Silas & Snare Surgeon - FABRICLIVE x Hit&Run Mix

It’s nearly Christmas and that can only mean one thing. Gifts. So in the nature of the festive season may we present to you this exclusive mix from are Canadian duo Deadly Vanity. Consisting of Joel waznicky James MacGregor, together, they make ethereal, esoteric house music, the type of which is just as suited to the club as it is the home. Indeed, theirs is an eclectic sound palette, so much so that they actually started off making music in a rock band before making the somewhat unusual progression towards 4/4 strands. That said, it's a decision that's paid dividends thus far, especially where their debut EP on Bohemian Yacht Club, 'World Stop Turning' is concerned.

With all this in mind, we called on them for a mix, and what they turn in is a splendorous listen that calls on classic and contemporary house music alike. Sit back, relax and enjoy our mix of the day. One thing is for sure – you'll be hearing plenty more from these boys in 2014.

It’s nearly the end of the month and we’re looking to get in the mood for the weekend early. Yes, after finally recovering from our New Years Eve exploits, surviving ‘Blue Monday’ and cancelling this year’s anaemic attempt at a health kick we’re ready to go out and have some fun and who better to put us in the mood with an exclusive mix than Memory9?

A quick look at the back story into Memory9's pathway into music reveals an interesting tale, starting off with a scholarship at the Berklee College of Music in Boston at the tender age of 17, where he collaborated with diverse acts ranging from jazz groups and Cuban musicians to hip hop MCs.

This experience with musical diversity is evident in Memory9's current new release, 'Red Falcon', and the EP's four tracks move between genres as varied as jungle, jazz, hip hop and footwork. Gadi himself is a trained jazz guitarist, and these elements of more traditional musical compositions are beautifully interwoven with sophisticated bassline beats and electronic samples. This organic combination of musical ideas has allowed Memory9 to develop his signature sound to compellingly explore a range of motifs. Inspired by the effect his colour blindness has on his perception of the colour red, the artist traverses images of dreams, desert planets, blood, lust and dust.

Sonny Wharton has emerged in the past couple of years as one of the brightest prospects in the UK. Described by The Shapeshifters as “one of the most prolific producers out there” he’s remixed the likes of Fatboy Slim, Frankie Knuckles and The Temper Trap. Releasing singles on Size, Toolroom, Spinnin’ and Skint Sonny has received regular support from house music heavyweights Pete Tong, Steve Angello, Roger Sanchez and Mark Knight whilst continuing to push his own label Whartone Records and dominate the download charts.﻿

As a DJ Sonny shot to fame by winning a DJ Mag mix-tape competition for Renaissance leading to sets in Ibiza at Amnesia, a weekly residency at the infamous Manumission and quickly went on to establish a formidable reputation as a DJ whilst racking up slots for the who’s who of club land with sell-out shows at Space, Pacha and Ministry Of Sound to name but a few.

Known for his technical abilities both in the studio and in the DJ booth Sonny has been able to call us at DT fans of his for a while now. Thus after enjoying a stellar 2013 that saw him continue his indomitable rise through electronic music and with an even bigger plans for the coming year for both him and his label it was only natural that invited Sonny to revisit 5 pivotal moments in his fledgling career. The fact that he also delivered us an exclusive mix to go with it was just a bonus!


Mix of the Day : Sonny Wharton

Twenty years ago, electronic dance music in America was a much different beast than the Las Vegas-friendly industry it is today, divided into underground factions such as house and techno-rave [as they called it]. It was mainly the house and techno coming out of New York, Chicago and Detroit which enthralled and obsessed UK clubbers and record spotters, then in the throes of that amazing period which saw clubs up and down the country regularly packed and cavorting. Every week seemed to bring gargantuan new tunes which pushed out the boundaries and detonated crowds, throwing up new musical mutants as different styles collided and the clubbing communities, anywhere from Glasgow’s Slam and Leeds’ Back To Basics to Full Circle near Slough and Open All Hours at the Ministry, revelled in the ongoing fun and uproar. 

