Disquiet Junto Project 0111: Acts of Commons

The image which inspired this piece (more information below) made me think about sheets of paper, and the sentences that had been on them which had now been rendered devoid of any meaning whatsoever by the "redacting" process.  Lastly, the ragged right edge of the image made me think of a paper shredder.  
I built the piece from three elements:  paper noises, vocal sounds, and the sound of a shredder.  The paper sounds were recorded at close range and used with very little modification other than combining large numbers of them at one time.  The vocal sounds heard in the piece are resynthesized from linear-predictive coding (LPC) analyses of recording of me reading a list of synonyms for the word "redacted".  The shredder sound is close-mike recorded, and then processed slightly.
The voice resynthesizer let me produce streams of "conversation" which were, like the NSA document, utterly unintelligible.  The shredder acts as an interrupter and a divider.  The paper sounds take on many roles, including the ostinato near the end.
The individual sounds were edited and processed using my own software, MiXViews, and the public domain software RTcmix (http://www.rtcmix.org).  The final mix was done using Logic Pro X.

Shred Act [disquiet0083-redacted]

Coffee Dance is based on the project constraints listed below.  The oscillator I used was a low-frequency oscillator (LFO) using a custom stairstep waveform which, when used as audio at 1.6Hz, produced a pulse with an accent every 3rd beat.  The oscillator output is filtered to produce a high ringing sound for each pulse.
The drum machine is a software algorithm I wrote which randomly picks from out of 10 "kitchen sounds" (pots, lids, oven doors, slamming drawers, coffee pouring, etc.) that I recorded.  The sounds are run through a room simulator and then gated to chop them at the end of each beat.
The melody is a field recording of my coffee grinder, which I transpose up and down and applied heavy reverb.
And of course I cannot put this piece out there without a nod and a wink to Paul Lansky for his 1990 composition, "Table's Clear".  Thanks, Paul!

Coffee Dance [disquiet0085-3parts]

When I started thinking about this project, my biggest concern was how to deal with the repetition built into the constraints (I don't much care for direct repetition).  What I came up with was a "beat" track in 12/8 time, with 3 drum hits dividing each measure into three unequal parts.  Against that I put a melodic fragment in the same tempo and meter, which repeats, but the gap between the repeats varies randomly from 1 to 3 beats.  This causes the relationship between it and the drums to constantly vary.  The drone track was created using the RTcmix GRANULATE instrument processing 2 low cello pizzicato notes.

Each track was processed using a 3D sound placement + room simulator program I wrote many years ago and have used in many pieces.  The "rooms" for each track are very different:  auditorium-sized for the drone, small and narrow for the beat, and medium but reverberant for the melody.  The drum track is also binaurally filtered to give better placement for headphone listening.

Three Rooms [disquiet0088-3d]

Red Shift is a meditation on the sound beamed back to Earth by Voyager 1.  The first 4 minutes are entirely derived from the 1.5-second tone at the beginning of the recording, plus some of the noise signal (used like percussion in the piece) which follows that.  No other source material was used.  The tone was time-dialated up to 128x and transposed using the RTcmix Phase Vocoder instrument, then moved around in a very large reverberant environment using RTcmix's MMove and MPlace.  The final minute features the rising high tone from the end of the Voyager recording.  A nearly literal version of the tone is anwered by a complex expansion of the same, and then is  repeated at 3x time dilation with a second answer, closing with one last stretched repeat.

Red Shift [disquiet0089-vger]

The "feel" of this piece evolved for me over the time I was creating it.  It was not until about halfway through that I found that the layered material reminded me of a thunderstorm.  In keeping with the Disquiet Junto project, all the sounds in the piece are transformations of four recordings of myself walking:
1) On my back patio
2) Crunching through early Fall leaves
3) Pacing my interior hallway
4) Scuffing across my livingroom carpet
Unmodified and processed versions of these are combined and layered thickly with each other.  The hallway footsteps are transposed down many octaves and placed in giant reverberant rooms.  At the end, footsteps are layered at slower and slower rates until we return to the opening pace (literally).
All processing was done using RTcmix, and the tracks were mixed with Logic Pro X.

Step Storm [disquiet0091-walkingmusic]

I love the remixes. For this one I used all 20 seconds of Madamme Cell's and 1 second of Castrillo's track to create a beat. 
The other 29 seconds of Castrillo's I faded in to use as a swelling drone through out. 
With J. Surak's track I repeated the last 6 or 7 seconds to create a drone. I then opened it in a separate audacity window, added a time track and used the envelope filter to created a sliding pitch shift effect. I also in parts used the pitch change effect to get an even lower growl. 

The picture is a collage of Surak's and Madamme Cell's album covers that I then databent with audacity.

This Reminds Me Of The Dentist (disquiet0111-actsofcommons)

After downloading and cutting out the needed parts I stated working with the sources in Borderlands, iDensity and Samplr on my iPad...transferred them back into Ableton Live for adjustment of panning, reverb and volume. Finely I decided to add the rumble: reversed and down pitched Horizontales  as well as Auto Tempo 1 .... a little mastering - done...

**Production Notes**

Honestly, it took me some time to get into the source material - I just couldnt find some interesting frequencies with the right punch. After 2 hours I had some hits, kicks and noises extracted and layed down some basic drum tracks in Ableton.

Then... no idea... no melodies... nothing came to mind. Fiddled around for another hour, then I concentrated on the sample from "Horizontales" and did some pulsating melody with Ableton Push. Pads, Bass and the rest came pretty quickly.  Mixed in a hurry (it‘s very late here and I want to go to bed.)

There were no other instruments added. Hope you like it!

Industry (disquiet0111-actsofcommons)

The rhythmic structure comes from Maddam Cell's "Auto Tempo 1" with a 4 bar sampling and loop.  Some EQ added.

The main melodic lines come from two passes of J. Surak's "Improvisation for Prepared Autoharp", both played in reverse with one at half speed and the other at quarter speed creating different pitches of the same sound sample.  Those weave and intertwine throughout. Some reverb added.

The background swells come from Juan Manuel Castrillo's "Horizontales" and serve as a thickening agent, adding more texture.

All samples were directly recorded to the Samplr app for Ipad and manipulated within.  No other sound sources were used in this track and the only changes come from added effects (EQ, some reverb, and in the "Auto Tempo 1" sample - some fuzz distortion.

Manipulator, You - [disquiet0111 - actsofcommons]

Not a lot to say -- this short piece is built around a falling tone derived from the "Horizontales" fragment described below.  It is introduced and accompanied by filtered, time-stretched, chopped, and transposed variations on the other two fragments.  Primary work was done using RTcmix, with additional e.q., reverb, and mixing in Logic Studio.
