In the bustling world of instrumental grime, Mr. Mitch’s ‘Peace Dub’ phenomenon - initially a concept aimed squarely at flipping grime’s ‘war dub’ complex on it’s head - has fast become a reputable sub-genre all of it’s own. With a series of his own peace edits garnering plenty of recognition online over the course of 2014, Mitch has enlisted a trio of new-school producers to assist him in re-contextualising four unconventional classics and with it, christen a new series of peace-themed white label 12”s. 

Simply titled PEACE001, Mitch is joined by Gobstopper signees Strict Face and Loom, as well as elusive beat-making trio Silk Road Assassins on the label’s first ever physical record - a body of work that takes instrumental grime even further into unchartered territory. Kicking off with the brooding heartache of Mitch’s fuzzy, emotionally charged re-rub of Dru Hill’s ‘How Deep Is Your Love’, there’s also space for Strict Face to turn an icier, washed-out hand to the peace aesthetic on ‘Alice’ - his beautifully mellow, minimalist rework of Alice Deejay classic ‘Better Off Alone’. 

Latest signee Loom opts to take a deconstructionist route through Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill’ as glitchy melodies, ushered reverb and pitched-up vocal loops meet harsh, industrial sampling in unerringly dystopian collision of ideas, whilst Silk Road Assassins sign off with their take on T-Pain’s ‘Im Sprung’. Trickling, iced-out melodies and pitched-down vocals are laid over dark, menacing bass rumbles in a tribute to the sound that has already earmarked the trio as refreshingly slick sound designers.

WGVinyl022 Butch - Songs About Unconsciousness will be released on Vinyl and Beatport on March 2nd.

Fresh and exclusive from Butch's Watergate mix is a massive cut with his partner in crime, Hohberg titled The Spirit. Add a remix from the Swiss duo Adriatique and a tune from Butch flying solo and you have "Songs About Unconsciousness".

With "The Spirit", Butch and Hohberg create a vivid and euphoric tour of emotions with a hypnotic looping lead, lush pads and a pulsating, relentless groove. It's a serious burner that makes you want to close your eyes and get lost in another world. 

In a perfect contrast yet staying true to the original, Adriatique deliver a stunning remix. Their take is a deeper, more melodic vibe, ripe with warm sub bass and rich organic drums perfect for a late night or early morning excursions.

To round up the EP is Shahrzād. It's an acid trip laced with spaced out washes of Arabian winds, voices from a dream and infectious loops of percussion. In all "Songs About Unconsciousness" is a beautifully crafted bundle from the master of dance floor psychedelia, Butch.

The EP finds Hackman going full-circle of sorts. The tunes from this release were written almost five years ago, when the producer was on a totally different aesthetic tip, favoring UK funky styles over the deeper house tones that popped up on THUMP recently. "I would say this EP would have fit better within my catalogue back around 2011," Hackman tells THUMP. "That's when the tracks were originally written and signed to Halocyan, but I'm at the point now where I'm starting to write a bit harder, more dance floor driven music, so this EP is a good base to build from for this."

It's no secret we're big fans of Exit Records here at Data Transmission. Set up by dBridge in 2003, the imprint has - as its motto suggests - stayed true to the craft, releasing some of the most forward-thinking drum & bass of the past decade. That's why when we heard label regular Skeptical would be returning with a 4-tracker this month, we simply had to get in on the action.

In true Skeptical fashion, our Debut Transmission 'Between The Lines' balances the genre's natural exuberance with a penchant for the murkier side of life. Tribalistic drum-work echoes his recent Imperial EP for Exit, with the addition of strings, snarling bass stabs and Collette Warren's husky vocals adding a more 'concrete jungle' vibe, whilst still keeping the track firmly within the heart of darkness. Warren has become something of a staple voice with drum & bass in recent years - working with the likes of Marky, Klute and FD - and it's clear to see why, as she turns out yet another stirring performance.

Skeptical - Between The Lines feat. Collette Warren

Since its debut release in September 2014, Liar's Tessier-Ashpool Recordings has stuck to a strict doctrine of 'machine music', offering sonic science-fiction from an far-reaching array of underground artists. Yet another new recruit, Savvas Kattamis - aka Transporon - closes out 2015 for the label with a 4-track EP of mind-bending techno and intergalactic electronica.

Our personal favourite, 'Inhalor' is perhaps the most danceable track on the record, but that's not to say it doesn't compete with the others on an experimental level. Kattamis presents submerged bass and crushed beats, shattered under their own immense weight. Countering this darkness, a cloud of tinkling atmospherics and sweeping vocals creates an absorbing artificial reality.

Last year, a new star rose from the depths of the cosmos (otherwise known as East London) and seared his place in the UK's dance consciousness. The man we speak of is Elijah Simmons, and since he's been popping up on line-ups alongside Tale of Us, Mano le Tough, DJ Tennis, Chaim and The Drifter, we thought it about time to put his skills to the test as well.

Having put his name on the map when Blond:ish picked up the mesmeric 'Otavio’s Dream' for their Flying Circus compilation, Elijah has kept the intensity up with a string of releases in 2015. Having served up two EPs for Kompakt-affiliated label, KX, the HYDE party starter's burgeoning back catalogue looks set to swell further in the new year as he lines up a slew of new releases for a number of techno's hottest labels.

With credentials like these you'd probably guess that Elijah's set will blend the very best techno has to offer, and you'd be right. Designed to be enjoyed with "hot chocolate, cookies and a comfortable pair of slacks", you can stream or download the mix now. Enjoy!
