córdoba, Claudio Cornejo and Gustavo Ruarte are artists at the vanguard of the underground dance scene, portrayed through their Analog Jungs production moniker. Constantly looking to develop their beautifully sculpted sound, the duo are regulars at global festivals including Burning Man, Tomorrowland and Woodstock 69, while also performing across their Argentinean homeland.

A production career has run contemporaneously with their work gracing such esteemed imprints as Mango Alley, Or Two Strangers and Nick Warren’s The Soundgarden. Supported by DJ heavyweights including John Digweed, Eelke Kleijn and fellow countryman, Hernan Cattaneo, Analog Jungs now showcase their unique talents on Meanwhile.

Opening proceedings, “Surrender” is driven by a hefty beat and offbeat percussion combination as meandering chord progressions juxtapose against a dynamic bass groove that has the words ‘floor filling’ stamped across it in large letters. Working effortlessly in syncopated joy with the rhythm section, melodic elements come courtesy of delayed chords that shimmer across the breakdown before erupting into the third movement to create a multi-faceted offering.

“Here & Now” continues the dominant kick and dynamic shaker rhythm that lays the foundation for a bassline from the depths of the Laurentian Abyss as it permeates listener consciousness with its imperceptible groove. Building with filtered subtlety, flowing pads and white noise washes, delayed chords build into the breakdown before a rousing crescendo drops back into seething and sultry dancefloor credentials.

The final track sees “Bridge” entice with it rolling percussive groove, anchored by a chest-thumping kick. White noise swells wax and wane in metronomic fashion before the track enters a new phase with ticking hit-hat groove and immaculately placed analogue synth motif. Counterpoint melodies and complementary bassline enter the fray at the breakdown before “Bridge” picks up the pace once more in the second half to dramatic and intoxicating effect.

A three-track study in musical craftsmanship, Analog Jungs have created a captivating triptych through “Surrender”.

Based in Melbourne, the Aussie duo have been beloved figures in the global progressive house scene for over a decade. Having forged a distinctive sound which focuses on inventive use of melody and rhythm, the duo has drawn the lines between global dance cultures without adhering to any fixed formula. Whether operating in solo capacity or as a duo, GMJ and Matter have taken their elusive production touch to the industry’s most esteemed imprints. From Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music and UK behemoth Anjunadeep, to Australia's long-standing Balance Music and their own burgeoning Meanwhile imprint, it’s GMJ and Matter’s storytelling style that continues to surprise and inspire even the genre’s most discerning trendsetters.  As a recent favourite of Replug boss Cid Inc, EP opener and title selection 'Metanoia' finds GMJ and Matter composing with a strong sense of space. Instantly seductive, its looping hypnotism and subtle musicality never fail to command your attention, driving each other into a whirlpool of spiralling emotions, making for a flexible club track that bends between scenes while injecting vibrant energy into the dancefloor. Rich atmospheres, effervescent percussion and dubbed out tones are at a premium across the eight-minute excursion, with each sound being an event in a slowly expanding landscape, zooming out to reveal a world of scale in which depth and contrast coax perfectly with rhythm and melody.  

 Moving forward to selection two, GMJ and Matter masterfully synthesize their talents into one singular meditative vision that is 'In Bloom'. Building with a subdued pulse, its smoky resonance eventually gives way to melodic experimentation, where textural and structural dimensions blanket subterranean wobbles and tightly knit percussion, resulting in a profound mood setting experience. Thematically distinct throughout, the duo’s misty melodies are haunting and highly memorable, ringing out in timeless suspension across a mood lifting break, before segueing into a utopian finale that resonates with a rare combination of hope and reflection.
