Once again, today's premiere comes from the increasingly fervent musical shores of Australia.  Up to bat this time is David Versace, a keyboardist, producer and composer from Meanjin, Queensland, who you may have heard with First Beige, and his samba-soaked dancefloor jazz heater, "Saguaro".

"Saguaro" is taken from his forthcoming debut LP 'Okra', for La Sape Records, about which David tell us “I’ve wanted to write this album for a long time but didn’t really know how to go about it, the writing began in early 2020 however, I was feeling like my ideas weren’t really sounding like what I had imagined in my head. I wanted the album to sound live, bright and loose so I decided that the best way to tackle it was to get in a room with a really strong rhythm section and build the tracks from the ground up.

In November 2021 I had a recording session at my friend Sampology’s studio with Jasper Gundersen on Drums and Luis Manuel on Percussion, there were some pre written chords and grooves but most of it was just feeling it out and signalling to each other when we change up the rhythms. A bit later I re- tracked the piano and laid down some bass and synth parts. My good homie Julia Beiers tracked bass for the first track "Summer Party" and then I got in an extraordinary trumpet player Curtis Scibilia to take the lead lines and do some solos.

The combination of musicians on this record was really the catalyst for its unique sound, it’s sweet and sombre yet has moments of rage and intensity. Although a lot of the record was recorded over a month, my main goal was to make the listener really feel like you are there in the room. This is where I had to really think about the production and mixing side of things. It all joins and lows together as one continuous body of work and has a quite a roomy sound to it to stick that illusion of being there.”

With a djing journey that has spanned more than 15 years, Dean Chew (aka Funk Bast*rd) has earned praises from a worldwide range of selectors that include the likes of Gilles Peterson, Lefto, Bradley Zero, San Soda, Hugo LX, Dam-Funk, Dreamcast Moe and more. Being the co-founder of Singapore-based label Darker Than Wax and the newly opened listening bar Offtrack, Dean has been tirelessly pushing and promoting an alternative expression of lefteld music through his widely eclectic and genre-bending sets. Being the main A+R and creative mind behind DTW, the label has flourished tremendously over the past 5 years, cementing its place as one of the go-to labels out of South East Asia.

His musical selections, which traverses across an extensive spectrum from deep jazz to the freshest cuts have left many indelible marks on the dancefloors. A highly respected digger who is also known by many in the circuit for his extensive musical knowledge, technically astute skills, and blends, it’s no surprise that he has warmed up or shared the stage with Bradley Zero, Lefto, HAAI, Pearson Sound, the late Mike Huckaby and many more. Most recently, Dean has debuted at Gilles Peterson’s We Out Here festival, and was also the 1st Singaporean selector to have played a set on the cult HÖR radio platform.

There’s always an element of surprise in his sets - just open them ears.

Passion by name, passion by nature. Freedom Phillips' musical journey embodies just that. Music took hold of her at a young age thanks to the family she had around her, and an obsession with collecting records followed at just 11 years old. 

She soaked up early grime then rare 90s US garage house and UK G sounds, honing her skills as a DJ and birthing the moniker Lady Passion in the process. She digs deep, it's something that's never left her - you can hear these finds on her longstanding, weekly residency on London mainstay Vision Radio every Friday.

The musical family that surrounds her also continues to inspires her. Alongside her brother DJ Perception - a pioneering force in underground UKG - several years ago they began to build musical hub in their new home for a community of DJs, producers and MCs in South London. It's this space, and the story behind it, that has been documented over the last six years as 'Moodswing', a film that will be released in the near future and takes its name from Perception's record label.

As we enter the weekend, and the sun begins to shine down over London, Lady Passion lights up our day that little bit more with a mix of warm, soulful and bouncy UKG and Garage House selections...

Because of the current global situation, it's been awhile since Space Ghost and friends have been able to host their monthly dance party Open Soul. While everyone is stuck at home, the Open Soul crew have decided to pick up where their mix series had left off 2 years ago, starting with Vol. 3 by Space Ghost.

This mix holds a few classic selections from the dance night, as well as some more recent finds. Expect an obscure mix of Boogie and Disco mostly from the 80s. These songs are for sweaty nights on a packed dance floor at Starline Social Club. We hope to be back doing what we love one day soon!

"Things are moving fast; I could cry but I gotta keep up. I know there is a lot of love out there, though it often feels out of reach.. or already snatched off the shelf. So much damn loss, it’s hard to even make sense of what is left. The music, for one.. The spirit and energy around an inclusive, warm, deep, bumpin’ MIX played live to a dancing crowd as diverse as Oakland has ever seen. 

But when you are in the MIX, it’s just you: an artist attempting to communicate a feeling. I am so forever grateful to my Open Soul collaborators for always bringing the biggest vibes and holding down our party with a hella lot of love and care and patience through a ton of highs and a few lows.
With all that in mind, I ask myself what is left? I made this mix over a period of weeks while turning inward and looking back on the evidence of which accumulated records could stand as a testament to my own big vibe, basically some deeply emotionally significant cuts. So much in the world feels discouraging and ever dwindling into some further state of fragmentation. Despite that, we still turn to the music to uplift and elevate ourselves and each other; por vida."

In 2017, Vels Trio entered the UK jazz-fusion echelons with breakout EP Yellow Ochre on TRC. Conjuring the spirit of old greats and modern innovators like Herbie Hancock and Robert Glasper, the trio captured the underground audience whilst inaugurating themselves into the headsier jazz foray. With a feature from the mighty Shabaka Hutchings bolstering the EP to a broader audience, and astonishing live performances, the record led to sold out shows across Europe in 2018.

Since then the band have been busy on-hire for other prominent artists within international soulful jazz scenes, backing for the likes of Charlotte dos Santos and Poppy Ajudha. Their individual journeys involve drummer Dougal Taylor working with Emma-Jean Thackray and Neue Grafik Ensemble on critically acclaimed EPs, bassist Cameron Dawson signing to Ubiquity with Mamas Gun, and keyboard virtuoso Jack Stephenson Oliver creating dancefloor magic with our very own SAUL and Nigerian composer Etuk Ubong.

Fast forward to 2020, with follow-up single ‘The Wad’ conquering the Spotify jazz playlists, the band have an album in the works for 2021, dropping on your doorstep via Rhythm Section INTL.

In advance of our signing of the bands new album, we're most excited to re- release the classic "Yellow Ochre".
Originally released by the now legendary Total Refreshment Centre - the press has long been out of circulation - garnering silly prices on Discogs.
Our re-issue will be an upgrade - getting pressed on 180gsm heavyweight audiophile vinyl, available in balck & ltd edition yellow ochre.
