London label @scuffedrecs is kicking 2020 off with a three-tracker from  Brighton duo @heritage_ds, aka Movement and Tribalist.

The new EP,  'The Revelation', marks Heritage's Scuffed debut and arrives with the label's eye-catching (and now signature) artwork. It follows up a string of impressive releases from the likes of Croft, Farsight and Intern Hook-Up which released last year via Scuffed. 

In terms of the music, 'The Revelation' is a three-track snapshot of the woozy, mutated and tailor-made-4-the-rave trend popular among UK producers of late. Across the EP the pair utilise elements from electro, garage and breaks in a way that's sure to delight fans and newcomers to their music alike upon release.

As Hamburg based label TAU rings in the new decade, it's Echonomist who delivers the soundtrack for the label's first release of 2020. After a successful 2019 Petros, Echnomist's real name, and releases on Innervisions, Blue Shadow or Watergate continues his run and demand of contributing meaningful and valuable music to the scene and its floors. Speaking of the latter, Echonomist, who enjoys his international artist career, supports local and aspiring musicians with his Sunday event 'Dreams', which seems to be a solid base to play yourself into the spotlight of the Greek scene. However, Petros talks the 411 on his upcoming release as well as giving us some insights into his 'coming' as an artist and how'll be the next big thing from Greece.

Awake, alert, excited or maybe a little scared of what’s going to happen. You can feel the sweat on your back and goosebumps on your forearms. It’s finally happening and it’s happening under your terms. You got it. “Dominator” by Kalipo & Local Suicide is an electro anthem full of physicality and furor, of determinedness and power. Vamparela’s vocals are like the voice inside your gut that you should listen to a little more often, while the driven bassline and 80s inspired analog synths will occupy your mind and focus your thoughts. “Crocodile”, the second track of the release, is the other side of the coin – not any less definite, however more haunted and introspected in contrast. It isn’t always easy, but let’s take control and dance it out before life eats us up!

Berlin-based duo Amnesia Scanner have announced the impending release of their sophomore LP, Tearless, a sonic reflection of how it feels to experience Earth at a time when collapse is emerging as the prevailing narrative. As Amnesia Scanner founders, Ville Haimala and Martti Kalliala watch their icy home country of Finland thaw- the staggering scale of political recalibration and the worldwide climate crisis blows open old norms. “There’s a looming sense of radical change,” they noted pre-COVID, connecting the period of making the album to a fin de siecle horror and curiosity regarding what new world is being ushered in. Tearless has been referred to as “a breakup album with the planet”, to which Amnesia Scanner responds, on the LP’s closing track: “You will be fine, if we can help you lose your mind.” Amnesia Scanner are previewing the album in the form of a video for their accidental quarantine anthem “AS Going,” a clip featuring a cascade of images of spiraling humans.

Tearless marks a turning point in the duo’s trajectory, one begun in 2014 with the AS Live [][][][][] mixtape, followed by audio play Angels Rig Hook, two EP’s for Young Turks, and their 2018 debut album, Another Life (PAN). For Amnesia Scanner in 2020, the walls of the nightclubs, galleries, and institutions fall away and are replaced by full-scale theatrical productions complete with jumbotron stages, animatronics, and a surrealist costumed cast (literally so in the XL version of the album’s live show, Anesthesia Scammer). Likewise, the musical scope of the album is expansive, with guest vocalists — the Peruvian artist Lalita and the Brazillian DJ/producer LYZZA — descending into a vast uncanny valley of sound. With the crossfader on Tearless sitting closer to pop than abstraction, so too does the audience for this record widen in scope. Opener “AS Enter” sets a sombre tone until the fucking riffs of the second track (the titular, Lalita-helmed “AS Tearless”) make clear there’s plenty of roaring to come. A feature from metalcore band Code Orange on “AS Flat” follows, along with “AS Trouble” (feat. Oracle, the third, machinic ghost-member of Amnesia Scanner) and together they hit as black-metal-gaze dirges. Closing Tearless is the sadboy grunge of “AS U Will Be Fine” with a clear statement of intent: doom, despair, insanity, absurdity, it’s all natural, all cathartic, and all OK.

For the art direction of this release, Amnesia Scanner collaborators PWR scavenged the pop cultural unconscious, as if ventilating memory dissociated by trauma. The gatefold vinyl reveals a four-panel comic, full of iconic pre-millennial motifs, which arrive cut up and reassembled collage-style: fitting visuals for an album that channels Deftones as much as reggaeton, menace as much as the drop-outness of grunge. Refuse like the ‘90s and party like the ‘20s—if that seems senseless, you are doing it right. 

The album is mastered by Enyang Urbiks, featuring visual direction from PWR Studio.

A certain drive of energy shouldn’t be the doubt when hearing new music released by Sept, VNR’S A&R since day one returns to his home label. VoxNox catalog number 041 to be exact. „Ultimate Seduction“ is an EP delivering what it promises within the name with a punchy rhythm being underlined by growing synthesizer lines on the main title. The powerful bassline-roll should additionally give a big sound system the ultimate pleasure.

Same for the lines of this great VTSS Remix attached, entering deeper aspects of an energizing frequency shift, followed by hypnotizing vocal shots and on point drum programming to spice up her touch for the A-side.

Following is „The Art of Compromise“ with its flowing textures and one hell of a drop included, opening detailed voicing spheres and pushing plug patterns just right to move things to the next level. Guaranteed.

Last but not least comes „Hold The Trigger“, a tremendous banger of a tune, highlighting filtered atmospheres and setting up a forward groove to fall into a rave situations quickly. The versatile drumming is bringing the driving mode needed for a big bang to the end of any DJ-set.

The doors are well and truly blown off in ‘Funk 160’ as a planet rocking breakbeat and infectious chord stabs set the pace with confidence and class. Balmy pads caress a lazy groove in ‘Summer Moods’ and conjure feelings of long evenings and ever lasting sunsets. The Riviera is all bit crushed pads and elite level breakbeat science while you enjoy the passing vistas. ’Clouds’ brings this episode to a close with a smooth glide through the stratosphere and beyond with 4/4 kicks and luscious bass arp.

'This record for me reflects the ongoing conversation between cultures and styles where jungle meets footwork meets techno, 3 cultures that share more in common than perhaps people realise, and for me this is more of a in-depth exploration for example of sonic tropes more prevalent in the world of detroit techno than other previous records. I’m super excited to announce this release. It’s a cover of a song by a fellow Afro-Filipino, Joe Bataan. His music first caught my ear back in 2009 when Ryan Kattner of Man Man played it for me. I was immediately hooked by Joe’s music because, to me, he represented the impossible--he felt so comfortable in his skin and he had so much confidence and appeal. I had the pleasure of meeting Joe at an incredible dinner with friends at Jeepney, a Filipino restaurant in New York City. Joe was at the center of the table, talking to us like we were family. I played Joe the cover that night through the restaurant stereo and he was so happy to hear that his music stood the test of time and reached me. Now, 45 years after the original song hit the airwaves, I’m honored to bring this song to new ears. Thank you for your support.
