There is an immediately noticeable shift in mood from the last time we checked in with S. Carey. He was heavy-hearted on 2022’s Break Me Open — crestfallen and reckoning after a big love lost. And so, Watercress sets us off with the ringing of hard-won hope. It is in fact only in the clear, shallow waters that watercress grows. And these are the very places that Sean Carey the human being returns to again and again — to fish, to reflect, and to grow. Seasons have passed and he’s spent time healing in the water, flowing and still. The pieces have been collected and reassembled. Of course, there’s always going to be a wistful quality to S. Carey’s music. But here, it’s the bright, crisp October morning kind of wistful.

Kantorei Choirs of Greater Kansas City, a professional vocal ensemble whose membership consists of music educators, full and part time performers, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, dedicated to educating audiences by performing music selected from the Medieval period through the 21st century. We specialize in concerts that explore the historical links between music of all eras and art, politics, literature and culture, and most importantly,  all with an attention to detail and performance practice. Concerts feature a wide variety of excellent music ranging from Schutz to La Bamba, from medieval chant to sophisticated arrangements of traditional folk music. Kantorei combines these in ways that serve the ensemble's broader artistic vision. We also presents the Kantorei Summer Choral Institute each summer bringing young people into the fold.

Kantorei has embarked on the mission of providing choral music opportunities in a rather unique way.  Our ensemble offers singers a concentrated but high quality choral experience.  We will be performing three times each year.  A Christmas concert and a Spring concert as well as our Kantorei Summer Choral Institute will round each season.

Formed in London 2012, Bear’s Den have amassed a dedicated and international fan base with their anthemic indie-folk-rock. With 3 studio albums under their belt, as well as recent collaborative project “Fragments"with composer Paul Frith, they have been a regular fixture in the charts of UK and Europe since their inception. Their Debut album “Islands” also garnered a nomination for an Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically.  

Having toured around the world playing theatres, arenas and festivals (including Reading and Leeds, Glastonbury Festival, Pukkelpop, Lowlands and Bonnaroo), in 2019, following the release of their third album “So That You Might Hear Me" they returned to their origins for a tour of tiny "Highlands and Islands" venues across Scotland and a supporting documentary.  No stranger to music documentary making, the band also featured heavily in the award winning documentary Austin To Boston alongside Ben Howard, Nathaniel Rateliff and The Staves. 

The band’s most recent release, 2020’s “Fragments” is a collaborative work with acclaimed composer/arranger Paul Frith (Bear’s Den, The xx, Radiohead), taking highlights of the band’s back catalogue and rebuilding them from the ground up, alongside an orchestral ensemble, creating a completely new body of work from pieces of the originals.

Whitney Blair, a fiery redhead from Mississippi, and Jake Stone, a "good ole boy" from small town, Missouri, formed this rare, cohesive duo a few years ago. One grew up playing in rodeo arenas adorned with boots and spurs and the other spent his earlier days impressing even the most musically elite in bars across the country. Many took notice when the two talents combined and formed an unstoppable chemistry. They put a new light behind some of the favorites of classic rock, and a fresh twist on the hits of today. They are also turning heads with their own original material! The age old idea of "two is better than one" definitely brought these artists together, and should give you twice the incentive to give them a listen. You may become a fan today :)

Known for his work fronting the enigmatic rock band Pedro the Lion, David Bazan’s emotionally charged narratives, eye for telling detail, and mournful voice have more in common with J.D. Salinger’s “Nine Stories” or Flannery O’Connor’s “Wise Blood” than with the usual lyrical slant of popular music. Bazan is a gifted storyteller, weaving parables of spiritual conflict, suburban ennui, and personal surrender into magnetic, well-crafted songs.

His debut solo full-length album, Curse Your Branches (out now on Barsuk), is a masterwork by a modern American poet at the height of his powers. Paste Magazine called him one of the “100 Best Living Songwriters”. This record is the deepest and most explicit exploration of his struggles with faith and a meditation on all things passed between the generations.