One of our favourite labels to appear in the early 90’s  San Francisco label Hardkiss, which were totally unlike the banging techno and trouser-napalming proto-trance mayhem sprouting at the time. Hardkiss was run by three brothers called Scott, Gavin and Robbie, who weren’t brothers by blood but shared a  spiritual and musical bond releasing a mixture of acid house music, trance music, and breakbeat techno together on their eponymous label.

Sadly the trio was reduced to a duo following the tragic passing away of Scott last March with Gavin and Robbie continuing on without their sorely missed brother. Now to kick off their 2014 we’re pleased to share with you an exclusive mix from Gavin and Robbie in celebration of the release of their new EP RetroactiveFuturisticPsychedelicFunkBump on Whiskey Pickle as the second single from their forthcoming album 1991 which is due to land later this year. Billed as a “ slick slab of electro-boogie rhythms,” the single features vocoded vox and a driving bass line that'll take listeners on an interstellar voyage from Cybotron to Planet Rock.

Blunt Instruments Presents his Dungeon Beats for Dungeon Meat Mix

In recent years there have been few places the DT team would rather be than in Amsterdam’s Trouw.  Initially intended as a temporary nightspot, the former newspaper factory quickly found a special place in our hearts as it offered one of the finest clubbing experiences in the world launching some of the Netherland’s most promising rising stars and it was with great sadness that we received the news that the club would be entering its final 12 months as of this January. 

One such talent to come out of the Amsterdam institution is resident and Life and Death label manager, Job Jobse who has quickly forged a reputation as one of the one to watch, winning plaudits from some of the scenes biggest names with Tale Of Us and the Innervisions camp already amongst his growing army of fans. Regularly showcasing his diverse musical knowledge, we can certainly see why he’s resident at one of the world's most respected clubs, as well as managing label of the moment, Life and Death, at such an early age.

In eight years Croatia has grown to become the go to country for festivals-with around 14 events happening peak season. This could be down to a number of facts distributed via tweed coated lecturer: flight prices, the currency, the climate, but a large part of it could be down to the DNA coding: the beach, boat party and holiday vibe that permeates all Croatian festivals which has made the Dalmatian Coast such an attractive destination for music lovers and sun worshippers alike.

Thus like anywhere worth going you can be sure DT will have a presence there which is why this summer we’ve hooked up with Croatia Wave to bring to you the first in a series of fresh and exclusive mixes from different Croatia Wave Villas Located around the Adriatic.
Who are Croatia Wave we hear you cry? 

Croatia Wave apart from being friends of DT are a specialist festival accommodation company that provide both luxury Croatian Villas and  apartments with a bespoke touch. Founded in 2011 by two young Ibiza veterans and Croatian festival enthusiasts who saw a gap in the market for offering anything from standard Croatian festival holidays to boat trips, exclusive yoga retreats ,private Island parties and everything inbetween. So now we know a little more about Croatia Wave what about our inaugural Live From The Villa DJs?
Thrill and Pleasure is made up of London based DJ/ producers, Mike Gill and Bobby Pleasure. Both long-term DJs in their own rights; their love for a similar style of house music was first formed in Ibiza 2007, where together they regularly attended such parties as Circo Loco at DC10 and the zoo project. Since then Bobby (Pleasure) has held down residencies at some of London’s best underground parties while also being a renowned promoter; hosting ‘Shanta Love Club’ a bespoke, invite only gathering held in top secret locations in and around London. Mike on the other hand is better known for his releases on Hot Creations and Wolf and Lamb. His most recent EP on Jamie Trench’s Roots for Bloom records received high acclaim from top international DJs across the board with Apollonia charting it and opening their BPM festival set with the B-side track ‘The Message’. Together ‘Thrill and Pleasure’ specialise in an eclectic, but always grooving style of House and Disco with their playfulness shining through with every selection. Although still in their infancy as a duo, the future is certainly looking bright for this young pair and so we thought they’d be perfect to open up our sunshine laden new live mix series.

We love a good birthday party here at Data Transmission and what a special one we have on the horizon for next weekend.  Our good friends over at EGG London are turning 11 and to celebrate reaching the milestone they’ve assembled one of the tastiest looking line ups we’ve ever seen at the club with Diynamic Records boss Solomun and techno heavyweight Cristian Varela both drafted in to get proceedings jumping next Saturday.

