Stereo Underground, a leading figure in the Israeli new school techno sound runs Tel Aviv's BPM College, while releasing on Einmusika, Lost & Found, UV and Sprout.'

In this ever-more saturated, fast moving music marketplace, a track needs to be pretty damn special to not only break through, but then have a shelf life. Here at Selador, we're delighted to say that 'Playground' by Folgar, featuring an unforgettable vocal performance from Paula Os, has hit that particular jackpot.

Our multi-artist Showcase releases frequently produce memorable break out tracks, but in this case, the story cuts deeper. We always get frontline dance floor despatches from label bosses Seaman & Parry and Showcase DJ feedback quickly shows us cuts that are popping off. What made 'Playground' stand out was when the batphone at HQ started a'ringin' with some of our favourite artists requesting to remix it.

And when the message came through from the man himself in Argentina that there was a tubthumper of a breaks mix lurking in the vaults itching to be unleashed (all crunching beats, shimmering synths and ethereal vocal snatches), it was all systems go for a full fat four track package.

"Deep, sexy electronica - 80s vibes through a 2022 Argentinean lens" is how we first described the original, and we stand by those words. Remixers James Harcourt and Agustin Giri both also dug that vibe, but each adds their own unique sonic stamp. James teases and stretches out Paula's vocal, making it inescapable and anthemic in equal measure, pure peak time. Agustin goes deep, dark and tribal, building to a goose-bump inducing vocal breakdown which will set pulses racing.

An artist with a double century of production credits to his name, Gaston Ponte returns to Particles with his "Dark Side" EP. Responsible for an impressive body of work on the likes of Balkan Connection, Massive Harmony Records and Clinique Recordings, the Argentinean debuted on Particles in mid-2022 with his "Accelerated" EP. The title track is an immaculately crafted affair with dominant kick and percussive effects that jump out of the mix. A deft bassline sequence that pans the stereo spectrum and atmospheric pads create a subtle unease as "Dark Side" develops with a glorious melodic progression. Full of dancefloor energy, it evolves at the breakdown and into the second half with easy skill and poise. Full of dark intent, "Dexter" continues the melodic narrative of its partner track as immaculately cadenced motifs sit perfectly against a chunky rhythmic backdrop. Full of intelligently placed spot effects and club-friendly breakdown riser, the track erupts into the second half with huge growling bassline and beautifully sculpted arpeggio. Driving the track to its powerful conclusion, Gaston Ponte's skill and craftsmanship is in full evidence.

A name familiar to the Proton Music fanbase, Petar Dundov has carved out a reputation for distinctive and innovative production work from banks of analogue equipment operated out of his Zagreb studio. A veteran of Bedrock, DAYS like NIGHTS and microCastle, the Croatian's work for Proton Music and Particles has resulted in a raft of original tracks and remixes that include the "Salvation" and "Spark" EPs plus reworkings for Chihaka, Simos Tagias and Desaturate. The Petar Dundove remix of "Dark Side" is thus a dramatic and original interpretation with a trademark metronomic energy driven by relentless beat and woodblock infused percussive pattern. Intelligently using the main themes of the original, trademark arpeggiated patterns emerge before a uniquely cadenced new motif appears at the breakdown. Building once more into the second half, all elements combine to create a distinctive and highly impressive offering.

A relatively new artist to enter the underground dance arena, Hobin Rude has already found himself at the forefront of the progressive house scene with his work AH Digital, Future Avenue and Nick Warren's The Soundgarden, since a June 2020 debut for I AM DIFFERENT. Now making his Particles debut, the Serbian artist has created a powerful rhythmic backdrop for his remix of "Dexter" that bristles with dark energy. A pulsating bassline adds to the sonic collage as the arpeggio central to the original, filters into range amidst fizzing white-noise swells and a panoply of effects that come to the fore at the mid-point. Building to a deep crescendo, the dense rhythmic foundation then enters the fray once more as the track seamlessly glides towards its conclusion.

Showcasing talent and technique in equal measure, Gaston Ponte reveals his "Dark Side" with help from Petar Dundov and Hobin Rude.

'Rich Curtis has been at the vanguard of the underground dance scene for over 15 years as DJ, promoter and producer. Now, he makes his debut on Balance Music with the 'Baby Raver' EP featuring a pair of standout remixes coming from a fellow Australian and an Argentinean heavyweight. 

With a portfolio of production credits to rival the most seasoned performer, Rich Curtis’ work for the likes of Cid Inc.’s Replug, John 00 Fleming’s JOOF Recordings and Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music is testament to the Australian’s standing within the dance fraternity. Now hitting the heights on Balance Music, 'Baby Raver' is a chunky rhythmic powerhouse that revolves around a tight percussive groove and hefty bass groove, in two variations. A relentless, timeless intensity flows through the 'All Tears Edition' with its liberal sprinkling of stereo-panned effects, pausing for breath at an atmospheric, effects-laden breakdown. Subtle melodic flourishes flow through the 'Dry Face Edition' as gently pulsating pads and eerily evolving soundscapes provide additional layers of intrigue and dancefloor depth. The sublimely captivating 'Two Sides to Every Cockroach' is a beatless gem of emotive phrasing and counterpoint melody that flows easily across its 4-minute duration. Making its mark in the latter stages with a bassline growl, the track shows Rich Curtis as a potent sound designer with a flair for the dramatic film score. 

Jamie Stevens needs little introduction to the Balance Music faithful, along with Selador, Lost & Found and Bedrock have all played host to Jamie’s music while 2022 has already seen a pair of outstanding EPs on Balance through ‘Exatique' and ‘Becoming', with fellow countryman, GMJ. Now returning, the Jamie Stevens remix of 'Baby Raver' is a deep and driving affair that revels in a rolling percussive groove and chest-thumping kick that provides the perfect anchor for its flowing melodic lines. Taking elements from the original and evolving them into unique new passages that make their presence felt at the mid-point breakdown, Stevens’ remix reaches a rousing crescendo in the final movement as rhythm and melody combine to devastating effect. 

The Mike Griego remix is a powerhouse of deep kick and subtly pitched percussive motif. Adding the flowing pads and melodic phrasing from the original creates an almost tribal backdrop that coruscates across the stereo spectrum with ease. Generating a plethora of sonic textures and fizzing effects, delayed-infused vocal cuts and a rippling arpeggio open up at the breakdown before dropping back into the powerful rhythmic collage in a true ‘hands-in-the-air’ moment where all elements combine to devastating effect.'
