After a hiatus which has left many fans sitting on the edge of their subs, Calyx & Teebee are making a dramatic return. And with this record in tow, the scene is about to bow down yet again to two of their most skilled sonic crafters. 

With the huge success of their All or Nothing LP laying just over the horizon, Calyx & Teebee are about to take the title place yet again and with the full throttle forces of pounding basslines and meticulously constructed mechanics. But what else could you expect from two revered veterans of the genre, whose joint muscle has telescoped the competition in comparison. 

However, it’s not just their duteous workmanship and full-throttle drive that makes their music so undeniably huge. In tracks like ‘A Day That Never Comes’ Larry Con’s vocals lead you by the hand into all-out anarchy. Revving between each break, your picked up and dropped by verbal crescendos. Angry, yet innovative and impressively intricate, Calyx & Teebee have raised expectations even higher.

Being a production line of carefully crafted composition with a meticulous production standard, Calyx & Teebee have delivered yet again. And after dominating the Beatport Top 100 with their most recent single ‘A Day That Never Comes / Snakes & Ladders’, they won’t be applying the brakes anytime soon, especially in the lead up to their greatly anticipated second album on the Ram imprint.

Back on vocal duties, Calyx demonstrates the pair’s multi-dimensional approach to beat making. With plucky percussion relaying you through bouncing subs and a drivingly solid bassline, it defines their vast repertoire of style. They’re not scared to dip into unfamiliar territories, with Calyx’s cool vocals sitting on top of lulling guitar rhythms to provide the first part of a diverse and brilliantly crafted record. 

‘Sawn Off’ rolls out next; it’s a grittier track than its predecessor, with a conundrum of hi-hats and aggressive drum patterns. Pounding pads take you towards a colossal break, heighten by the effect of a cleverly placed sample. The track ricochets throughout, not losing momentum or impact, with an intricately weaved structure, one only achievable by a team who’ve been running the game for decades.  

With an album laying just out of reach, each single is bringing us closer and closer to the inevitable. All four tracks prove they’re still a formidable force to be reckoned with; this LP will only emphasise that fact.

Deep beneath the surface of the cosmic ocean, in the sea of quintessence lies the Bassquarium, an endless reef of glowing speaker-corals and crystalline sound systems. It is said to hum with the first Amen break ever dropped — vibrations that ripple out into every rave, every festival, every pirate signal beamed into the night.

From these depths swim the Wobblefish, radiant alien creatures whose fins shimmer like waveforms and whose tendrils pulse with sub-bass frequencies. Each Wobblefish is born of a different frequency band — the golden ones carry the warm mids, the violet ones ripple with high-end shimmer, and the titanic blue elders channel the pure rolling sub-bass that can be felt in your chest.

Junglists whisper that when a Wobblefish passes by, your heartbeat syncs to its rhythm. Entire shoals of them have been known to trigger mass skanking on distant shores, as if the ocean itself were rewinding the dancefloor.

But beware: the Bassquarium is not a zoo, it’s a temple. The Wobblefish are sacred guardians of rhythm, and only those who enter with open ears and wobbling knees are granted the vision of their dance. To say that Document One “defy categorisation” wouldn't quite get across the whole truth. For one thing, it's a cliché, and to use a cliché to describe their brand of gritty, smoky, jazz-inspired, funk-infused dancefloor D&B just wouldn't be right. After all, they steer well away from cliché in their music, what with their expert melding of the light and the dark, the natural and the synthetic, the laid-back and the crowd-hyping. They've created their own category, and the two tracks on this release are here to stretch the limits of it a couple of notches further. “Chasing Stars” is the sound of effortlessness. 

Two different flavours of drum, the techy kick and snare plus the loose cymbals and fills, roll alongside each other in the intro. Meanwhile noodling keys and the eponymous vocal riff create a gentle head-nodding vibe. Then, without breaking a sweat, Document One call this casual jam-session to order, with a grimy bassline that weaves the whole track into a tightly-knit roller. This is dangerous rave material that you don't see coming. 

Then “Get Da Funk” goes one step more groovy. Yeah, groovy. That's the word for it. Horns and acoustic drums lay down the vibe, then a Motown-style vocal soars over the top to build things up. Then the drop gives us quintessential Document One, as bass and iron fist drums create a rhythmic combination with vocal and horn stabs that is absolutely irresistible. An ice-cool breakdown with added blues guitar gives the opportunity for even more hype in the second drop. 

These tracks could easily be onstage recordings from some ultra-slick band. The deftly expert programming doesn't detract from the feeling of live energy that Document One manage to get in their music. Like the best jazz or funk acts, it's the sound of accomplished technicians letting loose and having some fun. And while they're having fun, the ravers are too. This is D&B as only Document One do it.
