"The career of Bass music stalwarts Matta has been eventful to say the least, being held at gunpoint in Ukraine and run over in Brighton would make anyone think twice about leaving the house. Having spent the last three years holed up in the kind of self imposed isolation that would make anyone lose the plot, they now re-emerge into the light of day with a bunch of tracks that make Dr Frankensteins efforts look positively conventional. Grafting genre upon genre the duo have plunged down a rabbit hole of dark experimentation, the mix of Andy’s love of music scores and James’ appetite for rolling sub makes for a bleak yet beautiful atmosphere with crafted sound design for each element nothing is standard. The result is a mismatched abomination of stylistic tropes, they’ve lost their genre and quite possibly their minds. Just don’t tell the men in white coats."