Since opening the doors in 2003, Egg has played an integral part in re-establishing Kings Cross as a stomping ground for London’s discerning clubbing community with their gnarly Flipside sound system, forward-looking lineups and industrial design aesthetics proving popular.
So with this weekends event in mind we hooked up with EGG and incoming headliner Cristian Varela to deliver an extra special 4 deck mixed podcast mix to get you in the mood for this weeks birthday celebrations early.

In a career that's been littered with accolades aplenty, the past few years have still proved pretty substantial for Spanish techno producer Cristian Varela. The recipient of the Best techno DJ award at last year's Ibiza DJ awards, his is a career that's hit new heights in recent times, a fact in no small part attributable to his winding, mind-bending sets and his many slick productions. This week we welcome Bruno Cardoso aka Xinobi, a Portuguese grown-up-kid obsessed with music. He’s part of a generation that grew up within the music-blog eruption fueled by Do It Yourself ethics.

Xinobi’s influences are as diverse as his record collection consequently his productions are eclectic and self-freshened as it’s not easy not to get surprised every time he releases something. Although you can simply label it as Disco / House / Electro / Techno, the truth is that there is a unique watermark on his sound.  Together with his friend and work-partner Moullinex he gave birth to the still-growing-influent Discotexas, a Record Label that, with the help from the newcomers Mr. Mitsuhirato and Lazydisco, is getting more and more followers and admirers and is stepping further to a respectable dimension of scene-credibility.

We've been big fans of Xinobi for some time and we are very excited he's done this superb mix for us at Data Transmisison, so sit back and enjoy...

Dj Tennis is Manfredi Romano, born in 1970 and raised between New Jersey, Sicily and Parma in a family where music was such a small thing. No relatives playing any musical instruments, nothing to play at home, no one giving music any special amount of love. But despite this, his creative and artistic attitude have always centered around music - singing, playing and collecting weird and noisy musical instruments at every turn. In 1989 while studying computer science at the Pisa university (just to please his grandfather) he was already playing and singing in school bands and had an indie rock radio show on a local radio station in Palermo. 

Recording bands, organizing parties and DJ'ing at the tennis club where he used to play as a semi-pro player (the Tennis moniker comes from his passion for that sport) all became his way to support the costs of his studies. But when he graduated he never imagined he would turn that hobby into his career. Still he became a DJ anyway, while focusing first on promoting new underground music in his country and founding and developing some of the most important Italian underground musical events such as the Elita festival in Milan and the Dissonanze festival in Rome.

During the last 2 decades he started producing music for theatre, movie soundtracks and TV commercials. His production skills always take inspiration from the psychedelic dark and melancholic sounds of the 60s straight thru to early 2000’s IDM. To name a few influences: Beach Boys, The Who, Talk Talk, Ultravox, XTC, Fugazi, June of 44, Suicide, Radiohead, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada and Plastikman.

In 2010, tired of the output of the actual musical scene he decided to collect all of his musical works and, with Thugfucker’s Greg Oreck, to start a new techno and pop label called Life and Death. The name of the label has a specific meaning, inspired by the socratic maieutic process to turn subtle and “dead” elements into a new life and referring to the benefit and hypnotic power of music used in the mesmeric processes for brain therapy.

Tennis is actually based in Berlin where he also shares the label experience and a studio with Tale of Us. And he has worked hard to create a crew of young and inspired musicians like Clockwork, Esperanza among others.

Manfredi's main job is still being a Promoter and a Booking agent, he runs a Booking Agency called Daze. http://www.daze.it

We asked Stereo:Type about the process of making this mix, and here is what he had to say:

"When you're commissioned to make a mix for DJ Shadow, you know you have to pull something special out of the bag. Making sure it was a musical experience was as much a key part of this as making it a hype mix to listen to, considering you are working with material by a guy whose process involves finding sounds which work together as though they were made for one another. When i was approached to do this, I was asked to make the mix using material either sampled by, or remixed for or by Shadow. So Instead of making it a straight up one track into another kind of mix, I tried to approach it like a live performance, deconstructing tracks into their component parts then re-assembling and combining them with my own take on it. I certainly hope people have as much of a blast listening to it as i did making it."
