Disquiet Junto Project 0111: Acts of Commons

I love the remixes. For this one I used all 20 seconds of Madamme Cell's and 1 second of Castrillo's track to create a beat. 
The other 29 seconds of Castrillo's I faded in to use as a swelling drone through out. 
With J. Surak's track I repeated the last 6 or 7 seconds to create a drone. I then opened it in a separate audacity window, added a time track and used the envelope filter to created a sliding pitch shift effect. I also in parts used the pitch change effect to get an even lower growl. 

The picture is a collage of Surak's and Madamme Cell's album covers that I then databent with audacity.

This Reminds Me Of The Dentist (disquiet0111-actsofcommons)

After downloading and cutting out the needed parts I stated working with the sources in Borderlands, iDensity and Samplr on my iPad...transferred them back into Ableton Live for adjustment of panning, reverb and volume. Finely I decided to add the rumble: reversed and down pitched Horizontales  as well as Auto Tempo 1 .... a little mastering - done...

**Production Notes**

Honestly, it took me some time to get into the source material - I just couldnt find some interesting frequencies with the right punch. After 2 hours I had some hits, kicks and noises extracted and layed down some basic drum tracks in Ableton.

Then... no idea... no melodies... nothing came to mind. Fiddled around for another hour, then I concentrated on the sample from "Horizontales" and did some pulsating melody with Ableton Push. Pads, Bass and the rest came pretty quickly.  Mixed in a hurry (it‘s very late here and I want to go to bed.)

There were no other instruments added. Hope you like it!

Industry (disquiet0111-actsofcommons)

The rhythmic structure comes from Maddam Cell's "Auto Tempo 1" with a 4 bar sampling and loop.  Some EQ added.

The main melodic lines come from two passes of J. Surak's "Improvisation for Prepared Autoharp", both played in reverse with one at half speed and the other at quarter speed creating different pitches of the same sound sample.  Those weave and intertwine throughout. Some reverb added.

The background swells come from Juan Manuel Castrillo's "Horizontales" and serve as a thickening agent, adding more texture.

All samples were directly recorded to the Samplr app for Ipad and manipulated within.  No other sound sources were used in this track and the only changes come from added effects (EQ, some reverb, and in the "Auto Tempo 1" sample - some fuzz distortion.

Not a lot to say -- this short piece is built around a falling tone derived from the "Horizontales" fragment described below.  It is introduced and accompanied by filtered, time-stretched, chopped, and transposed variations on the other two fragments. How and what I did:

This is all done in Ableton with some M4L use (mostly LFO) and heavy (ab)use of the warp engine.

The main rythm part is from "Auto Tempo 1". Chopped, filtered, rearranged and fed trough some resonators. Secondary rhythm elements originate from the same track, and come from playing the track back at 1/4 or 1/8 speed (can't remember) filtering out the low end and sending to another resonator.

Both the main harmonics and the bass-thing is made by pitching and stretching "Horizontales". Amazing textures on this track!
Layered the track multiple times at different pitches till I reached some kind of harmony.

“Improvisation for Prepared Autoharp” is used multiple times through out the track to create depth and "melody".

Pataphysics [disquiet0111-actsofcommons]

The first time I've done a Junto project since 0055, this was a fairly quick effort to try out new plugins and software. I'd recently picked up the new version 10 of Acid Music Studio, which was where I first started making sample-based music in earnest, and I'd also bought a few new plugins from the excellent Inear Display, whose work tends toward the experimental/glitch end of things.

I cropped the audio files in question to the requisite length (30 seconds of one, 10 of another, 20 of the third) and arranged them in Acid, in admittedly a rather haphazard manner but one which was intended not to give any one of the clips dominance over the others. I used six audio tracks in total, repeating each clip twice. Each had a single VST effect applied to it, all from Inear Display with the exception of one, which had Togu Audio Line's excellent (and free) DUB-III plugin applied.

The master bus had compressor, tape sim, and a couple of reverbs (including Nomad Factory's excellent COSMOS) applied, along with a couple of utilities to push the mix a little further. Overall the sound is a fairly thickly textured ambient industrial/noise piece, which seems like quite a pleasing result given the source audio.

Also, I'm deaf in one ear at the moment, so if this is really terribly balanced, that's why.

I rushed this a bit, ended up with three messy drones that cancelled each other out, so I went back to square one. 

Horizontales got the granular treatment, it does all the dynamics and swooping, as well as the “Hammond organ” sounds which open and close the thing; 

From Auto Tempo 1 I used only a very small snippet, cloned over and over and put through a lot of plugins to provide the clicking “drum” as well as the insect sounds;

The Autoharp track was added to itself in reverse and stretched into a ‘palindrone’. This was double tracked, out of phase and also pitch altered.

There’s another weird drone in there too, it jumps in at 30 seconds - I think it’s the Autoharp track down-tempoed (this breaks the sound up instead of stretching it) then put through lots of different delay settings. It creates a drone with voices…

I’m happy with it, but it’s not what I was really after. I really need to learn how to use Ableton.

Ambien [disquiet0111-actsofcommons]

I did a lot of preparatory work in audacity. Reversing the phases of the autotempo track, inverting one and adding them together. Then using noise reduction to dirty it up or feeding it through lipredemuco. Also used paulstretch to get some tonal stuff from some of the other samples.

Loaded the prepared samples into a few instances of Alchemy, made a drum kit from the “Improvisation for Prepared Autoharp,” and then used some resonant filters on all the various samples.

As usual, real life intervened a few times when I thought things were going well, and I'm not really happy with the rushed ending, but I'm tired of filing things late or not at all.

Last Call at the Body Genre Dance Party [disquiet0111-actsofcommons]

Downloaded the source tracks and edited out the specified segments using Audacity. Named these segments A, B and C, respectively.  Loaded these into Ableton Live.
Extracted and processed part of B to get the main rhythm.  Loaded A and C into Max for Live devices to create two distinct sample processing instruments for the other two tracks (which were recorded ‘live’ as played).

I decided to respect the source material as much as possible, so that it would still be recognizable in my composition. I originally fed one of the samples through a rhythmic filtered gate preset, but I felt this dominated the result far too much, erasing the original character of the sample, so I took it out.

"Horizontales" loops forward and backward, lowpass-filtered to create a windlike drone. "AutoTempo 1" also loops, including the awkward sudden lack of beats. One version runs at normal speed, distorted to bring out the background buzzing; the other is slowed down, filtered and reverbed to emphasize the pops. The last sample is played at various pitches. In a second line, it is treated with a granular transformation to create overtones.

Looking back, I probably should have been more willing to mutilate the source material in order to derive elements more suited to my inspiration. The samples are rather too bruitist for my tastes and the result of my reinterpretation certainly lacks structure.

Scams On Mt. Coof [disquiet0111-actsofcommons]

I first coordinated this with a drum set solo, and matched sounds up with the wave forms of the sounds I played, alternating between pieces. Once this was set, I came back and worked with it as though it were its own solo (which wasn't difficult to separate the two, given it didn't sound too similar to the drum set solo!) and worked with EQing, dynamics, etc...and had fun.

A Conversation of this sort - disquiet0111-actsofcommons

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
