Frankie Rose - "Street Of Dreams"

Based in Pittsburgh, Geoff @Cutups Maddock has been carving up sounds since the mid 90s. His name and styles comes out of an appreciation of the cut-ups technique of creation employed by the Dadaists, Brion Gysin and William S. Burroughs.

It's as he says "how it meshes into the wild, collage nature of sample-everything culture, both in music, the net and life in the late 20th century."

Maddock's mix for our In Session series is a darkside ride through outsider electronics and experimental sound. Electro meets glitch bass and precision drum percussion.

Amphior (@amphior) follows up his appearance on Mantis Radio 296 (2019) w/ an exclusive session mix of ambient and downtempo tracks. Entitled 'Catharsis' it marks his new album 'Another Presence' that dropped last month on Italian label Glacial Movements. Once again the Danish producer illuminates through sound. 

'Another Presence' was recorded during the long and isolated time many of us experienced during lockdowns in 2020. Mathias Hammerstrøm found himself going through as he puts it, a bit of a personal hell. His mix is compiled with this in mind, "attempting to blend together the atmosphere of his album w/ similar inward vibrations, sometimes more angsty, sometimes fading into empty space."

At the end of December 2013, Christmas looming and the New Year just around the corner, Phosphorescent played a four-night stand at the Music Hall Of Williamsburg in Brooklyn; and for four-nights running, blew the roof off the place.  Matthew Houck, fronting his seven-piece band, plus an auxiliary string trio deployed throughout the set, played for more than 10 hours, all recorded and eventually edited down to the 19 tracks that appear on the new three-album set, Phosphorescent Live At The Music Hall, out 2/17 on Dead Oceans.

Inspired by live albums such as Bob Dylan’s Hard Rain, Houck envisioned an album that, rather than play like a greatest hits collection, would present songs from throughout his catalog in new ways, representative of how the songs have grown and transformed over the years in the live setting. Phosphorescent were coming to the end of almost a year of hard touring behind 2013’s Muchacho before the four Brooklyn Music Hall shows, (one of which was a solo performance by Houck), and the ability of Houck’s songs to morph and expand is showcased here through these revelatory performances. 

Live At the Music Hall spans nearly 10 years and four Phosphorescent albums total, including 2005’s Aw Come Aw Wry, 2007’s Dead Oceans debut Pride, breakout 2010 album Here’s To Taking It Easy, and ultimately, 2013’s transformative Muchacho. The Phosphorescent live line-up here features Ricky Ray Jackson on guitar and pedal steel, pianist Scott Stapleton, drummer Christopher Marine, bassist Rustine Bragaw, percussionist David Torch and organ / keyboards player Jo Schornikow.

“Playing those four shows, it was clear something special was going on,” says Houck. “After eight months of touring, we’d gotten to a really good point where we weren’t quite exhausted yet with the material, but we’d had enough time to really grow with the songs. So we were in that sweet spot where we were pulling something great out of the songs every night.” Without a doubt, Live At The Music Hall is an inspiring document of a band at the peak of their powers.

She Keeps Bees is a duo from Brooklyn, NY, consisting of singer guitarist Jessica Larrabee and drummer/producer Andy LaPlant. They have self-recorded and released music made at home since 2006. Their debut album, Minisink Hotel, was described by NYC’s Other Music as “the best album you’ve never heard." Nests, their second full-length, was admired by the Guardian as “sparse, soulful and defiantly retro.” Their third LP, Dig On, was praised by the BBC as "an album of fire, spirit, and sweat."

Their new album "Eight Houses" finds She Keeps Bees working with an outside producer, Nicolas Vernhes (Wye Oak, Deerhunter, The War On Drugs, Dirty Projectors, Lia Ices a.o.) for the first time and enlisting guest musicians including Sharon Van Etten and Adam Schatz.

She Keeps Bees have created a beautifully timeless and haunting album. Eight Houses revels in the raw power of subtlety, silence and space, coloring Jessica Larrabee's compositions with lean piano lines, hazy horns and warm organ rolls.

She Keeps Bees - Breezy

Finally managed to find the time to put all my driftwood 12s onto one mix.  This is my 2nd attempt..my first attempt ended abruptly when i found out that there is no warning when the battery is low and the Laptop just dies.  And no, the Audacity auto recovery did not work.

Anyhoo....a selection of my favourite driftwood releases... pitched down as it was a late night vibe

No need for a tracklist,  there was only 10 releases so fairly easy to work out whats what.  Fortunately, I had most of them before they went spiralling into orbit pricewise,

Theres at least one track on every release which is simply sublime.  The more I listen, the more i love them.

Big thanks to Eric Cloutier for his original Driftwood mix which inspired me to do this one..and to Anil..who really opened my eyes to the Jeremy / Elias 12s.

Done on 2xTechnics 1210's.  No edits, no nonsense, just records.

Placid's Driftwood Mix

Joining us this month is one of the most consistent producers around at the moment. In the past six years Alex has been releasing exciting material through local Stockholm labels such as Abdulla Rashim's Northern Electronics, Bossmuik, and Aniara Records which put out his first record back in 2010. Aniara Records is also responsible for putting out the majority of his output as one half of Genius Of Time, the irresistible DJ/Live act he formed with his good friend Nils Krogh but the duo's punchy releases also found a home on Clone's Royal Oak and Gerd Janson's Running Back. The past two years have seen him focusing primarily on his solo output as Dorisburg and his most ambitious project to date arrived earlier this year on John Talobot's Hivern Discs in the form of the Irrbloss LP.

Today he's prepared a very special mix of mysterious and rare hypnotic House cuts which he recorded straight to cassette through a studio console and analogue outboard. He told us the mix is for "late night internet exploring...something to get lost within while browsing the unknown corners of the web... or possibly what a rave could sound like on an abandoned space station". Enjoy!
